Most of Ashiyana's beach huts are located on the dune which separates Mandrem river from the Arabian Sea. The others are located on the mainland facing the river. There are hut sheltered behind the banks of the dune and others on the dune top. They all come with an en-suite bathroom, fan, and mosquito net. Whilst being the economy section of the accommodation, they have recently been lovingly upgraded with simple, yet chic interior-designed finishes.
Much of Ashiyana's accommodation is in a beautiful palm grove fronting the Mandrem River and facing towards the sea, which can be viewed from some of the upper-floor balconies. The accommodation is in the form of luxury eco-lodges, tree-houses, and stone-built houses set amidst lush tropical gardens, statues and, water features.
The lodges and tree-houses are built of local wood giving an Indonesian feel, though most finishing touches are borrowed from classical Indian design, with plenty of natural fabrics and antique furniture.
The Raj area of Ashiyana is located at the far end of the Palm grove, and is fronted on two sides by the tranquil Mandrem river. Some of the rooms are within the Ashiyana Villa, which was built on the site of the original (fisherman) owner's storehouse, the others are sited along an inlet of the Mandrem river. Three of the Raj rooms are doubles, and five are magnificent suites with stunning views.
All of the Raj rooms are organically shaped and stone-built, with rustic stucco walls, antique Rajasthani furniture, and sumptuous soft furnishings. No two rooms are the same, each having its individual charm and magnificent view from windows and balcony.
This retreat will be held in Ashiyana Yoga Center, a tropical retreat centre located on the beautiful and unspoiled Mandrem beach and the enchanting Mandrem river in the very north of Goa.
There will will always be one Iyengar-based yoga workshop a day, either in the morning or late afternoon. The Iyengar method is typified by focusing on correct alignment, holding the poses for long periods of time to experience the therapeutic benefit and by the use of props. There are three fully equipped yoga shalas in the grounds. Mats, blocks, bolsters, straps, chairs and blankets are all provided.
There will be an opportunity for you to individually discuss your yoga experience and physical history with YogaMC so that they can tailor the workshops to your needs, either giving more introductions, corrections or challenges! Clothing should be comfortable and stretchy or loose enough for full body movement.
Ashiyana is a 90-minute taxi journey from Goa International Airport (GOI). Pre-paid government taxis are available as you exit the airport terminal, or YogaMC can organize a local Mandrem taxi to collect you for approximately 1200 INR.
From 10 a.m.
Wi-Fi is offered in Ashiyana in a secluded area only during certain times and they ask that you be very mindful in Ashiyana with any electronic devices, as they wish to maintain a quiet, calm space. There are nearby restaurants and Internet cafes that offer free Wi-Fi as well.
Ashiyana Retreat Centre has yoga mats that are available for all guests and drop-in attendees, but they always recommend bringing your own for hygienic reasons. You can also purchase yoga mats at the shops nearby.
Ashiyana does not offer toilet paper as they wish to be as eco-friendly as possible. If you wish to use toilet paper, it can be purchased at the local convenience store.
All foreign nationals visiting India are required a visa to enter.
Malaria is not really prevalent in Goa, as it is surrounded by tidal water. They suggest using mosquito repellent. Please check with your country's health regulations for any vaccinations that are required.
Goa is a very relaxed part of India, so it is especially safe to travel alone as a woman.
