Rarotonga is by far the most populated of the Cook Islands and its township of Avarua is the capital. Located in the southern group of islands, it is known just as Raro locally.
Aitutaki, meanwhile is an island in the Southern Cook Islands a 45-minute flight from the capital island of Rarotonga. It is a frequent nominee for any Most Beautiful Island in the Pacific award. Its a combination of high island and atoll and has a huge turquoise lagoon surrounded by tiny, picture-perfect islets. If Rarotonga is the Tahiti of the Cooks, then Aitutaki is the Bora Bora.
Aitutaki lagoon and its islands are breathtakingly beautiful. The classic picture postcard of small palm tree fringed tropical island, with shallow, warm turquoise waters, corals, tropical fish and blue skies is taken here. The lagoon is large, taking about an hour in a boat to cross it. Tourism facilities are well developed, but are still low-key enough not to intrude on the nature of the island.
