Martin fell in love with yoga when his job with a large Swiss company made him move his life from Zurich, Switzerland, to New York City where he took his first yoga class ever at Cyndi Lees OM Yoga Center. A couple of years later, he graduated from OM Yogas renowned teacher training and has since then successfully pursued his vision to make the benefits of yoga available to as many people as possible.
Based in Basel Switzerland, he works as an independent yoga teacher. In addition, as a consultant for large multinational companies, he has been teaching all aspects of yoga to employees and managers from all over the world, from all realms of life. He has been invited to teach workshops and retreats in London and Italy. During his travels to India, he studied Sivananda and Ashtanga yoga.
Martin is passionate about Acroyoga which has been a transformative journey from him both physically, mentally, and spiritually. He is a certified Acro yoga teacher. In 2014, he completed his advanced teacher trainings studies with Doug Swenson, one of the most experienced yoga teachers with more than 40 years of teaching experience. Martin has taught more than 2000 classes to students from all skill levels and, together with his wife, he also runs training programs for yoga teachers. Committed to continuing education, he currently finished his advanced anatomy studies with Leslie Kaminoff, New York, one of the most respected anatomy teachers in the yoga world, as well as his advanced studies in human anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics with Jason Ray Brown and Katy Bowman.
Martin is the president of yogacommunity.ch, a non-profit organization based in Basel, Switzerland, that organizes donation-based yoga events and runs the first purely donation-based yoga studio in Basel. In 2015, Martin started to write his first book, Yoga Your Path to Health, Happiness and Freedom and his dream is to finish and publish it by the end of 2017.
His classes are playful, infused with his dry sense of humor and based on his unique approach to teach yoga poses that help you to strengthen your body and mind, release tension and stress both physically and mentally. Be ready to be surprised!
Yoga has healed Martin from severe back and knee pains from which he suffered before. While working often 16 hours per day, he had lost the ability to relax physically and mentally and unhealthy habits had caused him significant heart problems. For Martin, yoga has helped him to return onto a path of health, happiness, and freedom. He thinks that yoga can help you to get in touch with your true self, to be physically fit and mentally balanced. This can give you enormous strength and energy from within to live your life more fully, more mindfully, and more peacefully and in harmony with your environment.
Martin holds degrees both in Psychology (MSc) as well as in Business Administration (BA).
Vanessa started practicing yoga in 1998 as a university student in California. In her first class, she glimpsed yogas profound benefits: new inner calm, greater mental clarity, and more physical energy. It marked the start of her lifelong exploration of yoga, meditation, and the mind-body connection.
In 2000, Vanessa began a daily Ashtanga yoga practice with senior teachers Steve Dwelley and Michele Nichols, after falling in love with the rigor and discipline of the tradition. Shortly after, she travelled to India to study directly with the founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. In University, she focused her studies on southeast Asian religion to delve more deeply into the roots of yoga and yoga philosophy.
Ashtanga has remained her core yoga practice over the years, and she went on to study with a number of senior Ashtanga teachers in California and New York, including Maty Ezraty, under whom she recently completed her Yoga Alliance teacher certification (RYT200).
Vanessas yoga practice and teaching style has also been influenced by many renowned teachers outside the Ashtanga school, including Erich Schiffmann, author of Moving into Stillness; Sarah Powers, founder of the Insight Yoga Institute; and Carrie Oewerko, a senior level Iyengar teacher.
Vanessa enjoys sharing yogas profound mental and physical benefits through teaching traditional Ashtanga as well as dynamic flow classes. Her teaching focuses on opening and energizing the body through invigorating sequences with intelligent alignment. She emphasizes a light-hearted and compassionate approach that allows students to challenge themselves in a safe environment and to experience, in their own personal way, the transformative power of yoga.
Vanessa holds a Masters degree in Journalism from Northwestern University, Medill School of Journalism, and a Bachelors degree in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
