Thai massage and yoga go hand in hand. You will be working the lines of the body to flush out negative energies and bring in the positive as well as increasing range of motion, circulation and overall the bodies ability to move and perform. One more active, one more passive, both essential arts to a well-rounded body and soul. Yoga "flows" and Thai massage also "flows".

Smooth transitions will define both of these arts and so you will learn not only the flows of yoga but the flows of Thai massage whether you are giving or receiving. Wonderful skills will be learned in the arts of Thai massage to supplement your yoga practice and life whether you are massaging someone else or just yourself. You will know the blueprint for these ancient and wonderful systems of care.

Yoga in the morning, Thai massage in the afternoon

Your days will begin with a daily morning yoga practice with JJ and Ryan followed by a breakfast prepared with local organic ingredients. The day times are yours to enjoy however you want; relax with a massage, go to the beach, hang out by the pool. You may explore the surroundings with an excursion like zip lining, jungle tours, etc. Afternoons will be filled with guided Thai massage sessions. The sessions are like following a yoga class where JJ and Ryan demonstrate techniques and guide through actions as well as words.

The week will begin with simple sequences for lying on the back / stomach and will progress to more advanced techniques through the week. After your guided Thai massage workshops, dinner will be served. Practitioners will work with each other to give and receive a massage each and every day. If you plan to come with someone specific, you can work with them the whole week. If you come alone, you can choose your partner each day. It is recommended to switch to a new partner each day.

In this retreat, you will escape into a world of relaxation, rejuvenation, and magic. Thai massage will add a new level to your current practice and does wonders for longevity and endurance of your practice. You will open a new path of healing for yourself. You will have a week of amazing self-care through mindfulness, yoga, and amazing food balanced with the compassionate work of Thai massage. All levels welcome whether you are coming solo or with a massage partner.

  • John James "JJ" Pepper

    University of Texas (Kinesiology)

John James Pepper is a yoga instructor, Thai massage therapist, kinesiologist and trainer with a degree from the University of Texas. It was there he fell in love with movement as he played collegiate sports and studied. That brought about untimely injuries that turned out to be extremely fortunate. Through these injuries, JJ realized the importance of training not just the body and mind but the spirit as well. He dove into meditation and this led him to pursue healing arts to supplement his training background, the two most namely being yoga and Thai massage.

This retreat will take place in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It is one of the only six blue zones in the world where people consistently live to over 100 years.

  • Drive about an hour keeping on the same road.
  • Pass through the towns of Filadelfia, Belen and Santa Cruz.
  • Take a right into Nicoya after Santa Cruz where you will see signs for Nicoya.
  • Continue straight down the main road until you are forced to make a right once in Nicoya.
  • Make your first left.
  • Continue right through the center of town.
  • Make a left when it ends and then your next right (at its end).
  • Stay on this road for nearly 30 kilometers.
  • Stay on the main road even when you encounter several turns along the way.
  • Look for signs pointing to either Nosara or Samara if you are in doubt.
  • Pay attention and be aware of speed bumps, pot holes, pedestrians, bicycles, dogs and numerous other obstacles along the way. All of the bridges along this stretch of highway are wide enough for only one vehicle at a time.
  • Pull aside and let oncoming traffic through if you have a Ceda sign and there are cars coming in the other direction. There will be a Ceda (Yield) sign on one side of every bridge.
  • Drive about 30-40 minutes and you'll see a gas station on your left.
  • Slow way down immediately after the gas station where the main road turns to the left and you'll see a sign for Nosara on your right.
  • Turn onto this road.
  • Drive for about 25 kilometers on a gravel road from here. The road is occasionally graded, so depending on its condition the drive should take between 45 minutes and one-half hours. During the dry season, it can be very dusty. If you see locals walking or riding a horse along the way, please slow down to avoid covering them in your dust.
  • Turn right and continue on your way after about 10 kilometers where the road comes to a T intersection where you'll see signs for Nosara. When you reach Playa Garza, you are at the beach. This is a beautiful spot and a great place to take a rest if you need one.
  • Continue on over a hill and down to Playa Guiones otherwise.
  • Continue drive and you will come into Playa Guiones and see businesses like Coconut Harry’s Surf Shop and National Car Rental. The employees at National are very friendly and know us well so if you are lost or need to call us you can certainly ask them for help.
  • Keep driving as you are still a bit south of Nosara at this point.
  • Drive after a few more kilometers and you'll see signs for Playa Pelada.
  • Continue straight ahead towards the village of Nosara.
  • Take your next left, a half mile after the gas station, located on the right-hand side where you will see a large gas station.
  • Continue on this road where you will see a sign for Ostional or Playa Ostional and also a sign for Costa Rica Yoga Spa.
  • Cross a bridge.
  • Take a right immediately after the bridge. You will see a sign for Costa Rica Yoga Spa here as well.
  • Follow this road until you come to another “T”.
  • Take a left there.
  • Drive about 400 meters down this road and Costa Rica Yoga Spa's entrance is on the right. You will see our sign and a black iron gate and a wall with Mayan type design on it.
  • Go up the drive on your left you will see Costa Rica Yoga Spa's reception office.
  • Stop there to check in.
  • Continue up the drive all the way to the top and follow the sign for drop off if it is after hours and no one is there. Costa Rica Yoga Spa will look forward to your arrival.

Please book your flight to arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR).

If flying into Liberia, Costa Rica Yoga Spa recommends a ground shuttle to the Costa Rica Yoga Spa (two-half hours). If flying into San Jose, Costa Rica Yoga Spa recommends a transfer by air to Nosara. Also, if you fly into San Jose, Yoga with Ryan recommends Nature Air for a quick and scenic flight to Nosara. Nature Air flies into Nosara from San Jose in just 40 minutes and is recommended over a taxi. However, The Costa Rica Yoga Spa also offers free local (Nosara) pick-up and drop-off at the airport or other hotels in town.

There is a bus that runs from San Jose to Nosara daily, leaving the city at 5.30 a.m. and arriving in Nosara at 12 p.m. (Alfaro Bus, costs 10 USD).

Arrival by shuttle

Costa Rica Yoga Spa recommends CR Terratour for shuttle service from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) and Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) for their reliability, professionalism and proven experience. If you are flying into Liberia, CR Terratour costs 50 USD for the shared shuttle each way and leaves Liberia at 2 p.m. Private shuttles for up to five people cost 130 USD. CR Terratour also has shuttles returning to the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) daily at 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

It is always best to confirm your pick-up or drop-off times with shuttle companies directly as they may vary. If you want a private shuttle from San Jose, they start at 240 USD each way and take about six hours. Shuttles and private taxis coming from Liberia and San Jose are not included and are the responsibility of the guest to reserve.
