This particular part of the module provides a foundation on classical yoga philosophy and practices including meditation, Asanas (postural training), Pranayamas (breathing techniques), and simple Kriyas (cleansing techniques).

People glibly speak about yoga without realizing that it forms an integral part of a composite Samkhya-yoga philosophy, the oldest philosophical system in the world. Samkhya provides the theoretical base without which one can neither understand the philosophy of Patanjali (the Yoga Sutras or Ashtanga yoga) nor derive full benefit of yoga by just practicing mechanically at the physical level.

It was stated in the Mahabharat: There is no wisdom like Samkhya, no power like yoga; and in the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells the warrior Arjuna: The ignorant differentiate between Samkhya and yoga, not the wise. He who sees the two as the same has the right understanding.

Therefore, anyone interested to understand yoga in its entirety should start by studying the Samkhya, metaphysics, and then proceed to learn the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. All techniques in yoga are meant to allow the practitioner to bring the philosophy to the practical level. If you dont know why you are practicing yoga, or if you dont have the right attitude towards the practice, youll be hardly practicing any real yoga.

Bhagavad Gita

In this part of the course, the student will be lead to dive deeper into traditional yoga as the Bhagavad Gita will be explained in the view of the four paths of yoga: namely, Raja yoga, Jnana yoga, Bhakti yoga, and Karma yoga as popularized by Swami Vivekananda.

The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most important books on yoga. It reveals the 4 main validly approaches/paths to the ultimate truth, because it contains the essence of the Upanishads. The Bhagavad Gita is also known as Gitopanishad and is written in dialogue format. The conversation between Krishna (the lord of yoga) and Arjuna the great pandava warrior in the imminence of a war. Lord Krishna advices Arjuna on what the right way would be for fulfilling his duties and destiny as a warrior (shatrya) and at the same time made it the path to ultimate wisdom and enlightenment.

The message of the Gita is a practical advice on how each one of us is living on this earth to fulfill a mission and we are to do it in a specific way with the right attitude of mind; for this is the means to spiritual evolvement. This is verily the path of Karma yoga. Following this path, one will gradually evolve to the highest state of yoga (Raja yoga), developing control over ones own mind, complete mastery over ones own personality, and eventually attaining the ultimate truth. Thats all about yoga.

The study of the Bhagavad Gita is also important to bring the complete understanding of yoga as a heritage of Indian culture and within the perspective of Vedanta. Thats because the text of the Gita is very syncretic, unifying the ideas presented in the Samkhya system and in the Vedanta system. It is therefore essential for the understanding of yoga as a holistic path for self-development.

Stefano Notarbartolo (Assitant yoga teacher and teacher training coordinator for Bali programs)

Has completed teacher training courses with The Yoga Institute of Santacruz in Mumbai, India and with Wise Living Yoga Academy besides others. He is a very active and well sought teacher in Jakarta where he teaches in several centers and international schools besides coordinating our yoga TTC in Bali, Indonesia.

Stefano Notarbartolo left Italy in 1998 to look for living traditions in the east. First, he moved to China, as he was attracted by the Taoist and Buddhist philosophies at the root of the martial arts he loved to practice, Wushu and Tai Ji Quan. He studied the Chinese language for 2 years in Beijing where he met his wife. He moved to her hometown, Jakarta, in 2000, where he started from scratch as a teacher of Italian language and librarian. He then got employed by an international freight forwarding company and he spent the following 8 years fulfilling his duty as a father of three, working in an office with responsibilities and related high stress and bad temper; as well as recurring back pain, migraines, and weight problems.

In 2007, the discovery of the deep truths in the Bhagavad Gita lead him to look for a teacher able to lead him on the yoga path, not just as a physical practice, but as a holistic lifestyle. He then went into two comprehensive yoga teacher training programs and attended several workshops in specialty areas in yoga such as Anatomy and Asanas in Indonesia and Singapore. He finally took the fundamental decision of deepening his learnings by going to the roots of yoga, at the birth place of the modern yoga renaissance, The Yoga Institute Santacruz in Mumbai, India. He attended a 3 month intensive and comprehensive yoga teacher training where, amongst his teachers, were Daniel Fonseca and Jeenal Mehta. Hes now teaching full time in Jakarta in 4 studios, at the Singapore International School and for few private students, including some corporates. Hes currently the Indonesian sole delegate for the World Yoga and Ayurveda Association. You can contact Stefano in Jakarta for any subjects related to our yoga teacher training course in Bali and for yoga programs for the corporate sector.

"I am so grateful for my experience at Wise Living Yoga Academy. I thought long and hard about if a 200 hour YTT was right for me--it was a deep thought process--I am not a traditional Yoga practitioner, I don't keep a regular practice, I'm overweight, not flexible, etc...etc..., but it was the very best thing I have done for myself. I learned so much and feel so good. I also have a great circle of friends that I met at WLYA and stay in contact with. The entire experience is unforgettable and life-changing in such amazing ways!"

  • Review by Verbena from Verbania, Italy

"The teacher training course organized by Jeenal and Daniel was one of the deepest experience of my life. The syllabus of the training is very complete and it allows the student to really understand the yoga philosophy, that is thousand years old, through the study of the main traditional scripture. I realized how much the modern perception of Yoga is wrong as only associated to physical exercise. It is actually a profound spiritual path with a very small physical component that anyway should as well being used to achieve the ultimate goal of Yoga: clarity of the mind and recognition of the nature of the true self.Wonderful experience that I will surely advice to anyone that really want to be completely absorbed in knowing the root of yoga and have concrete tools to educate and spread the knowledge to different group of people." website, edited

"This is a place dear to my heart, a truly unique and beautiful community that Jeenal and Daniel have created. I am back for my second time in one year, and it feels like home. When I came here for the first time in February, I had no idea what to expect. It changed my perception of yoga completely, changed my lifestyle, grounded me and opened my eyes to so many things. Jeenal and Daniel are two of the most inspirational and incredible people I have ever met. Their teacher training course was truly a course on life! I have eternal gratitude for these people and this place, and would wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone and everyone, regardless of whether you want to teach yoga. Do it for yourself. It's one of the best things you'll ever do. "

"I did my due diligence in regards to researching numerous teaching programs in Thailand and I can firmly say that I'm 100% sure that I made the right decision when choosing the Wise Living Yoga Academy as the program to undertake. I could not have asked for a more well-rounded, well-thought out program that takes into consideration all aspects of Yoga and what a beginner aspirant should begin to study. Not only was the course interesting and challenging, but it took care of my well-being as I studied my way through the days of work, in terms of physical health, nutrition, place to take rest, etc. This way, I could attend each class fully rested and engaged on the course at hand. Both instructors are so knowledgeable and fully committed to their teachings, and I'm confident in saying that they'll be people I will turn to in the future when I need advice or knowledge in regards to my own yoga practice/teachings.Although I still have much to learn on this life-journey with yoga, WLYA is an amazing place to start treading water and learning how to navigate one's path in both their personal and teaching plans with yoga. Namaste."

For someone who has experienced the Rajasic, Tamasic aspects of life and chose to become Sattvic is honourable. Jeenal has the spirit of a true teacher.
