Yin yoga is a part of the original Hatha yoga tradition. In its modern incarnation, Yin yoga combines the influences of Indian yoga with the Chinese Daoist practice and western science to improve your health on many levels with its emphasis on long-held, passive stresses of the deeper connective tissues, Yin yoga mobilizes and strengthen your joints, ligaments, and deep fascial networks. Yin yoga is a practice much needed in today's difficult, divisive times.
Yin yoga blends two ancient principles - traditional Chinese medicine and yogic philosophy. Both these ancient principles focus on balancing the universal life force energy. The yogis call this 'prana' and the Chinese call it 'qi'. Yin yoga has its roots in Taoist traditions, which sees that there are two opposing yet complementary energies at work within the universe, Yin (passive), and Yang (active).
They represent duality and opposites coming together as one. Yin symbolizes our shadow nature, which is quiet and still while Yang represents the active forces that drive change. Yang stands for the sun, the lightning path for transformation. This style of yoga consists of floor-based postures that are held for a longer duration. The practice cools down the body and is restorative in nature.
It focuses on the connective tissues - ligaments, joints, bones, and the deep fascia networks of the body - rather than the muscles. Regular practice of Yin yoga unleashes blocked energy and releases deeply held tension in the body. It is, therefore, known as 'The Quiet Practice'.
Practitioners gets introduced to the science, core principles, and benefits of Yin yoga.
Practitioners get an understanding of Chinese Taoist practices and philosophy.
Yin yoga is a quiet, contemplative practice that focuses on balancing the prana. Practitioners learn floor-based Yin postures and engage in long-held, deeply restful postures.
In contrast to Yin. Yang is a more active practice that works on the muscles, blood flow, building strength, stamina, and flexibility. Practitioners learn Yang styles of yoga, which involves rhythm and repetition quite like Vinyasa flow.
Meridians are energy channels that transport energy and life through your body. They affect how you think, feel, and your overall health. When the meridian pathways are open and clear, pranas freely flow through your body to maintain harmony and balance. Practitioners are taught asanas that target these body meridians.
Practitioners learn the technique of using seals or gestures to facilitate the flow of energy in the body.
Practitioners learn the technique of consciously blocking and unblocking energy flow to different parts of their body.
Yogic sleep can be more effective than conventional sleep. Practitioners are guided through a yoga Nidra meditation experience and learn how to induce it themselves.
Pranayama is the control of prana through the breath. Practitioners are introduced to different breathing techniques to increase awareness of the breath.
