7 Days Wholesome Food & Yoga Surfing Retreat in Panama

  • Eco Venao Boutique Resort, Carretera Principal, Playa Venao, Pedasi 0000, Panama

Overview

Yoga Retreat Panama

When Katherine and Sofi moved to Panama around six years ago, they completely fell in love with Venao. There was something about this simplicity they really wanted to learn that the city never gave them. Not much time has passed when they learned about the love of home cooking, home reading, long walks on the beach, and splurging some days on few beers out in the local bar. They engaged in new activities, one of them is learning to surf. The fun part of all is that they still dont know how to surf, and maybe they never will, but also to accept that is part of a big lesson surfing has on them. There is a lot of surrendering to do with nature and the waves of the ocean, and that is mirror to their own life.

Yoga and surfing

Pema Chodron once told Katherine that Life always come and hit us like a big wave, but the magic started right there when you can watch the sky from above, all full of sand up to your ears and eyes, and still be able to come back up. Surely, with a great laugh. There is so much relation between surfing and yoga, and they both complement each other. Surfing gives you back that playfulness that you sometime as yogis lose in the way to perfect your asanas. Yoga gives the flowy surf some balance and together they make a great lover.

The retreat

This retreat is not about becoming a professional surfer or yogi. It is not about riding the biggest wave or achieving a strenuous head stand, but it is about your flow through life and also about how much fun you are having in the process. Come and join Katherine to remind yourself to have some time and space dedicated only to yourself and to your inner child, wild and playful side of you. Come to play, get nurtured, and smile!

The Eco Lodge is the focal point of the Eco Venao project. It encompasses the surfers hostel, the beautiful cabanas, and their very own campsite. Both exquisite and rustic, they maintain the Eco Lodge with great love and care - as do their fantastic guests!

The Eco Lodge is only a few minutes walk from the Playa Venao, but far enough to get the sand off your feet. Before you know it, you are likely to find yourself eating with perfect strangers in the Lodges spacious communal kitchen - this is exactly the sense of community that continues to inspire people at Eco Venao. Keep it up! You can opt to stay at dormitory and shared room, couple up at double room, or if you the type who enjoys some silence, you can stay at one of the private rooms. Its completely up to you!

This is a leisure trip, which means you will enjoy the grandeur of your lifes flow mixing nature with yoga and delicious Californian inspired vegan food mixed with the local Panamanian ingredients and elements. Chef Erins Moens will be preparing nourishing meals every day and take you to unimaginable places, while Katherine will awaken your inner self with 2 yoga classes a day. Guest teacher Brian Matzke all the way from New Mexico will be assisting your yoga classes, bringing all his knowledge from trainings in California with Bhakti immersions and Vinyasa flowiness. You will be using different techniques of yoga and meditations, and the cherry on top is you will be surfing with a professional team of Billabong in the area!

Katherine Croston

Katherine plays as a certified yoga instructor and holistic health coach, based on the foundation We are all here to find happiness, and that we all deserve to be happy as well as Make mistakes, and grow from them. She has been trained as a Vini yoga instructor in Panama and followed different Vinyasa trainings in California with the Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in San Francisco, as well as in Chile, Argentina, and was certified in Febuary 2015 by Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa as a Kundalini yoga instructor in India.

Creative and co-owner of the Art of Joy Yoga Retreats which is also based in Panama, Katherine finds most of her joy in leading yoga classes, yoga retreats in the interior of the country, cooking and hanging out with family and friends (probably cooking for them too!).

Brian Matzke

Brian began his yoga journey at a very young age with Siddha yoga. Having a background in college athletics and being educated in the health field, he brings a well rounded knowledge to his practice and teaching. He started his asana practice with Bikram yoga and then evolved to the Barkan method. Being a native of New Orleans but spending the majority of his time in New Mexico, Brians classes are infused with so much love. He says his heart is touched by all styles of yoga so he wants to share his heart with his students.

His first teaching experience began in Puerto Rico and his education has been influenced by Jimmy Barkan, Pradeep Teotia, Sean Corn, Johnny Kest, and Rolf Gates, and many more. As Brian always says our teachers are everywhere, Brian travels to teacher trainings and workshops worldwide with a never-ending thirst for knowledge to share with his students. Students say after a class with Brian, they walk out with this feeling of deep spiritual connection. His classes will invigorate you with his Yang energy and ground you with his Yin flow. He works as a fire fighter and spends a great deal of time traveling the world and practicing his yoga off the mat.

The great thing about Panama is that its so small and safe that you can lose yourself around it and always be okay. Panama has one of the most amazing bio-diversities and ecosystems in the world. And for being so small and narrow, Panamanian has had privilege to be the umbilical cord of the Americas with the Panama canal for many years causing the population to be very internationally known and the economy to be one of the most steady economies in the Americas.

Playa Venao

Venao, besides being one of the best spots to learn how to surf is also one of the most beautiful places on earth. The beach counts with 3 kilometers in distance but it also has a lot of bio diversity around its beaches. You can find the most amazing jungles, monkeys and wild animals around it. Many foreigners decided to move to Playa Venao some years ago, so you might find that the locals are a mix varieties of Panamanian, European, and the new Americans that started to move slowly into the area.

You are promised a very nourishing, vegetarian, and delicious menu. Only local and natural resources will be used to provide a whole variety of recipes that you will sure to enjoy. It is fine to add some animal protein to the menu, but please do it with consciousness of some people around who might care about this.

The whole idea is to become whole. Nature creates the source, and Chef Erins will accommodate the meals for you with lots of love and consciousness to promote your entire weeks progress or maybe even your whole life. There has been many stories from people who have eaten the mindful food and making strong decisions to change some old patterns and habits that dont make sense anymore, but all is left to say is do it with love because all you need is love, eat, pray, and eat with love!

People make rituals around food, so youd most probably find everyone sharing a common table with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Feel free to bring along wine, beers, or anything that you would like to share with your other mates.

Venao and the area have a lot to offer besides yoga and surfing. August and November are very green months in which you can take off to do trails or waterfalls, visit the nearby island of iguana that seems like a little piece of the Caribbean inside the Pacific coast line, or go visit the new zip line and take in some more adventure! It is highly recommended to take some time to visit the country and the favorite spots around it, like The San Blas islands, Bocas del Toro, Boquette, and The Chiriqui region, Panama city, and Santa Catalina for even more surfing!

Thanks Katherine, you were an amazing host, chef, teacher and many things more, Gracias, Gracias, Gracias."

"The ERES Retreat at Azul Paradise on Bastimentos Island with Katherine Croston and Erin Moens was exceptional! I could not have asked for a better experience. The setting at Azul Paradise is truly a gem and makes for a great atmosphere for relaxation and inspiration. Katherine is a fabulous teacher who is able to guide you to a comfortable space that connects your heart with nature. Her daily practices are just the right amount of depth and cleansing. Erin, is no doubt an incredible chef offering some of the most unique delicious local food I have ever tasted. With amazing massages, facials, and island tours the whole experience was healing and unforgettable. I highly recommend this retreat to anyone looking for a long lasting memory of yoga in a paradise setting. I could live this way! Much love girls."

"It has been a busy week getting back to reality here in New Mexico! I'm barely getting caught up on e-mails. Just wanted to take a second to tell all of you to thank you! It was an amazing week! What a beautiful surprise to have started the journey with complete strangers (except for my dear friend Brian, of course), and at the end of it, feeling like each of you was a part of my family.I had beautiful moments with each of you, that I won't ever forget. There were moments during the week, with the sights and sounds of the ocean and the jungle that were so overwhelming, I felt as if my heart would burst! Driving back to the city was such a bittersweet experience, as we all were singing along to Natalie's playlist, I reflected with tears in my eyes as I said 'hasta luego' to the beach. I can feel everything that we worked on manifesting in my daily life. Trying to take a moment to really listen to everyone that comes into my office, and at the very least look every person in the eyes and not try to just hurry on to the next thing. Kathy, Grace and Brian, you are each beautiful rays of sunshine! I wish you love and success as you go on to share your practices. I have been raving to everyone that will listen about this experience and I hope to send more student your way!!I really believe that slowing down and really taking the time to understand each other could be the key to healing the world, one heart at a time. Know that each one of you has a home, if you ever come to visit New Mexico!"

"I do yoga retreats yearly and even lived in an ashram for 2 months, so I'm very familiar with the benefits of these kinds of getaways. This year was different for me because I was introducing my boyfriend, to this whole experience and I was really hoping that he would embrace the whole thing whiteout feeling like it was a foreign world. I have to say that from the moment we walked in we felt welcomed, like a family. The food Kathy would prepare was wholesome and as good or even better than the food your Abuelita would make you. The love was the #1 ingredient. The Yoga was uplifting and sensorial, with music and aromas that would stay with you beyond your practice. The inner spiritual work was beyond the physicality of the practice. This was one of the most rejuvenating experiences for both of us, he got sold on the whole yoga retreat and wants to make this an annual experience.I could not agree more and feel that I will always owe you Kathy the gift of wanting to spend more time in the kitchen cooking with love, uplifting vegetarian foods for my friends, and family. You were so beautiful to see!"

"Beautiful words from two very beautiful people. Thanks to all of you for helping make this retreat so special for Vanesa and I. We experienced friendship, mutual respect, and love from all of you, and we are so grateful. As a result of this time together, Vanesa and I have grown closer together, and our spiritual path has aligned even further. This trip helped shape our love for each other exponentially. Thanks to breakthroughs we each shared with one another, we have fallen deeper in love, and words cannot effectively share my sentiment when I say - Thank you to all for helping make this happen. I hope to see you again, but until then, be good and take care of yourselves"

"I and my husband have had the great pleasure of participating now in several of the yoga and surf retreats with Katherine and Brian. The energy, light, love, nurturing and transformation that happens during these beautiful retreats is profound and I feel renewed and refreshed at a deep level every time I leave. I also see this happening for each participant that commits to the retreat, they leave feeling expanded, nourished and alive. It is not only a fun adventure with amazing people in a tropical beach paradise it is also a very safe and healing space that Kathy and Brian create for people to open up, allow their vulnerability and to be themselves. It really is a space of unconditional love, this comes through the food by the amazing and sweetie pie organic chef Erin, the powerful yoga classes, the workshops and the yummy hugs. Book in, you won't regret it, it will change your life. Personally, I can't wait for the next one!"

"I had the best yoga experience in Panama with Anna Karina and Katherine. They are great teachers, full of love, and eager to share their knowledge and practice. The detox part was a bit challenging at the beginning if you never did it in your life, but after three days, it felt natural and easy. At the end, I felt very strong mentally and physically. I highly recommend it. As far as the place is concerned, El Valle de Anton, it was magical. Being surrounded by mounts and forests is perfect for meditating and recharging one's batteries.I will renew this yoga retreat experience."
