A day trip trekking and exploring Bali

Ujung Water Palace

Located some 20 minutes car ride from Zen Dive Bali is stunning water palace, Ujung, which is the sister site of Tirta Gangga, also built by the late raja of Karangasem. The complex consists of various large pools and historic structures set against a backdrop of Agung moutain and the eastern shoreline. It underwent a series of expansions and pool additions around a single existing pool which served not as a royal bathing place, but instead a site for punishment of accused proponents of black magic or Balinese witchcraft known as ‘pangiwa’ and ‘leyaks’.

Two ensuing pools were built adding to the Dirah pool, as well as a number of resting pavilions, the raja’s meditation quarters, and the Taman Gili floating pavilions. The complex then shifted purpose to serve as a retreat and a place to welcome dignitaries on their visit to the Karangasem kingdom. In 1921, during the Dutch occupation of Indonesia, Taman Ujung became an officially open to the public and became known as a royal water garden complex.

Charlie's chocolate factory

After the visit to Ujung, you will stop at a very special place, Charlie's chocolate factory. Entering the chocolate factory could give you feelings like walking into a different world. The buildings look like they ran away from the set of Lord of the Rings. This place is very different and eye-catching. Overlooking the ocean is a wooden pirate ship built as a children’s playground, surrounded by palm trees, and three of the swings in a row between those trees. It is a beautiful setting which can be observed with a cup or mouthful of chocolate.

Virgin Beach

As a well-deserved relaxation time, the day ends at the Virgin Beach. No hotels, villas, or any other tourist accommodations are visible from this beach, only views of Gili Biaha on the horizon. Fresh sea food will be served in one of many little "warungs" that offer local food, snacks, and beverages with available umbrella and sun loungers for the day.

Gili Mimpang and Tepekong

Gili Mimpang and Tepekong is located 10 to 15 minutes away by a traditional Balinese boat from Zen Dive Bali. This place is generally acknowledged as one of the best places to see sharks in Bali, and is also known as shark point. Mola molas are very often spotted at Gili Tepekong between September and October, enjoying being carefully cleaned by smaller fish.

This area offers some of the most impressive diving in Bali. Great walls, the canyon, strong currents coupled with superb corals, and marine life make this dive site for experienced divers only. It attracts big schools of sweetlips and jacks, big groupers, sharks, and pelagics like molas. A wide variety of conditions make Gili Tepekong Mimpang very interesting, similar to Penida. Advanced diving is always a challenge, and the chances of seeing deep-sea pelagics are quite high so anything may happen.

During diving at Gili Tepekong Mimpang, there is no shore access in the surface interval and lunch is served after the dives on Zen Dive Bali ocean view terrace. The boat ride can be choppy depending on a weather conditions and you do not hit dry land for lunch so prepare for a few hours on the boat and bring sun lotion and a hat.

Manta point

Manta point is located 20 minutes minibus ride to Padang Bay and 45 minutes by a speed boat from Zen Dive Bali. Manta point and Manta bay are at the far south side of Nusa Penida and are quite easy dives. Mantas can be seen cruising in formations of two to more than seven in very shallow seas at some five meters. There can be a surge present which keeps forcing divers to equalize continuously.

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is located 20 minutes minibus ride to Padang Bay and 45 minutes away by a speed boat from Zen Dive Bali. Nusa Penida is the largest, 17 kilometers long of three islands, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, and Nusa Ceningan, that lies on the other side of the Bandung Strait from Bali’s east coast. The water here is fairly cold, due to a deep upwelling south of Bali, but often startlingly clear, with gorgeous corals, prolific fish, some turtles, grey reef, and silver-tip sharks. From July to middle November, mola mola, the weird and wonderful ocean sunfish, can be seen here.

Nusa Penida is famous for its strong currents and beautiful hard corals covering long stretches of underwater walls and slopes. In order to enjoy most its beauty, you mainly make drift dives in this area and that is why it is advised to be a bit more than a beginner level diver. Eagle rays and sometimes dolphins are cruising along with divers over this reefs.

Padang Bay

Padang Bay is located 15 to 20 minutes away by a traditional Balinese boat from Zen Dive Bali. Padang Bay are actually eight different dive sites and the most famous is Blue Lagoon. Bottom composition is mainly sand ornate with stunning coral formations of great variety. Very common are massive table corals providing a protection to various small coral reef fish.

It is perfect for divers or photographers interested in unusual marine life as curious creatures are known to frolic these waters such as nudibranchs, strange walking scorpion fish, flying gurnards, pipefish, and turtles. Hidden gem in this area is dive site called the jetty and you can ask about it.

Rama reef

Rama reef is located one minute away by a boat from Zen Dive Bali. It is a flat coral reef, from six to nine meters deep and ideal for complete beginners or divers who need to brush up their diving skills.

Due to shallow depth, colors are stunning and coral formations can be up to one or two meter high, surrounded by array of fusiliers or larger schools of surgeon fish. Very often, visitors at Rama reef are two beautiful turtles. The marine life of Rama reef is very diverse with nudibranchs, surgeon fish, frog fish, white tip sharks, turtle, cleaner shrimps, cuttlefish, and squids.

Tulamben USAT Liberty shipwreck

Tulamben USAT Liberty shipwreck is located one hour away by a car from Zen Dive Bali. This wreck offers an unforgettable experience with a large number of fish life, fantastic coral, sponges, and fans.

The USAT Liberty is Bali's most famous diving destination. On 11 January, 1942, Liberty was torpedoed by Japanese submarine southwest of the Lombok Strait. US destroyer, Paul Jones, and Dutch destroyer, Van Ghent, took the damaged ship in tow attempting to harbor at Singaraja, on the north coast of Bali. However, she was taking too much water and so was beached on the eastern shore of Bali at Tulamben so that the cargo and fittings could be salvaged.

In 1963, the tremors associated with the eruption of Agung mountain caused the vessel to slip off the beach and she now lies on a sand slope in nine to 30 meters of water, providing one of the most popular dive sites off Bali and one of the easiest and calmest large World War II wreck dives in the world. To dive Tulamben USAT Liberty Shipwreck, you enter the water from the shore and swim for only about 30 meters before reaching the ship’s stern.

"We went on a trip to Manta Bay (Nusa Penida). My son scuba dives so he did that and the rest of us snorkelled. The boat ride took about one and a half hours and the sea was quite choppy. I get seasick easily and did feel unwell. They do carry pills and so these help if taken far enough in advance. However, this was more than compensated for by the manta rays and then the snorkeling in Crystal Bay where we stopped on the way back. My son subsequently went on four more dives with them so they really are good guys!"

"Jos and his team provided an excellent first time dive experience for myself and our two sons - so accommodating when we added eldest son to the group giving extra time for individual induction as necessary. We were in such capable and confidence instilling hands for our dive. Highly recommend Zen Dive Bali to all travelers heading to Candidasa."

"Dived the Liberty Wreck at Tulamben with Jos. We were all beginners and he took the time to make us feel comfortable and to refresh our skills at the beginning or the first dive. The dive was fantastic, we went all around and through parts of the wreck and saw heaps of sea life! We also got to see a lot of the real Bali on the drive there. Even stopped to see monkeys on the way!"

"We enjoyed five days of diving with Zen Dive Bali. We emailed them prior to our arrival and got always immediate replies which was very nice. We already had in mind which dive sites we wanted to see and they were very flexible and made all of them possible for us including a great night dive at Tulamben wreck. The prices include equipment, water in nice steel bottles (ecofriendly), and also lunch at the center or on the dive trips. They also let us dive unguided at the wreck as we were fairly experienced and we surely enjoyed it. Just the visibility underwater was not in our favour as it was very murky due to huge amount of algae in this time of year, but hey this is nature."

"My first introduction dive at Zen Dive Bali was a wonderful experience. Our very friendly diving instructor, Jos de Groot, did a great job in professional teaching. In the swimming pool, we practiced all the procedures not only until it went well, but more important until we felt comfortable to go into the open sea. At sea, Jos gave us a great underwater tour, it was impressive to be in this so completely different world."

"Thanks for this unforgettable first introduction dive, it will probably not be the last."

Throughout the week, we made more than 15 dives in different locations. After diving, you can relax in small warm pool, and that is very nice. "We spent three days diving with Jos and Kedek and had a wonderful time. I was nervous having not dived for two years and Jos was fantastic with me - calm, reassuring, and attentive, consequently we had a great day diving the Liberty wreck. The highlight of our Bali diving was our trip to Manta Point where Kedek and Wayn found us eight mantas who played around us for an hour, we then moved to another deserted dive site by Nusa Penida and drifted along a stunning wall where there was a huge abundance of amazing fish and a turtle. The Sub Ocean team (now rebranded as Zen Dive) make the trip fun, relaxed, and safe; we will definitely be diving with them again if we come back to Bali."

"My wife signed us up for a package which included diving, yoga, and spa. She finished her Open Water certification under Marissa (we had a great time with her). We did our diving in Tulamben and Padang Bai. Tulamben was excellent - visibility was very good and it was a unique experience diving around the wreck. We saw quite a fair bit of marine life in Padang Bai (lion fish, mantis shrimp, scorpion fish, nudibranch, rays etc., and even a tourist submarine cruising past us!) but no frog fish. The crew was friendly, professional, and the diving equipment was new and well-maintained. We also enjoyed our yoga classes and spa (we stayed at the Rama Candidasa next door) - it was a very enjoyable trip and we'll come back again."
