Program
Typical day
The day usually starts at 08:30 with a half-hour yoga / Thai Chi or Qigong session. The course starts at 09:00 and goes on until 14:00, with a break of half an hour in between. The afternoons are free for you to lie on the beach, swim, rest, or explore this beautiful area. This is half a holiday and half study and learn.
Thai Massage
Thai massage, or "Nuad Boran," has been practiced in Thailand for centuries. It actually has its roots in India over 2500 years ago and is based on Ayurvedic medicine and yoga. This massage style has been handed down through an unbroken chain for centuries from Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, or Shivago, who was a close friend of the Buddha and a great physician. He is also famous for the techniques of herbal cures and steam baths. He is honored by many Thais as the father of medicine in the same way that Hippocrates is considered the father of Western medicine.
It is presumed that Thai massage reached what is now Thailand in the 3rd or 2nd century BC along with Buddhism. There seems to be some connection between acupuncture and acupressure, as well as other aspects of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Thai medicine.
The main principle behind the techniques of Thai massage is the principle of "Metta," usually translated as loving kindness. Rooted in Buddhist teachings and precepts were methods of building humility, compassion, and concentration in the healer that were designed to bring him/her to a deeper level of awareness: if the mind is wandering or if compassionate intent is absent, then the massage will be nothing more than a series of physical movements. The benefits are multiplied tenfold when the touch is infused with the will to heal.
Traditional Thai massage is typically done on a mat on the floor instead of a massage table, and the client remains completely clothed throughout the session. No oils are used. It incorporates a combination of acupressure, energy meridian work, and yoga-like stretching. The typical routine can be varied to suit a wide range of physical needs. A typical session lasts 1 to 2 hours.
Included excursions
On the last day of the course, Gladwell Massage will organise an evening meal at one of the best tavernas in the area.
Instructors
Daniel Gladwell
Daniel is proficient in different modalities and has studied extensively in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Besides being a qualified Thai Yoga massage therapist, he has also studied abdominal massage (Chi Nei Tsang), body assessment and realignment. Daniel takes a holistic approach to health for his clients; taking into account factors such as diet, posture, breathing and simple exercise regimes. Using only natural and organic oils, Daniel sees massage as a means of prevention and knows that these treatments are of great benefit in relieving stress and tightness in the body.
