Expert tip: This is one of the most popular yoga retreats offered in Guatemala.
In Guatemala, making colorful kites and flying them is a form of honoring and communicating with ancestors and loved ones who have passed on. During this time of the year, in which many cultures believe that the veil between the worlds is thinner, you can take part in this tradition while also connecting to yourself through yoga and meditation. Embrace local tradition as you build your own kite and let it fly in one of the traditional Día de Muertos giant kite festivals in Guatemala.
The accommodation is at Celestial Dance's main venue, Jardín Campo Alegre. In Campo Alegre, they have 5 beautiful little cabins with individual ensuite bathrooms giving you the space you need.
The holiday starts in the arrival afternoon (arrival between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.), and early arrivals may leave their luggage and make their way to the neighborhood Café. There will be a welcome and orientation before your first yoga session at 5 p.m.
There will be on each full day two to three asana (posture) based classes a day consisting of aerial yoga and Hatha yoga. On November 1st the program will vary as you leave after breakfast to the giant kite festival and finish the day with a lovely dinner and campfire back at Celestial Dance Home.
This retreat happens at a special time of year. In many pagan and Christian beliefs the veil between the worlds is thinnest on Samhain night/All Hallows day, an opportune moment to communicate through meditation with those that have come before us.
With gratitude and an open heart they commemorate their departed and immerse themselves in the local tradition of building a kite in their honour and letting it fly in the hope of touching their souls one more time at one of Guatemala's amazing giant kite festivals that are held in celebration of this day.
In addition to the kite festival you will also make your own little kites and have a little ceremony for the dead on Samhain eve.
The retreat finishes after the return from the kite festival on November 1st.
On November 1st, you will only have your morning session yoga as you leave after breakfast to go to the kite festival to let your kite fly and enjoy the spectacle of the giant kites.
The evening of your last day you will enjoy a small campfire, weather permitting.

You'll get to enjoy nature at its finest, staying on a mountain slope, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. Observe birds and butterflies as you chill in the gardens. Picturesque Antigua is only a 15-minute drive away. Whenever you feel the need to get lost in the culture and Spanish Baroque-influenced architectural history, you'll have the perfect opportunity to do that.
Simple and delicious vegetarian meals are supplied three times a day which are part of your retreat package. If advised in advance they can accommodate nut allergies, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets.
Some of the meals are taken at the local Café. On the day trip, they will provide a packed lunch.
