From the iconic Acropolis of Athens to the mysterious Delphi, towering Meteora Monasteries, and stunning Samaria Gorge, Greece is undeniably filled with plenty of iconic landmarks.
The cradle of Western civilization, Athens is home to the famous Acropolis in Athens. Towering above the Greek capital, the archeological site includes some of the most important ancient Greek buildings: the Parthenon, the Old Temple of Athena, Erechtheum, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, and more. In its shadow, the Roman and Greek Agoras, offer even more insights into the life of the ancient Greeks.
If you’re looking to combine history with majestic mountain views, the Delphi Archaeological Site is also popular. Once the site of the popular Oracle of Delhi, who was consulted about important decisions throughout the entire classical world, now it’s where you can immerse yourself in the history and learn more about Ancient Greece.
Want to delve into Greek mythology? Just outside modern-day Heraklion, the Palace of Knossos in Crete is where you should go! Among the ancient architecture you’ll find the famous labyrinth, which legend says was used to house the Minotaur, a half-man half-bull creature.
If you want a more spiritual experience, a visit to Meteora Monasteries may be perfect for you. These incredible Greek Orthodox monasteries are perched on top of massive rock pillars in central Greece. If you’re looking for some challenge, you can climb the hundreds of steps to reach the monasteries. On top, you’ll be mesmerized by the panoramic views you’re about to see. Almost all of the monasteries in the complex can be visited.
If you’re looking for a hiking option, the Samaria Gorge in Crete is also one of Europe’s best places to do so. Hike the gorge that’s surrounded by towering cliffs, lush greenery, and refreshing natural springs. You might also spot the rare Kri-Kri, a wild goat native to Crete.
And in Santorini, the best views of the coastline are found when you hike to the top of its caldera (volcano crater). There you’ll get the most stunning views of the surrounding islands and the Aegean Sea.
