Our bodies naturally detoxify everyday as part of a normal body process. Detoxification is one of the bodys most basic automatic functions of eliminating and neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph, and skin.

Unfortunately in this day and age, with the high levels of pollution found in the air, water and food we eat, our bodies have a hard time keeping up. The modern day, western diet with too much animal protein, too much saturated and trans-fats, too much caffeine and alcohol radically alters our internal ecosystem.

Body systems and organs that were once capable of naturally cleaning out unwanted substances are now completely over-loaded to the point where toxic material remains inside our tissues. Our bodies try to protect us from dangerous substances by isolating and surrounding them with mucous and fat so that they will not cause an imbalance or trigger an immune response (some people carry up to 15 extra pounds of mucous that harbors this waste).

Detoxification through special cleansing diets and enemas is the best way to assist your bodys natural self-cleaning system. It is especially important for immune-compromised diseases like cancer, arthritis, diabetes and chronic fatigue. However, even if your diet is good, a spring cleanse can revitalize your system and rid your body of harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Yoga Detox retreats' juice fasting retreats are a thorough cleanse and detox for the entire digestive tract. Psyllium and clay shakes are used together with herbal colonic cleansers to clean the digestive tract from the top, down and self-administered enemas to clean from down, up.

On this yoga detox program you will generally use a coffee enema in the morning which are great for detoxing the liver, and a herbal enema in the evening which is more nourishing for the colon. Sometimes you can use lemon water, barley grass or wheatgrass solution too.

Enemas are generally much gentler on the body than colonic irrigation - less water is used and the only force involved is gravity. In my opinion, colonic irrigation shouldn't be carried out more than once every six months, due to the force and volume of water involved. Enemas, on the other hand, can be done twice a day on a detox program.

The devices sometimes used to include clysmatics and colema boards, which are simply variations of the simple enema. They do exactly the same job as an enema. Enemas help remove the accumulations of putrefied faeces and mucoid plaque which may line the walls of the large intestine. These accumulations can harbor parasites or pathogenic gut flora, causing nonspecific symptoms and general ill-health. It is not that uncommon for someone to find a marble or other such object that they swallowed as a child, come out with the mucoid plaque on a detox program.

Enemas and colonic cleansing are not new theories or practices but date back to medical beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks and even further back - 5000 years, to the ancient rishis and yogis of India who practised 'Vasti Kriya'. They would sit in a water tub or a river or in a tank and suck the water into the stomach through the anus, sometimes using a small bamboo stick as the tube, or no tube at all - simply muscle control, breathing techniques and willpower. Using the modern day enema is much easier, but it's the same principle.

You will meditate twice a day on this yoga detox retreat - morning and evening.

The practice of meditation can help the detox process. If the mind is busy or rebelling, or if emotions are surfacing, meditation can bring stillness and peace. Likewise, detoxifying can help meditation. Often during detox, the body and mind naturally slow down; there is less external stimulation through the senses for the mind to busy itself with, and so it is often easier to sit still and meditate.

What is meditation?

Meditation is an experience that cannot be described, just as colors cannot be described to a blind man, or the taste of an apple cannot be described to one who has never tasted an apple.

Not only can meditation not be described, it cannot be taught. You cannot teach a blind man to see colors, or someone to taste an apple. It has to be experienced to be known.

It is possible however, to suggest some steps that could possibly lead one to the experience. It is the same as trying to teach someone to sleep. Sleep happens on its own, but by turning down the lights, by lying down on a comfortable bed with a warm cover, you encourage the likelihood of the experience of sleep.

During a detox, the mind slows down - there is less stimulation, and you enter a more peaceful place within. The body becomes lighter - moving away from its gross earthly quality to a more subtle, higher vibratory level. You thus begin to move away from our ordinary every day experiences, and are more likely to transcend time, space, and causation. This is an ideal time for meditation. In the meditative state there is neither past nor future, but only the consciousness of "I am" in the eternal now. It is only possible when all mental modifications and activity are stilled.

Even just half an hour of meditation daily enables you to face life with peace and spiritual strength. It feels as if a magical, divine energy flows through you during meditation, exerting a benign influence on the mind, nerves, sense organs, and body. It opens the door to intuitive knowledge and realms of eternal bliss.

The practice of yoga is a chore element to the retreat experience. Whether you are new to yoga, have some experience, or have been practicing for years, whether your motivation is fun, fitness, weightloss, increased flexibility, peace of mind , stress relief, an experience of peace and bliss, spiritual enlightenment; whether your body is young, old, fit, tired, slim, or overweight, you are welcomed to do yoga. During this retreat, yoga is taught in such a way that everyone can benefit from the practice.

Yoga is a magical tool to bring quality into living; inviting you to pause along the linear existence you are traveling from A to B - which feeds into the illusion that there is somewhere to go, somewhere to reach; inviting you, instead, to step inside. A regular yoga practice often makes you feel more positive, more alive, happier, more confident with perhaps a kinder disposition to your fellow beings. A regular yoga practice tends to draw you inwards - into a space where the striving, the trying, the reaching for disappears, and all that remains is being.
