Sailing and Yoga Retreat Italy

While sailing, it is important to be always focused on the present moment. And so it is with yoga. Is the course taken still the right one or do you need to change it? Am I placing my feet correctly or do I need to rotate them a bit? Does the wind change or is it dead calm now? Am I feeling my body better compared to yesterday? Developing and having plans is right and helpful. But especially while sailing and while practicing yoga the sense of being here and now develops.

Is yoga and sailing the right holiday option for you? Yes, if you would like to experience yoga and sailing actively, would like to recharge and disconnect with the help of sea, sun, and wind. In this holiday, you will live together on a sailing boat like a team, cooking, tidying up after meals, and keeping the cabin and bathroom clean together. If the afternoon or evening is not spent swimming, sailing, or sightseeing, you will also have evening yoga sessions of 60 to 75 minutes. Relax time is guaranteed and big cleanings and final cleaning of the boat will be done by the skipper and the yoga teacher.

Often you need to be flexible and adapt to the present wind and body situation and both disciplines develop a sense for the present moment. Pulling lines, setting sails, steering the boat, and through asanas, exercises on body, breath and meditation techniques, they bring your spirit back to the present moment, obtaining clarity and strength. Yoga and sailing combines the yogic capacity to feel the body with the development of a feeling for the here and now needed for sailing.

You will wake up in a quiet bay a few laps away from the next beach where the yoga class takes place. The bravest swim, the laziest take the dinghy ashore. Should you sleep in a marina overnight then the yoga class takes place on a quiet dock. After the yoga class there is time for swimming back to the boat, you will enjoy a healthy, tasty, organic vegetarian brunch, and set sail to the next destination. Depending on the sail plan and wind conditions, the yoga class could be held in the afternoon. This is discussed in team with the skipper and the yoga teacher day by day.

Experience in yoga is not required and the yoga classes are tailored to the needs of your holiday. A yoga class usually starts with dynamic positions and continues with static and meditative exercises. By breathing exercises you will get in tune with nature and the sea around you, in order to concentrate within yourselves. Alessandra tailors the program to the needs of the group. For those who are interested an evening meditation, it can additionally be incorporated into the program.

Experience in sailing is also not required. If you are an experienced sailor, Ghego welcomes you to join running of the boat and if you have limited experience then this is a chance to participate and learn if that appeals to you.

Below you find two possible sailing routes examples that provide an idea of the area where you will sail. Although they do their best daily to make the most out of the route they must remind that they are very much dependent on the wind speed and direction. An idea of the route is very clear and the actual plan is done by the skipper and yoga instructor on a daily basis. You will begin your holiday in Cannigione, a perfect starting location and gateway to the archipelago.

  • Alessandra

Alessandra was born and grew up close to Bologna, Italy. She studied at the University of Bologna and then continued her studies in Vienna. Upon graduation she worked first in the development cooperation sector and then for a consumer goods multinational. Eight years ago on a Sunday morning she was dragged by her housemate to the first yoga class of her lifetime, and since then she has never stopped. She began practicing yoga in the Sivananda style. At that time she was living in Southeast Asia, so she took the opportunity to explore the techniques of Buddhist meditation.

  • Francesco

Francesco begins his navigator career in 1994 as a sailing instructor in Sardinia. During this time he travels the routes of the Mediterranean. In 1996, he crossed the Atlantic for the first time and navigates two years a variety of sailing boats between the Caribbean Sea, Venezuela, and the United States. After that follows the world tour on a Mauric 64th. Since 1998, Francesco works on yachts from 72 to 110 feet long. This work leads him to sail around the Mediterranean and to cross the Atlantic again.

There are probably few places in the world which offer better sailing environment than the Maddalena Archipelago, North Sardinia, and South Corsica. The archipelago is located on the Strait of Bonifacio, between Sardinia and Corsica. It comprises of seven main islands (and a few smaller ones) in Sardinia, a few more islands of the archipelago belonging to Corsica, France. The Italian part of the archipelago makes up one of the 23 Italian national parks. The islands of the Archipelago are all within easy reach of one another, making your journey easy through crystal clear turquoise water and consistent winds. Every day is a new adventure through stunning landscapes and waters. The sailing route of the week is between 45 and 65 nautical miles (or between 22 - 26 hours of sailing) and is customized to the group and of course the wind and weather conditions.

Alessandra and Francesco are both culinary foodies, and love to source and eat fresh produce. Only vegetarian meals are prepared in Yogaandsailing galley, comprising of the following:

  • Snack, fruits, and tea or coffee before the morning yoga (the emptier the stomach is before yoga, the better)
  • Brunch after the morning yoga session
  • Afternoon snacks, fruits, and drinks
  • Dinner after mooring and anchoring

The food choice is largely based on organic products. However this cannot be guaranteed in all harbors, where they stop also in order to stock up their pantry. Fruits and vegetables are purchased from local suppliers from the region and Yogaandsailing also makes sure to introduce to you plenty of local Sardinian specialities. Alcoholic beverages are not available on board, but can be brought or bought in Cannigione before you slip moorings and sail away.
