    Beach cabana

Most of Ashiyana's beach huts are located on the dune which separates Mandrem river from the Arabian Sea. The others are located on the mainland facing the river. There are hut sheltered behind the banks of the dune and others on the dune top. They all come with an en-suite bathroom, fan, and mosquito net. Whilst being the economy section of the accommodation, they have recently been lovingly upgraded with simple, yet chic interior-designed finishes.

    Palm groove

Much of Ashiyana's accommodation is in a beautiful palm grove fronting the Mandrem River and facing towards the sea, which can be viewed from some of the upper-floor balconies. The accommodation is in the form of luxury eco-lodges, tree-houses, and stone-built houses set amidst lush tropical gardens, statues and, water features.

The lodges and tree-houses are built of local wood giving an Indonesian feel, though most finishing touches are borrowed from classical Indian design, with plenty of natural fabrics and antique furniture.

    Raj double

The Raj area of Ashiyana is located at the far end of the Palm grove, and is fronted on two sides by the tranquil Mandrem river. Some of the rooms are within the Ashiyana Villa, which was built on the site of the original (fisherman) owner's storehouse, the others are sited along an inlet of the Mandrem river. Three of the Raj rooms are doubles, and five are magnificent suites with stunning views.

All of the Raj rooms are organically shaped and stone-built, with rustic stucco walls, antique Rajasthani furniture, and sumptuous soft furnishings. No two rooms are the same, each having its individual charm and magnificent view from windows and balcony.

Yoga, therapeutic movement, and chi gung workshops

There will will always be one Iyengar-based yoga workshop a day, either in the morning or late afternoon. The Iyengar method is typified by focusing on correct alignment, holding the poses for long periods of time to experience the therapeutic benefit and by the use of props. There are three fully equipped yoga shalas in the grounds. Mats, blocks, bolsters, straps, chairs and blankets are all provided.

There will be an opportunity for you to individually discuss your yoga experience and physical history with YogaMC so that they can tailor the workshops to your needs, either giving more introductions, corrections or challenges! Clothing should be comfortable and stretchy or loose enough for full body movement.

    What to expect

    • A clear and essential foundation in yoga asana (Iyengar method), concentrating on physical alignment, and the therapeutic benefits of yoga via the use of props and supports.
    • Cultivation of an holistic approach to the body and mind with awareness and sensitivity to all eight limbs of yoga.
    • An individual approach that ensures you flow into your practice at your own pace, whether you are new to yoga and wanting to settle into the basics or if you are looking to deepen a well-established practice and be challenged.
    • Yoga asana is complimented by and integrated with pranayama (the art of breathing), yoga Nidra, mindfulness, meditation, chi gung, moving meditation, Ayur-balance massage, and Osho dynamic meditation.
    • Elsa Silva

Elsa has a background in martial arts and is one of the most sought-after therapeutic practitioners at Ashiyana, with many people needing to wait to see her in high season! When not giving massage, or practicing yoga, Elsa will be managing and directing the spa throughout the season. As part of YogaMC, Elsa will be on hand, assisting in all classes as well as providing you with a full body Ayur-balance massage treatment during your stay.

    • Prashant Tewatia

Prashant has been a regular fixture at Ashiyana, having taught the morning classes there for over four years. For those of you returning to this tranquil and idyllic paradise, you will no doubt have taken one of his yoga classes, attended an evening meditation or chi gung session with him or received his warm welcome, council or company at some point during your stay. Receiving, teaching and taking care of guests is second nature to Prashant, and is evident in many testimonials.

    • Daniell Alnuma

Daniell will be teaching Tazrimim - a dance created and taught by Daniell. Tazrimim (flux or flowing in Hebrew) recalls the Arabic “Taksime”, a word used in music to signify the act of improvising, or in other words, modulating the musical flux. As such, dancing is the modulation of the flux that is passing through the dancing body, including the emotional flux that gives the dramatic intensity to the dance.

This retreat will be held in Ashiyana Yoga Center, a tropical retreat centre located on the beautiful and unspoiled Mandrem beach and the enchanting Mandrem river in the very north of Goa.
