The food prepared and served is tasty and wholesome vegetarian and vegan food. They use vegetables from their own organic garden and then locally sourced fruit and vegetables. They spend a lot of time and care preparing the food for the guests, and they get really great feedback. The food served is approximately 80 percent vegan, and 30-40 percent raw.

Breakfast is self-service with seasonal fruits, a selection of cereals and toasted sourdough and local corn bread, accompanied by homemade jam or marmalade. A selection of tea (green, black and herbal) and coffee is available throughout the day.

Lunches are fresh garden salads, grain salads, falafel or Spanish omellete. Usually served with a variety of raw dips, nut pates, or hummus.

Evening meals include a variety of curries with biryani rice or coconut rice, vegetable noodles with stir-fried tofu and vegetables, moussaka and salad, spiced potatoes with honey aubergine and couscous. The resort is also growing goats, which enables them to produce their own cheese.

Local walks

The property is surrounded by woods, with many tracks and beautiful old abandoned houses and buildings. It is also close to the reservoir, and the village. There are many forest tracks to explore and spend time walking in the woods.

There is a selection of local therapists available to provide treatments for our guests, depending on the retreat week. Often the yoga teachers offer various treatments. Jo Tison offers Reiki and Thai massage. Blanche Mulholland offers Shiatsu. "Staying one week there doing yoga opened my heart. I connected with so many beautiful people in a magical place. The food was heaven and there was enough space to chill and relax. And the hot tub!!!!! I was going swimming to the lake which was the perfect way to start the day. Host Fiona is super friendly, calm and well organised. I admire her work having family and living a simple life in nature. I am thankful for being there. I loved it. "

"I had never done yoga before and went with a friend to the yurt retreat. I found that it was well organised and communication was clear for booking. The yoga teaching was for all levels so I felt at ease in every class and saw progression within the week. The setting is beautiful, so peaceful, (take paints, sketch book and books!) the afternoons in the sun were lovely reading and chilling out. The facilities were clean and it was nice to help yourself to a brew or fruit at anytime, we even slept in the hammocks one night with a cuppa! Being a teacher it was the best relaxation holiday ever, I felt de-stressed by the end of it and would highly recommend it! If you have time pop to Lisbon for a few days beforehand like we did, it felt like two holidays-a city break and chill out time."

"Great experience to stay in the family run retreat for two weeks trying the most amazing veggie dishes and practicing yoga every day. The people I met were wonderful, all looking for a different holiday experience away from the business of the city to relax, unwind and calm the mind in the closeness of nature. It was such a beautiful location with a lake surrounded by forest nearby made it so special. I found the size of the retreat perfect with 8 people and our friendly hosts we could socialise but also find time and space for ourselves. Hope to come back and get in the hot tub again!!!"

The place is settled in nature with a stunning lake nearby that is perfect for morning swims. In the afternoon there is time just to relax and let the learnings and impressions of the day sink in. It's the perfect opportunity to treat yourself, step away from everyday life and just melt into this atmosphere of joy and peace."

"So much more than a regular yoga retreat, this place offers a unique chance to delve into the natural elements and experience a new way of living. Hidden away in a quiet valley, we were delighted to stay with Fiona and her wonderful family as we relaxed, explored the beautiful spaces in and around the property, and went deeper into our yoga practice twice a day. The yurt accommodation and food were AMAZING - we really felt so nourished and well looked after the entire time. We could not recommend this enough - we will definitely be back next year!!"

"Thank you so much for the perfect retreat for my mum, sister and I! You and your family made us feel very welcome. We loved staying in the comfortable Yurts, being close to nature, living sustainably, eating tasty foods from the garden and using natural local handmade soaps. The variety of vegetarian food was amazing and we enjoyed chatting with our fellow yogis over meal times. The yoga and meditation sessions varied throughout the week and offered challenge and serenity which enabled us to go deeper in to our yoga practice. It was fun to walk down to the lake for a swim and explore the local village. I enjoyed reading the wide range of books available in the hammocks in the shade and sun and the opportunity to unwind with massages. It was a real treat to go in the hot tub and have local Portuguese wine with a fire on the last night. I will recommend this special experience to everyone! "

  • Review by Noeline Oldham from Algarve, Portugal

"On first sight as I approached the retreat- the space seemed really spread out! Then moving closer -I saw how everything was interconnected- the Yurts , the kitchen and toilets in each space- the grand wooden table that brought us all together at meal times , as we got passionate about how good the vegetarian food was- always giving a creative flare to each meal time! And for me this was a massive thing as I'm gluten and lactose free- but Fiona always gave an alternative to the gluten and lactose meals! The yoga deck and yoga was brilliantly placed to warm up the body in the morning! And the pleasant short walk -to and from the deck ensured a contemplation before and after yoga! The walk down to the reservoir allowed an interconnection with the other girls , along with stunning views and beautiful tranquil water great for swimming in! The last night was a chance to group together around the fire and share our week and lives! Loved every minute of the whole retreat- an escape back to nature - a chance to re- connect back to the self!"

"I can't thank Fiona and Nuno enough for their welcoming and inspirational way of life. The resort was truly back to nature, peaceful and tranquil. Accommodation was comfortable with all needs met. The food was delicious and varied, and plentiful, I didn't miss meat at all. The scenery was breathtaking, either the walk to the lake for swimming or to the village on the hill, looking over the Portuguese landscape. If you wanted to take time out to read there was a variety of books on offer and hammocks to lie in the shade, relaxing with the sounds of nature. Fiona's yoga sessions were so relaxing, but energising at the same time. Her voice melts you into another time and space. The last night came too soon, but again Fiona and Nuno made it special in a unique way, bathing in a hot tub in front of a bonfire underneath a clear starry sky. This was a special family holiday for me and my two oldest daughters. I was the oldest person at the retreat but age didn't matter, I felt so at home and welcome. I would love to take my fellow yogis to this retreat in the future, without hesitation. Thank you so much Fiona and Nuno for allowing us to share in your lifestyle. I feel very privileged."

"Thank you so much for the wonderful retreat. I feel inspired and reenergized after a week full of yoga and meditation, yummy food and amazing people. It was a good balance between yoga and free time. There was enough time to relax, to get inspired by the many yoga books available and to have a hike to and a swim in the reservoir. I loved the yoga and meditation classes, my body is stronger, softer and my mind more clear and calm then before. Fiona and Nuno are amazing hosts, taking care of the group and involve you into their ecological way of living. This was exactly what I was looking for. The hot tube at the last evening was a great experience. Singing songs around the campfire enjoying a glass of local wine made this evening even more memorable. "A wonderfully relaxing week in the depths of beautiful central Portugal. What a perfect location for getting away from it all and feeling truly close to nature in such a peaceful and secluded place. Waking up in the peace of our yurt, going straight to uplifting and inspiring yoga on the outdoor decking area, followed by a delicious breakfast and then a day of unwinding in a hammock, exploring the local countryside, reading in the shade, swimming in the reservoir, more yoga and meditation, and of course eating yet more nutritious and tasty food... I couldn't have hoped for more. Fiona was a sunny, patient, calm and inspiring teacher who was in tune with each one of us and managed to ensure that each person in our class (which consisted of various different levels of yoga experience) enjoyed and took a lot away from our week of practice. I left feeling refreshed, relaxed and revitalised. I would recommend this week to anyone."

"What a fantastic retreat! As an experienced yogi, I thought the quality of the yoga classes was very high, the yoga teacher (Fiona Macleod) had so much knowledge and understanding of the practice that really came through in such a clear but gentle, understanding and loving way that I have no doubt that everyone would enjoy and benefit from her classes, whether a beginner or more advanced student. Not only was the food absolutely delicious with fresh, wholesome meals and ingredients straight from the garden, the surroundings offer a tranquil and beautiful place to really rest, ponder and relax. The facilities were perfect. Staying in one of the amazing yurts really allows you to connect with nature and gives you a sense of feeling at one with yourself and your surroundings, it was so nice being away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It was such a treat having a dip in the hot tub under the stars and was a wonderful way to end the week. "I followed a 1-week retreat with Fiona. I was happily surprised that it was more challenging than expected (but I wasn't trained and I'm definitely not a morning person). I find her to be a very well balanced professional, delivering organized classes and caring for our specific daily issues. Plus, general atmosphere and environment were excellent. A few weeks later, my mind on body is still infused with positive effects.", edited

"Let me start by saying that this little piece of the earth is paradise. The native flowers, olive trees, and fresh clean air are just the beginning. No traffic noise just the sounds of Mother Nature. I really needed this escape and felt so at home away from home. I cannot recommend this retreat enough. The food was fresh, yummy and mostly from the garden, the yoga was so good and the company was stimulating. If I wanted to escape from others it was easy in my yummy comfortable and cute yurt. (I miss my yurt!) Just a little walk to the most enchanting village. Fiona and team are lovely and the children there are divine. I am on a much needed high from being there. Grrr back to the grind... I hope to come again soon for some more soul indulgence. Thank you guys!" website, edited

" This retreat was in a beautiful and unique setting, with delicious food and friendly hosts, including the kids (human and goats). The yoga was enriching, was adapted to suit each students individual needs (e.g., pregnancy) and Fiona and Nuno made a special effort to make sure everything ran smoothly. The yurt and facilities were basic, as promised, but perfectly comfortable. Shame the sun didn't come out for long, but I'm told that's very unusual! I would highly recommend this retreat, particularly if atmosphere matters more to you than creature comforts. ", edited

" Yoga Holidays Portugal was the perfect retreat and it was exactly what I was looking for - a beautiful setting, relaxed atmosphere, excellent yoga classes and very tasty food. The outdoor yoga deck is wonderful to practice on morning or evening. And, with such a stunning view, it definitely made a difference to practising indoors. Jo is a brilliant yoga teacher - I felt she included a good mix of techniques suitable for beginners or advanced students and made every class really enjoyable. I also found Fiona's workshops really useful as they were yoga related - I picked up a lot of tips I will be using at home. The food was absolutely delicious, very nutritious, and full of flavour. I am usually quite a picky eater and do not eat too much vegetarian food. However, I found myself wanting more of every dish. I was also impressed that every meal was different throughout the week and loved the fact that the food is picked fresh from the valley. I have never stayed in a yurt before but found them surprisingly spacious and very comfortable - sleeping in such a lovely interior whilst hearing the natural sounds from outside made the experience even more magical. The options of afternoon excursions were also very good - this provided a great way to see more of the local area and beautiful scenery. I felt the week included an ideal balance of yoga and free time. I especially liked that the structure was fairly relaxed - allowing guests to attend classes, visit local swimming spots, go for hill walks or have a massage whenever suited us. Fiona and Nuno were wonderful hosts and made everyone feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend this retreat and cannot wait to go back again. ", edited

"As meat eaters this was our first vegan/vegetarian experience and we were more than pleasantly surprised. The food has been both delicious and beautifully presented, and very filling. 10 out of 10 for the amazing food. The yoga with jo was both well taught and relaxing. Also the afternoon trips were great as Nuno has a great deal of local knowledge. We loved our yurt and views were glorious especially in the morning. It's been a joy to wake up here. See you next year."

"I want to thank Fiona and everyone else who made this such a wonderful vacation! I can truly say that I'm leaving much more relaxed and stress free than when I came. The yoga classes are great - Jo is a great teacher. Yoga in a studio is nothing compared to doing yoga on the outdoor deck. Fiona's cooking is great and the surroundings are beautiful. I could definitely come back again."
