Routes

These routes are handpicked examples of some favourites. The itinerary distances will be followed.

Day one: Incheril loop via Slioch (Munro)

Park at Incheril, close to Kinlochewe. This is an accessible starting point if staying in Wester Ross or near the Torridon Hills. The route is geologically interesting, following one of the region’s finest lochs and tackling one of its most iconic Munros. It is also close to the Fisherfield Forest, one of Scotland’s true wilderness areas.

The path begins flat and well trodden, becoming wilder and more isolated, and therefore rockier, as it approaches Gleann Tanagaidh. It skirts east and south before returning along the western path and following a relatively flat but still technical return along Loch Maree. The route starts and ends flat but remains challenging throughout.

  • Distance: 35 to 40 km / 21.7 to 24.9 mi
  • Difficulty rating: 4/5

Day two: Beinn Damph loop

This is a relatively flat (by West Highlands standards) circular run starting at the Torridon Hotel and skirting the base of Beinn Damph, with an optional ascent to the summit. It circles Loch Damph anticlockwise and returns to the Torridon Hotel, which offers excellent food and hospitality.

  • Distance: About 22 km / 13.7 mi
  • Difficulty rating: 2/5

Day three: The Celtman marathon route

This is an extreme version of the potential route and is optional for highly experienced runners. The planned route follows Beinn Liath Mhor.

The run starts at Laire, less than five minutes from the New Lodge, and ends in Torridon by the village hall. The route follows part of the challenging Celtman marathon course and includes Beinn Eighe, one of Scotland’s most iconic Munros. A short ascent leads to the summit from the ridge before returning northwards and descending to the tarn. The route continues up the Coulin Pass. This route is not recommended without guides.

  • Distance: 42 km / 26.1 mi
  • Difficulty rating: 5/5

Retreat Ort

This hostel sits on the North Coast 500 (NC500) at the head of Upper Loch Torridon and is a popular base for hillwalkers, climbers, and those simply wishing to relax and enjoy the surroundings and local wildlife.

Wester Ross

This has to be on the visiting radar for anyone who loves Scotland’s wilderness. It’s in a still remote corner of the North West Highlands and sits on the famous North Coast 500. Torridon boasts some of the finest scenery in Europe and is a haven for hillwalkers, mountain bikers, and yes, runners.

The NC500 can be driven as well or cycled, in case you want to extend your visit. Or venture off the well-beaten track to Scotland’s unique North West Coast. The road from Torridon to Diabaig is definitely one not to be missed. The single-track road is only a few miles long, but it’s almost traffic-free and offers some of the most stunning views in Scotland.

Don’t you worry, you’ll be visiting the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve and National Trust for Scotland Estate, to catch glimpses of wildlife and sample freshly caught local seafood, while sitting back and soaking in the stunning scenery.

With so much to discover in the area, the Wild Running team will be happy to share their local knowledge, making sure you get the most out of your trip to this relaxing corner of Scotland’s North West Highlands.
