Your accommodation is literally footsteps away from crystalline waters. Completely undeveloped incredible stretches of sand lie only ten minutes’ walk away. In the other direction deserted rocky coves and caves provide the ultimate opportunity for total peace as well as rock jumping and snorkeling adventures.

Hammocks are a very important part of your retreat experience and there, Yoga Rocks Crete has loads. Each practical and user-friendly room has a bathroom, fridge, and outlook from the hammocked balcony or terrace over the Mediterranean Sea. Aside from the terrace where you eat lunch and dinner, there is also a comfortable breakfast lounge for all-day nibbling and lazing. There is always a spot for peaceful seclusion or easy socializing.

Program

Morning explorations of meditation and pranayama are followed by welcoming, lively Vinyasa yoga. Comfortable yet challenging asana is tailored to the group with plenty of individual attention and variations, so all get the most out of their practice. The afternoon yoga will be focused on specific areas to accompany the mornings and get into those darker corners you shy away from. It’s here you can learn the most about yourselves.

Having experienced so many of today’s great teachers Helen looks forward to using this reservoir of experience to create retreats that lift your practice to wherever it needs to go. Moving the benefits of yoga off the mat into real life is a primary goal and an inevitable result of regular and wholeheartedly practicing yoga, Helen believes. Guests should leave with an increased ability to glide over problematic situations and return to a life filled with energy and enthusiasm.

The southern coast of Crete is a magical playground of deserted beaches and imposing rock formations. Yoga Rocks sits on a sheltered bay with a couple of refreshment options and easy explorations to the east and west. Friendly local towns, half an hour’s drive away, make for a happy afternoon's amble, and further afield are historical sites, waterfalls, and gorges.

Food

The scrumptious vegetarian lunch and dinner are served on the terrace overlooking the sea. At all times guests are welcome to a wide range of teas, including medicinal Cretan mountain teas, as well as fresh coffee, fruit, and nuts. For breakfast help yourself to fruit, local honey with homemade yogurt or homemade peanut butter, jams, and sourdough bread.

Their nutritious, delicious food draws inspiration from the Cretan diet which is reputedly the healthiest in the world. Detoxify with fresh, quality, local produce. They mainly source fruit and vegetables directly from farmers - organic where possible. Fertile mountain slopes and bountiful sunshine produce some of the tastiest fruit and vegetables, which, when prepared with love (and local olive oil), resulting in mouth-watering yet healthy cuisine.

Enjoy your buffet feasts as an integral part of your yoga holiday. The retreat is non-smoking, alcohol-free, and vegetarian. Meat eaters consistently return overjoyed with the variety and taste on the buffet. There is a taverna very close, and two friendly cafes on the bay for those with any extra needs.

Things to do (optional)

There are many things to do round the retreat and further afield. Most guests do very little and simply relax. Here’s a mini guide to possible options:

Massage

There is always at least one kind of high quality massage on offer, ranging from oil massage and Thai massage to deep holistic healing. We have some incredibly talented masseurs and it’s a great way to complete your relaxation. A therapy session here should work well together with the yoga on the holiday.

Hammock rime

We recommend spending as much time as possible in one of the many hammocks around the retreat. Time slows, perspective shifts and insight arises. An undervalued yoga technique Hammock yoga – surrender to the peace.

Library & film night

Our library has a good selection of yoga and reading books and if it suits the week we sometimes have a film night.

Beaches & swimming

There three beautiful beaches within walking distance along with little coves and many sandy stretches if you hire a car for the week. Our local bay can be accessed down some stone steps from the retreat. A ten minute walk away over the headland is a completely unspoiled long stretch of sandy beach. Beyond that are Triopetra’s beaches.

Snorkelling

It is not prolific tropical reef but there are some nice fish and the visibility can be mind blowing. Click here to check out some of the fish you may see.

Walking

There are lots of nice walks around the retreat.

Spili

A popular afternoon out is to go to Spili which is about forty minutes drive and has many shops for tasteful souvenirs and tavernas for, amongst other things, traditional ice coffee.

Agia Galini

Agia Galini is a pleasant seaside holiday town 30 minutes by car east of Agios Pavlos. It is a busy little place with shopping and you will appreciate the peace and quiet of Yoga Rocks on your return.

Matala

A little further afield from Yoga Rocks is Matala where Joni Mitchell and lots of other hippies once lived in caves. You can see the caves (that were once Roman burial caves), a nice beach and lots of tourist shops. Guests return with completely conflicting reviews but we like it! It makes a nice addition to a day out at Phaistos which is on the way to Matala.

There are so many things to do on Crete, some just too far to do in day trips whist on retreat. We’re happy to help if you fancy extending your holiday on the island after the retreat. You can use some of your new found energy to get to know anything from Europe’s biggest gorge to the delights of Chania.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Chania International Airport ("Ioannis Daskalogiannis") (CHQ) or Heraklion International Airport (HER). Most people arrive by air to Crete into Heraklion airport (HER) or Chania airport (CHQ). They are both equal distances from the retreat and the transfer is about 1 hour 45 minutes. There are also daily ferries from the Greek mainland to Crete. See our flights and ferries section.

Yoga Rocks Crete arranges all transfers from either airport. The taxi is 115 EUR from Heraklion, 120 EUR from Chania and you can see their lovely taxi driver opposite. Car hire for the week is normally the cheaper option. Yoga Rocks Crete will help group you with other guests to share the transfer cost. They are there to help you every step of the way.
