Food
In yoga, what you eat is deeply connected not only to your physical health, but also to your emotions, thoughts, and spiritual well-being. Unlike modern nutritional science, which categorizes food by proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, yoga views food through the lens of its energetic and psychological impact.
According to yogic philosophy, food is classified into three categories based on the qualities it instills in the body and mind:
- Sattvic Food - Pure, light, and nourishing. Sattvic foods promote clarity, calmness, and vitality. They help cultivate a balanced mind and energetic body, making them ideal for spiritual practices.
- Rajasic Food - Stimulating and spicy. Rajasic foods fuel action, ambition, and restlessness. While they can enhance drive and passion, they may also lead to agitation or imbalance if consumed in excess.
- Tamasic Food - Heavy and dulling. Tamasic foods cause lethargy, confusion, and inertia. They diminish mental clarity and are considered obstructive to both physical health and spiritual growth.
By choosing foods that support a Sattvic lifestyle, yoga practitioners aim to align their diet with their inner journey, enhancing harmony, awareness, and peace.
