The yoga retreat in Byron Bay is based on the classical teachings of yoga as taught by Swami Sivananda and the 5 points of yoga of Swami Vihnudevananda, as taught in the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashrams around the world for over 50 years. For those who are experienced, you will go deeper into the practice. If you are a beginner, you will learn step by step how to take yourself on this journey at your own pace.

About the retreat

Most people look to go on a yoga retreat so that they can relax and rejuvenate. There are many on offer with yoga classes, massages and with lots of free time to read and go to the beach or do whatever else the mind finds attractive or what it relates to relaxation. But did you know that relaxation is not really rejuvenating unless you can disconnect from your thoughts even for a few moments?

What most people do not realize is that yoga is a science, a science of body and more importantly of mind. This ancient science has been shared with us through the scriptures of yoga.

The yoga classes are taught in a specific way to maximize the movement of energy through the body, benefiting also the mind and the spirit. It cannot be intellectually created or randomly formed. In this way, the practitioner fully rejuvenates from the core of their being. The experience of a properly taught yoga class is not just one of exhilaration, blowing off steam after a hard days work, but there should be that feeling of complete balance. A feeling of lightness, that everything will be okay. The purpose of the retreat is so that you can experience the true essence of a yoga practice and understand what it means to do yoga.

You will learn what the benefits are of practicing all the aspects of yoga (thats right, yoga does not only mean physical postures). It will show you that you can reach a state of reconnecting to your true self (that inner you and the 'peace' that everyone speaks of) through having some basic knowledge and tools, so that you can feel what it is like to live like a yogi (without all the cooking).

At the London ashram, he taught week-long residential courses in yoga anatomy and regular courses in meditation, vegetarian cooking, yoga philosophy, and daily yoga classes and workshops. He teaches with dynamism, precision, and care. His classes are meticulously prepared, intelligently executed, and engaging.

  • Shyamala

Shyamala lived as full-time voluntary staff in the Sivananda Ashram in London for two years. With the blessings of her master and yoga guru, she is very happy to return to Australia and be able to offer her experience through the yoga classes in Byron Bay. Whilst working to deepen her yoga practice in all aspects, she taught once or twice daily yoga classes, pregnancy yoga, yoga courses, meditation, and yoga philosophy.

It is a mystical sacred land charged with uplifting spiritual vibrations used in the past by Aboriginals for rituals and still continues to draw an eclectic mix of modern day spiritual seekers. "I have just returned from a 5day retreat with Yoga White Lotus and it has been life-changing! I have a whole new positive perspective on life thanks to my teachers Madhava & Shymala. They are passionate and devoted to the Sivananda Yoga Tradition, and they share their lives as they teach you about how their practice nourishes the mind, body and the soul. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the practice, including the meditation, asanas and chanting. The week was a lot of fun and has given me increased energy and helpful tips that I can implement into my daily life at home. I can't thank both of you enough for what you have taught me. I will see you again soon. Om Shanti, Laura"

"I had the great pleasure of participating in the Prenatal Yoga classes at Yoga White Lotus. I had done a little yoga on and off in the past but had never been a committed Yogi. Regular yoga during pregnancy has helped me immensely; both to gain strength and flexibility in my body but also to find a centred, peaceful and relaxed place in my mind to treasure during this special time of life. The yoga taught by Shyamala and Madhava also links beautifully with the antenatal teachings of Calmbirth. Yoga White Lotus has been the perfect place to be (re-)introduced to the benefits of yoga. I hope to continue my practice after baby arrives!"

"I recently completed the one week retreat at sacred Mt. Warning, what a spectacular place! Madhava and Shymala bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and most importantly compassion and love to their practice and were always there for guidance and support. I really enjoyed hearing and learning about the true meaning of Yoga and understanding more deeply the spiritual path, this was a big part of the retreat and really grounds you on, why you are doing the physical part of yoga and how it is all connected to the ultimate goal of conciousness and the divine. I would recommend the Retreat to anyone who wants to understand Yoga on a deeper level or enhance their current practice of Yoga. Thank You once again Madhava and Shymala :) "
