During this holiday, you will be accommodated at the Zen Buddhist and Yoga Retreat, a panoramic and secluded retreat center overlooking the Conondale Valley and the mountains beyond. The temperate climate there allows beautiful gardens to flourish, bringing in prolific birdlife and fauna.

Kintamani room

The Kintamani room has a single bunk on top and a double bed on the bottom and has an ensuite bathroom. It is for a maximum of two people.

The garden rooms

There are two garden rooms, each with a single bed. It is for a maximum of one person in each room. The garden rooms share a large bathroom.

The Ubud room

The Ubud room has two single beds. It is for a maximum of two people.

Uluwatu room

The Uluwatu room has a single bunk on top and a double bed on the bottom. It is for a maximum of two people. Two single guests may share the bunk room. The Ubud and Uluwatu rooms share a large bathroom with twin vanities and a separate toilet.

Program

During this program, Zen Buddhist & Yoga Retreat's Zen Master Fushin will share his Tai Chi practice as a moving meditation. Their yoga instructor, Rose, will build on the yoga class so that beginners to intermediate can enjoy the practice with the understanding it is not about flexibility but where the mind is. Introducing the concept of Mindfulness in your life will become a way to step back and observe your thoughts and emotions to aid you in acting consciously and not re-acting unconsciously.

This retreat is designed to promote clarity and well-being in body, mind, and spirit. It is designed to help you achieve a feeling of peace of mind with the focus on finding a state of stillness and silence within. This is a quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, giving a break from the 'day in, day out' duties of life. The program is based on ancient yogic Veda practices, Zen Buddhist teachings, and mindfulness meditation.

Zen Buddhist and Yoga Retreats is a serious yoga, meditation, and Zen knowledge program for students, from beginners to intermediate levels. Guests can join in with as little or as many sessions as they require to find the peace and relaxation that they are searching for. The yoga asana portion of the program will aid with the improvement of the physical health of the body and strengthen the spirit so that you become aware of the interaction between body, mind, and self.

Your yoga asana sessions are not about how flexible you are but where the mind is when holding a pose. The aim is to move every joint for lubrication, mobilization, and longevity. The Zen portion of the program will bring clarity to the mind and knowledge. Understanding will result in wisdom and will further strengthen the spirit. Fushin will also share his Taichi practice with you. In the evenings, they offer activities such as mantra, singing bowl meditation, Yoga Nidra, and Zen armchair chats are offered.

In turn, you will learn to be mindful before speaking or acting. Zen knowledge will teach patience and tolerance and offer a feeling of peace and silence within. The goal of the Zen portion of the program is to give the participant the information that regular practice will bring them to a state of peace of mind and emotional contentment. The information will be transmitted slowly, little by little, building it up each day.

There will be time to contemplate that knowledge to have an understanding of it. Together, with mindful Zen meditation practice and the knowledge, it will lead the mind to a state of stillness, silence, and clarity. When knowledge and understanding are placed in the stillness and silence of a mind of clarity, the outcome is wisdom on the subject contemplated.

Retreat location

Maleny is located in the hinterland behind the Sunshine Coast, approximately 100 kilometers north of Brisbane. The area is of a temperate climate with surf beaches around 40 minutes away, bush walks a short drive and waterfalls in the district.

Food

Your meals are mindfully prepared vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free from thousand-year-old recipes from along the Silk Road. Each day, the breakfast will consist of a toasting item with spreads, cereal, fruit juice, and yogurt. Vegans and dairy-free guests will be supplied with either a chia pudding or vegan yogurt. Gluten-free guests will be supplied with a gluten-free cereal.

  • Mediterranean spinach and ricotta Canneloni - vegetarian
  • Greek salad - vegetarian and gluten-free (remove Feta and it is vegan and dairy-free)
  • Homemade bread - vegetarian

You can make your own salad sandwich or wrap or just enjoy a salad on its own.

  • Raita - a cucumber and yogurt side accompaniment for the curry - vegetarian, gluten-free

  • Hommus, Turkish bread, and olives (rice crackers for gluten-free guests) - vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free

If you are vegan, dairy-free, or gluten-free, Zen Buddhist & Yoga Retreat requires a minimum of one week notice prior to your arrival to ensure they have the products for you at hand. For gluten-free guests, one loaf of gluten-free bread will be supplied for the three and four-day retreats and two loaves will be supplied for the five, six, or seven-day retreats. Gluten-free and dairy-free guests please advise if products that say 'may contain...' is a problem.

For other allergies, you can advise of your allergies and they may be able to conform but not in all instances. They apologize in advance if your allergy causes anaphylactic shock. Due to their remote location, they feel it would be irresponsible to accept you as their guest. Thank you for understanding. Please note that vegan is dairy-free.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Brisbane Airport (BNE). From the airport, catch the train to Landsborough Train Station. From the train station, there is a connecting coach that will take you up the hill to Maleny where Zen Buddhist & Yoga Retreat will pick you up from. They are around one and a half hours' drive from the center of Brisbane.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 20% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid 30 days before arrival.
