Program Description: Ashtanga and Classical Yoga

Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is a system of physical postures of Hatha yoga, intimately linked with the breath, combining specific sequences of postures (asanas), in conjunction with the breath (Vinyasa), while maintaining an internal focus of attention (Drishti). Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is traditionally practiced “individually” (Mysore self-practice); in the group, each practitioner is performing the asanas following his/her internal/own rhythm, according to his/her needs and ability, under the guidance of the teacher, being progressively guided to personal development and deeper understanding of the postures and the Ashtanga system in total. This unique method has become known under the name of “Mysore style”.

Patanjali’s “Yoga Sutra” form the epitome of this Science of the Soul. In just 195 verses, the sage sheds light on the working of the mind, making these ancient teachings equally relevant -not to say crucial- in our days. In his treatise, the sage Patanjali marked the ways in which the world we live in is being formed in our mind and determined the path that has to be followed by the practitioner, in order to overcome emotional pain and suffering. As he clearly states in Sutra 2.16: “Future suffering has to be avoided.”

A few words about the Origins of Ashtanga Yoga

An Immersion into the tradition of Hatha yoga. Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, introduced by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, is one of the world's most renowned systems of yoga. Inextricably linking physical postures with the breath, in a harmonious and dynamic flow, it is often described as “meditation in motion”. In the morning, it will be practiced in its most traditional form of self-practice, while in the afternoon session, we will delve into the study of each asana, drawing also inspiration from the traditional practice of Vinyasa Krama of Krishnamacharya, and his first book “Yoga Makaranda”. In this book, 96 asanas, which form the bulk of Ashtanga Vinyasa 1st and 2nd series, have been introduced for the first time.

The immersion into Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga will be complemented by the study (and practice) of the topmost scripture of Classical yoga, the “Yoga Sutras” of Patanjali, in which the eight-fold path of yoga, including the Yogin’s ethical precepts, and the practices of asana, pranayama, and meditation, have been clearly expounded for the first time in the history of yoga.

Driving directions

The retreat is located about 30 minutes South of the city of Kalamata, in a quiet olive grove amidst the sea and blue skies. The closest village Zen Rocks is Kallianeika.

Drive on the new freeway from Athens to Kalamata and be prepared to stop frequently for tolls. Expect to pay around 15 EUR each way. It may take you 2-2.5 hours to reach Kalamata.

Stay on the freeway and exit Kalamata heading towards Areopolis and Kitries. After the freeway ends, you will pass Lidl, and a café called Cosi on the right, and then the road forks and you see a road sign. At this point, you have the option of heading up towards the mountain towards Areopolis and Kardamyli or taking a right towards the sea and Kitries. You can reach the venue either way. Zen Rocks is giving you directions through the coastal road here, as it may be easier to find your location this way.

Take a right towards Kitries and drive down the coast for about 10-15 minutes. Right as you approach Kitries, the road goes uphill. There is a big retaining wall right in front of you, causing you to almost stop. You see a road sign for Doloi. Make a sharp left up the mountain towards Doloi. Drive for 5 minutes until you reach the village of Kalianeika. When you reach Kalianeika, stop in front of the church and set your odometer to 0.

Drive for one kilometer, and you will come to switch back turn where you will see a fence with big cacti and a huge rock. You are getting close. Immediately afterward, you see a second switchback turn and a couple of small signs for Zen Rocks. At this point leave the asphalt road and enter a smaller cement farm road. Drive 200 meters on cement, and then another 400 meters of dirt road. At this point, you will see the electrical posts and a cement road up on your left. This is the private driveway to Zen Rocks.

Attention: the driveway is the second paved road you see on your left. Do not take the first one, right where the cement ends, wait till you drive the extra 400 meters of dirt and pebble road and you come across the electrical wires and big posts. At this point you will also notice that the farm road you are on is covered with the cement of the paved driveway.) Go left on our cement road. It is a sharp incline. Come up on first gear and full throttle. Small cars will do fine if you know how to drive fearlessly.

Welcome to Zen Rocks. As Zen master Thich Nhat Hahn says: you have arrived!
