The upstairs rooms a balcony, with large French doors to take advantage of the the stunning surrounding views. These rooms also have en suite facilities and air conditioning. They provide towels and water, and there are books, DVDs, CDs and WiFi. It is not like a hotel but more a traditional Turkish homestead.
Monday is arrival day, and a light dinner will be served at 7.00 p.m. The yoga detox retreat program will officially start on the Tuesday morning (the day after the arrival day) at 7.45 a.m. You will be on a liquid only diet from Tuesday through to after the Yoga class on the Sunday morning (5 whole days of juice-fasting detoxification).
A juice fast and colon cleanse is done primarily to cleanse, heal and strengthen the digestive system. A healthy digestive system is essential for over-all health. Once the digestive system has been optimized, the body is better able to absorb the nutrients it needs from a healthy diet, and to discard any toxins it doesn't need.
The detox cleanse is a liquid only fast - fruit and vegetable juices (organic as much as possible), vegetable broth, herbal teas and plenty of water. The exclusion of solids from the diet ensures a rest for the digestive system, and helps the body to flush itself out. Enemas can also be used to facilitate additional detoxing and cleansing of the bowel and colon.
The natural setting of a retreat encourages your senses to take a break from the bombardment of sensory information which is so often the case in today's fast pace living. Once the senses slow down, the mind slows down, life slows down, and you remember who you are!
On a juice fasting detox, your sense of taste is automatically 'limited' to pure, organic juices and broth. This slowing down of the sense of taste really enhances your taste buds, and once you start eating again, even a simple lettuce leaf tastes amazing!
The detox process naturally enhances your other senses too, but the beauty of detoxing in a retreat setting is that your sense of smell, sight, hearing and touch also get the opportunity to rest - on our yoga detox retreat you hear bird-song and the meditative sound of cicadas, you smell pine trees and wild herbs, you see the ocean and the sky, and you feel the warmth of the sun and the gentleness of the ocean breeze.
Meditation and detox go hand in hand. We meditate twice a day on yoga detox retreats' retreats and holidays, morning and evening.
The practice of meditation can help the detox process. If the mind is busy or rebelling, or if emotions are surfacing, meditation can bring stillness and peace. Likewise, detoxing can help meditation. Often during the detox the body and mind naturally slow down; there is less external stimulation through the senses for the mind to busy itself with, and so it is often easier to sit still and meditate.
During the retreat, we will practice Hatha Yoga. The practices of Hatha Yoga can help you break down the barriers that you have built and lead you to an experience of the inner connectedness of all of existence. Our limited perception that we are separate from others then expands into a deeper understanding and knowing; the barriers soften and like magic, Yoga leads to a shift in our perception of reality.
It is Lauren's hope that, in a retreat setting, through the practices of yoga and meditation and through the process of detoxification, others may feel a deep sense of belonging and enter a space of wholeness. Prior to her entry into the world of yoga, therapies, and detox, Lauren worked in the fields of psychology and education for special needs. She is an on-going student of nutrition, yoga, Ayurveda, and in the spiritual tradition of Advaita Vedanta (non-dual yoga philosophy), as well as in the Buddhist meditation technique of Vipassana.
The yoga detox retreat is held at a purpose built yoga retreat centre in Dalyan, south-west Turkey. Spectrum is not a hotel, it is the home of hosts Joanne and Tom. It is an intimate environment and exclusive for each group. Its simplicity communicates peace and serenity, which is in line with the yoga life-style of simple-living, high thinking.
In between yoga classes and juices, you can choose to explore the sites of Dalyan, rest by the pool or enjoy the nearby 7 km golden sand beach. You don't have to rush anywhere, so if you prefer, simply enjoy the beauty of Spectrum with the pool, luxurious sun loungers and treatments on offer.
There are river boat rides, mud baths and hot springs to explore too. Dalyan is a truly fabulous location. It is a conservation area due to the turtles nesting on the beach.
The yoga juice fasting detox retreat includes a trip to a local hamam (Turkish bath house), where the skin is thoroughly cleansed with a steam, exfoliation and scrub, and this is followed by a relaxing oil massage.
Not only is this excursion an enjoyable and relaxing self-indulgence and a helpful addition to the detox process, it is also a glimpse into the culture of Turkey. Turkish baths / hamams were an integral part of the Ottoman culture (and therefore Turkish culture) for centuries. Although the idea was possibly borrowed from the Greeks and Romans, the Ottomans transformed them from places simply for washing to an indispensable part of daily social life.
The skin is the largest organ in the body and because it is one of the eliminating organs, the hamam steam and scrub help it to effectively eliminate toxins.
The steam room causes the body to perspire and thus flush out toxins.
The exfoliation helps the lymph system clean itself of toxins that collect in the lymph glands.
Circulation is improved and the pores of the skin are opened, encouraging the body to discharge toxins, resulting in an increased ability to combat bacteria, plus helping the skin to look and feel healthier and more resilient.
