Program

What is Ashtanga yoga?

Ashtanga yoga is the ancient yoga form that means 'eight-limbs' of yoga. The eight limbs are yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi as per Sage Patanjali under the book Yoga Sutra. Later, Ashtanga yoga was popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois during the 20th century. Pattabhi Jois was also one of the first students of Krishnamacharya.

Where he took the third practice of Ashtanga yoga which is asana, he created a specific series of postures, and the rest of others needed to be combined with it. This yoga form is a dynamic, flowing style that connects the movement of the body with the breath. Under the ashtanga yoga of Pattabhi Jois, there are majorly three series:

  • The primary series: yoga Chikitsa, yoga for health, or yoga therapy
  • The intermediate series: Nadi Shodhana, the nerve purifier (also called the second series)
  • The advanced series: Sthira Bhaga, centering on strength

This 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh with Rishikesh Yoga Association will be more focused on the primary series. It is a beginner program so it is important for a beginner first to be focused on the primary series in order to understand it.
