Immerse yourselves in all that the Italian countryside has to offer. Enjoy daily morning yoga, workshops, writing prompts, and one on one sessions where you can write and nurture your creative selves. In this retreat, connect with your senses and transform your writing.
Over the last thirty years, a father and son team have transformed what used to be a working agricultural farm into a stunning holiday retreat, the kind of place that pulls you back. Travelers tend to return year after year, forever attached to the setting and the staff.
Rooms are spacious, comfortable, simple and some open out to stunning views of the countryside. Each room has air-conditioning, a desk for writing and its own ensuite bathroom. The Wi-Fi is patchy which allows for a true escape. Nonetheless, on a good day it can be found near the reception.
Daily morning yoga, workshops, writing prompts, one on one sessions. For six days and five nights you will be writing and nurturing your creative selves. Immersing yourselves in all that the Italian countryside has to offer, Wide Open Writing will make space and opportunity to break away from the routines that form ‘regular’ life, giving you the chance to connect with your senses and transform your writing.
As with all Wide Open Writing retreats, you don’t need to bring a fully thought out novel plot or an exact idea of what you want to be working on. You will be working with prompts designed to help you find your or a story.
And if you do have a project in mind you want to be working on, our daily writing and feedback sessions will give you the opportunity to enrich the components of your writing. In either case, you’ll be moving toward where the power and the passion of your writing is.
The late Italian summer days are long and warm and the schedule allows plenty of time for playing, hiking, exploring, finding some shade to hide out with a book and of course, writing. Nights are cool and September just so happens to be the season of shooting stars.
Nancy has been a practicing psychologist and psychotherapist for over thirty years (Ph.D, Columbia University, 1983), and she continues to study, practice, and teach at the growing edges of the field, particularly what Maslow called the “further reaches of human nature”. She’s studied mindfulness, body-mind integrative practices such as Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing, healing in trauma and recovery, bioenergetics, and EMDR. From her yoga practice of over twenty years and upwards of 5000 hours of practice, she felt called to take the training to become a teacher.
Trained as a therapist, Dulcie has been in private practice as a therapist in Maine for the past twenty-five years. Dulcie also started writing young; self-illustrated poems about snow monkeys and dead people. She teaches creative writing in Eindhoven, Netherlands with Watershed at their summer program, Camp Cushy. She completed a novel, Crooked Love, and is currently working on a professional memoir, Confessions of a Therapist. She believes sharing creative space gives power to the connections that fuel the creative process – giving life to something that wasn’t there before.
Tuscany is where it all began for Wide Open Writing. This family-owned farmhouse tucked away in the Tuscan hills is the location of the first retreat they ever hosted. And even though wonderful retreats in other countries have been added to their resume, going back to Tuscany for the past seven years has kept on being a real treat.
Doing your morning yoga with the idyllic view of the mountains surrounding the farmhouse will help yoga sink into your bodies in a way that no other place can. You won't be able to get enough of the olive oil, honey, and Chianti wine that’s produced on this ‘agriturismo’ farm.
All these home-grown products are part of the meals that are served ‘al fresco’ under the shade of a veranda with a 180 degree view, an image that will remain with you long after you leave.
Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner including wine are included in your package.
Hiking trails pass through the farm’s vineyards and olive groves. If you’re looking for a more relaxed way to explore the area, try horseback riding on one of the long-maned Icelandic horses that live on the farm. San Gimignano, known as the 'Medieval Manhattan' for its thirteen noble towers, visible from the farm, is a glorious hour's hike or a ten minute taxi ride away. A pond and two pools dot the property, perfect places to drink in the surrounding.
