Gingerhill Farm Retreat is a sustainable, organic farm and community located in the lush tropics of Kealakekua, Hawaii. Founded by Mayumi Oda, known as the "Matisse of Japan" for her inspirational Goddess artwork, Gingerhill boasts a bountiful array of healing foods and medicinal herbs. Banana and papaya trees abound, interlaced with wild edibles and colorful flowers. The orchards also boast hearty avocado trees, juicy lychee, and medicinal noni, while the gardens are rich with organic greens, root vegetables, beans, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, herbs, and exotic plants. Inspired by the principles of agroforestry and syntropic farming, Gingerhill Farm seeks to establish a genuine food forest to sustain its community of dedicated volunteers and retreat participants.
The retreat accommodations are situated among the flourishing flora and fauna and boast enviable views of their rich vegetation and the vivid Hawaiian sunset. Retreat spaces are adorned with Mayumi's original artwork and are open to the natural environment. They enjoy communal meals on their ocean-view lanai, taking in the scents, smells, and imagery of the Hawaiian country. Nearby attractions and excursions include the famous Captain Cook monument hike, Manini Beach, Keahou Bay, and an array of scenic hikes. The farm is also just mere minutes from local restaurants, shops, and spas, and just 25 minutes south of the fine dining, surfing, and underwater excursions in Kona town.
Enjoy the restorative reclusion that Gingerhill affords without sacrificing proximity to local shops and activities!
Gingerhill Farm retreat is one of the many Big Island farms located on Hawaii’s sunny west side. It resides in the lush farm country that lies between the vivacity of Kona town and the calm beauty of Captain Cook’s beaches and trails
This region is called Kona’s “Greenbelt.” Its rich volcanic soils produce an abundance of macadamia nuts, avocados, and mangoes. It also produces some of the finest and most expensive coffee in the world.
Amidst the ocean views and serenity on the farm, it is easy to forget that the property is just minutes from Kealakekua and Kainaliu towns, with their quaint boutiques, antique stores, and eateries.
As a result, Gingerhill is distinct from other Big Island farms. It offers a genuine retreat from modern living, while also providing access to the island’s various recreational opportunities.
The farm is just thirty minutes south of Kona International Airport and twenty minutes from Kona town. Thus, guests will easily be able to enjoy Kona’s local music, tropical drinks, and freshly caught fish. Kona also offers scuba diving and snorkeling tours, eclectic boutique shopping, and a vibrant bar and restaurant scene.
Alternatively, guests looking to escape from the bustle of Kona living can venture a few minutes south to Captain Cook. There, they can find scenic hiking trails, historical artifacts, and intimate, local food joints.
Finally, there is no shortage of beach-going opportunities both north and south, whether you are looking to see Hawaii’s unique black sand beaches, snorkel in a Hawaiian marine conservation district, or relax in sparsely populated spaces near scenic waters.
Gingerhill is located just off the Big Island’s main highway, making recreation, touristic sites, and microclimates all within reach. Drive a couple hours southeast and visit Volcanoes National Park. Venture to the island’s east side and view lush jungle and breathtaking views of lava flowing into the ocean.
Head northwest past fancy resorts through desert-like fields of lava rock and you will have turquoise waters to your left and 14,000-foot volcanoes to your right. Travel northeast and hike the peaks and valleys of Hawaii’s greatest canyons.
Whether you seek adventure, novelty, restoration, or education, your goal is more accessible at Gingerhill than at other Big Island farms. Their knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff look forward to helping you enhance your retreat.
During this retreat, you will be served three amazing farm-to-table meals daily. Gingerhill Farm Retreat takes care to source healthy ingredients of the highest quality to prepare delicious and nutritionally dense meals.
Your meals are predominantly plant-based and include fresh greens, herbs, root vegetables, and tree fruit from the farm. A typical meal will likely consist of a fresh green salad, fermented vegetables, cooked grains, and cooked vegetables.
They are not a vegan farm, and many of the meals include organic butter and cheese, farm-fresh eggs, and the occasional well-sourced meat, but they are happy to alter the menu to accommodate vegetarians and vegans.
All of their fares are organic, gluten-free, and Ayurvedic. They will do their best to accommodate your dietary restrictions.
Please note that, while they can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets, they do consume animal products on this farm. Please discuss your dietary restrictions with them ahead of time so they can prepare to accommodate you.
Gingerhill Farm Retreat has onsite and offsite therapists for a variety of modalities available at extra cost. Please send an inquiry if you are interested.
