A place that feels like home (but better)

At Matsya Hostel, the accommodation is built around a simple intention: comfort, community, and calm energy. It’s more than a place to sleep — it’s a space where guests arrive, slow down, and immediately feel at ease. The atmosphere encourages grounding, rest, and a softer pace of life.

  • Comfort-driven, calm and welcoming atmosphere
  • Strong sense of community and connection
  • Designed for slowing down and feeling at home

Everything is thought to support a relaxed lifestyle where people can settle in naturally, whether they stay a few nights or longer.

Different ways to stay (for every kind of traveler)

The accommodation offers flexible options depending on how guests want to experience their stay, from social shared spaces to more private comfort.

  • Shared dorms (4 beds) for social, relaxed stays
  • Private double rooms for quiet comfort and privacy
  • Private house option for groups, retreats, or longer stays

This variety allows each guest to choose their own rhythm—whether that means connection, independence, or a balance of both.

Simple, clean, and thoughtfully designed

Rooms are designed with simplicity and intention, focusing on comfort and essentials rather than excess.

  • Comfortable beds with included linens
  • Natural light and minimal, calming design
  • Private or shared bathroom options
  • Practical details like reading lights, lockers, and privacy curtains

The result is a space that feels peaceful and uncluttered, supporting rest and recovery.

Beautiful shared spaces (where the magic happens)

The shared areas are at the heart of the experience, creating natural opportunities for connection while still allowing personal space.

  • Fully equipped shared kitchen for flexible living
  • Lounge and terrace for relaxing and socialising
  • Garden and outdoor chill areas
  • Bar with drinks and light snacks
  • Coworking space for remote work

These spaces are designed to bring people together effortlessly, without forcing interaction.

A calm, respectful atmosphere

The overall vibe is intentionally quiet and grounded, prioritising well-being and presence over nightlife energy.

  • Not a party-focused hostel
  • Respectful quiet hours in the evening
  • Emphasis on connection and mindfulness

A natural daily rhythm emerges: slow mornings, active days, shared meals, and peaceful evenings.

Everything is designed to make daily life simple, functional, and stress-free.

What makes it special

What truly defines the accommodation is not just the spaces themselves, but the feeling they create over time.

  • Encourages connection between guests
  • Supports rest, privacy, and recovery
  • Balances social energy with quiet space
  • Creates a grounded, intentional living experience

Many guests come for a short stay and naturally extend their time, drawn by the ease, warmth, and rhythm of the place.

Program

Your 3-night Matsya experience

From the moment you arrive, everything slows down. The program is built like a soft rhythm between ocean, breath, movement, and rest—a few days where you naturally disconnect from noise and reconnect with yourself and others.

Day 1 – Arrival & gentle settling in

You arrive and ease into the space without rush. After check-in, you take time to land, explore, and meet the atmosphere of the hostel. The day naturally unfolds into your first shared moments — a calm evening, light conversations, and your first taste of the Matsya rhythm. It’s all about arriving slowly, not performing anything.

Day 2 – Movement, breath & sunset gathering

The morning starts with a nourishing breakfast made with local products, setting a simple and grounding tone for the day. A yoga class brings you into your body—stretching, grounding, and releasing. Later, a meditative forest walk invites stillness and presence among the trees. The day gently flows toward the evening, where everyone comes together for a sunset apéro—music, golden light, easy conversations, and that shared feeling of “we’re exactly where we need to be.”

Day 3 – Breath, brunch & deep connection

The day begins with breakfast and a pranayama class focused on breath awareness and inner clarity. Then comes one of the highlights of the stay: a shared brunch—abundant, colorful, local, and enjoyed slowly together. It’s a moment where time stretches, conversations deepen, and everything feels easy. The afternoon flows freely, followed by a second yoga class to balance energy and relaxation. The evening is dedicated to a cozy movie night—blankets, soft lights, and a collective exhale.

Day 4 – Slow goodbye

The final morning begins quietly with breakfast and open time in the shared spaces. There’s no rush to leave — just space to enjoy a last coffee, pack slowly, and absorb the atmosphere one more time. People leave feeling lighter, more rested, and connected—carrying a bit of the Matsya rhythm with them.

Included excursions

The included excursions are designed to reconnect you with nature, slow down the mind, and deepen your experience of the Basque coastline and forest landscapes. They are not “activities to check off,” but shared moments where the group naturally comes together and experiences the surroundings in a more mindful way.

Guided forest walk – mindful immersion in nature

A gentle walk through nearby forest paths where the pace is intentionally slow. The focus is on presence: feeling the ground, listening to the wind through the trees, and stepping away from daily noise. It’s a grounding experience that helps reset both body and mind.

Second meditative forest walk – deeper connection

A second walk in a different moment of the stay, allowing for a deeper sense of connection with nature and the group. This one often feels more introspective — less about movement, more about observation, silence, and awareness of the natural rhythm around you.

Sunset apéro gathering – ocean light experience

A shared sunset moment where everyone gathers outdoors to watch the sky shift into golden and pink tones over the Basque horizon. It’s a simple but powerful experience: drinks, light music, easy conversations, and that feeling of slowing down together as the day fades.

Free-flow coastal and nature access

While not a structured excursion, guests are encouraged to explore the surrounding area at their own pace — ocean walks, nearby beaches, river paths, and cycling routes. The environment itself becomes part of the experience, inviting spontaneous discovery and quiet moments in nature.

Retreat location

Matsya is set in the Blancpignon area of Anglet, a calm in-between location that brings together the best of the Basque Coast. It sits between wild Atlantic nature, local neighborhood life, and easy access to nearby towns like Biarritz—offering a more authentic, lived-in atmosphere away from busy tourist centers.

  • Raw Atlantic coastline just minutes away
  • Laid-back local Anglet neighbourhood feel
  • Quick access to Biarritz energy and culture

This is a place where life naturally slows down, making it an ideal setting for a restorative stay shaped by nature, movement, and simplicity.

Minutes from the ocean (without the chaos)

One of the biggest advantages of the location is how close it is to the beach while still feeling peaceful and uncrowded. Within just a few minutes, you reach some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Basque Country.

  • Wild surf beaches like Les Cavaliers
  • Long sandy beaches perfect for sunset walks
  • Natural dunes and preserved coastal landscapes

It’s a rare balance: immediate access to the ocean without the intensity of crowded seaside hubs.

Nature all around (river, forest & calm energy)

Beyond the ocean, the surroundings offer a rich natural environment made for slow exploration and quiet moments outdoors.

  • Adour river paths for walking and cycling
  • Green areas and lakes around Chiberta
  • Extensive bike routes connecting coast and forest

Guests can easily move from a morning practice to time in nature and then to the sea or river—all within a single day, without needing transport.

Perfect base to explore the Basque coast!

The location also works as a strategic starting point to discover the wider Basque region, with several iconic destinations within easy reach.

  • Biarritz just 10 minutes away
  • Bayonne for culture, food, and history
  • Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Spanish border within easy access

This central positioning makes it easy to explore both the French and Spanish sides of the Basque coast in short, flexible day trips.

What’s around the hostel

The immediate neighborhood has everything needed for a comfortable and easy stay, blending local life with practical conveniences.

  • Bakeries and cafés for daily fresh food
  • Small supermarkets and local shops
  • Bike and surf rental options nearby
  • Relaxed local bars with sunset atmosphere

The hostel itself extends this atmosphere with shared spaces, a bar, coworking areas, and regular community moments that bring guests together naturally.

Why this location feels special

More than a location, it’s an atmosphere—a balance between connection and calm, nature and culture, movement and rest.

  • Close to the ocean without being crowded
  • Surrounded by nature, greenery, and open space
  • Calm, grounding environment ideal for slow living
  • Easy access to culture, surf, and nightlife if desired

It’s a place where travelers don’t just pass through the Basque Country—they experience it in a deeper, more present way.
