Certifications

You will receive a certification after completion under Anandan Dhandapani from Samudra Yoga Space, a school registered in India.

About the training

This immersive program offers a balance between disciplined self-practice and mindful rest, guiding you through the foundations of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga with clarity, strength, and devotion. Free time invites space to rest, reflect, or explore the serenity of the yogi’s garden. Following the traditional Mysore-style method, each practitioner moves at their own rhythm, receiving personalized guidance and hands-on adjustments. The collective energy of the group creates a field of inspiration and commitment, helping you grow steadily through the series, both on and off the mat. Explore the Ashtanga practice with Anandan D., an experienced practitioner with a rich background. Anand began his teaching ashtanga journey in Tamil Nadu, South India.

Becoming a level-two practitioner under the supervision of Vijay Kumar in Mysore, he continued his studies through multiple trips to Mysore, India. Anand regularly returns to Mysore for ongoing study with his teacher. He is the Ashtanga resident yoga teacher at The Yoga Barn. All yoga levels are welcome, however, this training is not suitable for complete beginners. If you have limited experience with asanas and are looking for a program that provides a comprehensive immersion, this training may not be the right fit for you. If you have dedicated yourself to consistent practice on the mat for an extended period, ideally a year or more, and you are now eager to take your yoga practice to the next level, this course is tailor-made for you.

Syllabus

1. Traditional practice

To practice a particular pose in its deep, one needs to know the intelligent way of using the muscles, the appropriate way of breathing, the meditative state of the mind, and the spiritually rooted soul. The practise of postures is a moving meditation. You will also discuss the usage of props, the balance between strength and flexibility, and so on.

2. Traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa

Practice and explore the traditional Ashtanga primary series. With its Vinyasa Krama, Tristhana, the traditional Ashtanga Practice is a transformational process within.

3. Sanskrit names and Tristhana practice

The Sanskrit names of the postures are explained elaborately, and how to teach an Ashtanga yoga-led class effectively is evaluated in detail. The benefits of the specific sequencing and the principles of Vinyasa (the movements between postures), Ujjayi Pranayama (the sound-induced breath), Drishti (the gaze), and Bandhas (the three locks or seals) are included as essential elements of the practice and teaching of Ashtanga Yoga during the course.

4. Yoga anatomy

You will have an introduction to yoga anatomy, in which you will discuss the anatomical aspects of yoga practice. It is important to know how to engage or relax the muscles, deepening the stretches yet not injuring ourselves physically, and so on. It is also important to understand the structure of your respiration to improve the quality of breathing by pranayama techniques.

5. Asanas and alignment

The most significant and hardest aspect of the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition is its Vinyasa Krama. There is a specific count for every asana. During the training, you work on exploring Vinyasa counts of every asana of the primary series. The practice of asanas makes proper progress when practised safely and with an understanding of its subtle aspects. During alignment and adjustment, you explore these subtle techniques, how to practice ashtanga without any injuries at different levels, and how to deepen the practice.

6. Ayurveda for yoga teachers

Ayurveda for yoga teachers! Why? Whether you like it or not, as you become yoga teachers and take this journey forward, you are always asked what to eat, when to drink water, and what food can go with the other type of food. The internet is flooded with so many different concepts that you get more confused than you do clarity. You in the training will look into the food and daily life from an Ayurveda perspective. It is also important to understand the body types, such as 'Vata, Pitta, and Kapha types' so that you can understand yourself well which is deeply connected to the way you practice asanas.

7. Yoga philosophy

Philosophical sessions cover a variety of fundamentals such as Yoga Sutras, Nadis, Chakras, origin and evolution of yoga philosophy, etc.

8. Pranayama and meditation

Do not only practice pranayama but teach too. As an Ashtanga teacher, you should be able to teach pranayama too.

9. Kriya practices

During this Ashtanga yoga teacher training, you practice Jala Neti, Kapala Bhati, and Trataka. Kriyas help you in cleansing the system.

10. Theme-based practices

Some theme-based practices such as Yin yoga, backbends, etc. will help you in preparing for your Ashtanga practice.

Special workshops

1. The breath: Unlock the keys to healing, growth, and injury prevention

Have you experienced an injury while inhaling or exhaling? Ashtanga promotes smooth, consistent nasal breathing even in initially uncomfortable positions. Join Anand as you explore the breath, alternating between theoretical discussions, seated breathing exercises, and practical applications of breathing techniques to commonly challenging postures found in the primary series.

2. Bandhas in backbends: Unlocking mobility with strength

What if the contrast is not solely between flexibility and strength? How can you train your nervous system to unlock your inherent flexibility? Delve into backbending, with a practice emphasis on the early backbends of the intermediate level. Throughout this session, you will delve into the importance of strength in movements traditionally associated with flexibility.

3. Inversions, arm balances, and handstands

In this full two-hour immersion workshop, you will learn:

  • Practical tools to turn upside down with stability and grace
  • Anatomical patterns at play in your body while inverted
  • Shoulder mechanics to stabilize your inversions
  • Knowledge you can use whether you are balancing on your head, hands, or elbows
  • And much more

4. The art of adjustment

This module will break down the elements of different postures in the primary series, including standing postures, forward bending, and back bending. Anand will explain the dynamics of being sensitive and responsible when appraoching adjusting different students.

5. Refining adjustments in key postures

This session will focus on refining adjustments in challenging postures within the Primary Series, including Marichyasana, Supta Kurmasana, and Setu Bandhasana. Emphasis will be placed on creating adjustments that support deeper alignment while avoiding strain, allowing each student to experience the posture safely and effectively.
