Awaken slowly to the sound of the ocean lapping the shore. Start the day conversing with new friends over a vibrant gourmet breakfast served with warm, tropical breezes. We will surf in the mornings from 9:30 to 12:30. Before we take to the water, we’ll do our morning yoga practice and awaken the senses, gently stretching our arms, back, and shoulders. Around 4:00 p.m., we will do our afternoon yoga session designed to support our bodies’ surfing endeavors or relax on one of the many hammocks on the beach. Evenings are filled with friendship and laughter, whether we’re kicking back beachside, enjoying a bonfire, or taking dance lessons.
Practice, breathe, and sweat in one of Costa Rica’s newest and most inspiring studios. Our spacious yoga shala is open on three sides to allow the sea breeze and ocean song to flow thru. Built with beautiful teak floors, high bamboo ceilings, and antique Javanese doors, this sacred space is unforgettable and fully equipped. Nancy Goodfellow, our yoga instructor, offers daily yoga classes including soft flow, vinyasa flow with hip and shoulder openers. This focus will improve your flexibility and strength as well as your surfing.
Balance, focus, and core strength are key components of surfing. We will begin most mornings with awakening yoga to get ourselves ready for the day. We have several sunset yoga sessions planned as well. Nancy knows which poses most benefit sore surf muscles and incorporates awareness of the body into each session. She can help you reduce tightness in the hips and shoulders as well as improve strength and flexibility. Vinyasa yoga classes are designed to nourish the body, release tension, and allow you to connect with yourself.
We’ll surf every day! It’s Costa Rica, one of the premier surf destinations in the world, so it will be incredible! A short walk down the white sand beach is our gentle surf spot. This picturesque palm-lined beach is Playa Hermosa, ‘beautiful beach’ in Spanish. A short walk down the white sand beach is our gentle surf spot. This picturesque palm-lined beach is Playa Hermosa, ‘beautiful beach’ in Spanish. We provide safe, fun, and informative surf instruction. We teach safety first with fun and stoke as a close second. A low student-to-instructor ratio (2 to 1) will ensure that you receive thoughtful feedback and coaching. You will even have a one-on-one session mid-week plus a big bonus video analysis.
Our “home break" is perfect for learning with its sandy bottom and rolling waves. The area has some of the most consistent waves in Costa Rica. This does not mean gigantic. In fact, we selected this location for its favorable waves. Having said this, while Colleen has performed some amazing feats, even she cannot control the seas, so we are still subject to the tides and swells.
Women’s Quest is different than other surf retreats. Our first day will begin with "ground school" which is where we will teach you the basics of surfing, how to pop up and how to balance on the board. We have also created a very special “paddle school”, which will take place outside of Pranamar. It is a quiet beach with very gentle, rolling waves. We will teach techniques to paddle more efficiently and powerfully, how to turtle roll, how to spin around quickly (for catching waves) and how to find your sweet spot on the board.
Our instructors have the following essentials to help you achieve your goals:
Pia came to Costa Rica over 11 years ago. She was looking for peace and quiet and she’s definitely found it here in Santa Teresa. After living in Buenos Aires, Argentina all her life she was seeking to live in nature and in a small community. She started to surf here and couldn’t stop doing it and now along with yoga it’s a very important part of her daily life.
Pia is also a Spanish teacher and a Reiki and Bach flower’s practitioner. She loves to be a surf instructor as she wants every body to have the chance to experience the joy of playing with the waves. She’s a huge animal lover and loves cooking healthy yummy nourishing meals. And this will give you a good idea of who is Pia: one of her favorite quotes is “ You don’t have a soul, you are a soul , you have a body” from CS Lewis.
Erick was born and raised in Costa Rica. He started surfing when he was 16 years old, what he likes most of teaching surfing is meeting new people, sharing time in the ocean with them and seeing the positive effect it has on them, and also the smile in their faces after they get their fist rides. Erick has been living in this area for 7 years. Before that he lived in the Osa Penisula for another 7 years.
Erick's two passions in life are traveling and surfing. He got his travel bug when hetraveled to Mexico when he was 15 years old. After that all he could think was to work and save money to see the world. Erick has been surfing in Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Canary Islands, Spain, Nicaragua and Panama. Erick loves the beauty of the Santa Teresa area, the incredible beaches and friendly people and especially the great weather that allows him to wear shorts year round!

She has won the Costa Rican National Women’s Championship and other competitions. Anna has years of experience teaching, having taught in California, England, Holland and Costa Rica. She has a love for being in the ocean and sharing surfing with others. "My favorite thing about teaching, is watching someone ride their first wave. The un-removable smile, joy, excitement, and freedom they feel reminds me why I started surfing." Anna loves Costa Rica, its friendly people, and feels so blessed to be able to spend time here.
What I love about surfing? I love that surfing has brought me around the world, it has introduced me to amazing cultures, and inspiring people. I love that I can do it alone or I can go with a group of friends. I love surfing because you are always being challenged. I love surfing because when I'm traveling, I always feel at home in the water. What do I love about Costa Rica? I love the warmth of the country, from its people to the warm ocean water.
Nancy Goodfellow began her Yogic studies in the Ashtanga tradition under the guidance of her first teachers, Dominic Corigliano, Tim Miller, and Sri Pattabhi Jois. At a young age she felt drawn to go inwards to gain insight into life's great mysteries. For two years she practiced and studied daily with great discipline and devotion alongside her teachers and mentors. Following her dream of living a more simple life in deep connection with nature, she moved to Costa Rica and developed a strong self-practice, while continuing to study abroad with many international teachers of various traditions.
Nancy has completed over 500 hours of Yoga Alliance Teacher trainings and began teaching in 1998. Yet it has been the challenge of overcoming one of life's greatest tragedies and losses that opened up the inner-door to her heart and has allowed Nancy to infuse and channel her teachings with great compassion, confidence and joy.
Nancy currently dedicates much of her studies to the Anusara method with its amazing principles of alignment, Tantric philosophy and Bhakti-filled practice. She completed over 500 hours of certified Anusara teachings and has "Anusara-Inspired" teacher status. Her teachings are infused with a myriad of elements, which come together to create a highly educational, physically challenging, and deeply soulful experience.
Nancy has been practicing Yoga for nearly 20 years and teaching for over 10 years. "I've just returned from a great trip with WQ to Vermont and I would definitely do this trip again! In fact, I've done trips with WQ to Hawaii and Costa Rica and they were all wonderful. The women are so fun and diverse and the trips have varied from relaxing (Hawaii) to challenging (surfing in CR and mountain biking and hiking in VT.) All activities are optional, so you can push yourself as hard as you'd like or take a slower road and still enjoy the ride both physically and mentally. The accommodations and food have been top-notch at each location, and the staff, led by Colleen Cannon are warm, welcoming and encouraging. WQ trips are perfect for solo travelers as well as for those traveling with friends."

"I have been on several women's quest trips..it is always the highlight of my year. Filled with adventures with incredible women. With busy schedules, it is hard to coordinate travel with friends and family, so a trip for just me always works, and from the first 15 minutes, you feel as if you have known these gals, and build forever friends. The adventures are geared to different levels, as a beginner in some activities, I learn proper techniques and practices - as an intermediate or advanced, able to have fun and be challenged. I think they have the most inspiring staff, and great taste with accommodations and food. I guess the only negative comment would be that although they recommend taking some down time, Its hard, I never want to miss any of the fun! I always return feeling very fulfilled, happy and ready to tackle life with a new perspective."

"Words can not do justice to how Women's Quest has changed my life. The experience gave me motivation and encouragement for me to find what my heart's desire was. Through the experiences and the people I met there, I was able to look inward and tap into my own courage, my own authenticity, and begin to slowly make changes to lead my best life. It's a continuous process, but one that remains grounded in my retreats with Colleen and company."
