The retreat is limited to 16 participants. Up to 6 people will be resident at the WHY accommodation and the remainders are offered the accommodation at quality B&B establishments close by (transfers to other venues will be provided).


This intensive retreat touches all levels helping you anchor into your individual nature as a unique expression of “one” universal power. In Chinese medicine, that “one” power is viewed as the two complementary energies of Yin and Yang. Yin power is like the Earth, which is substantial, grounded, and contracted. It is a receptive, magnetic feminine energy relative to Yang which is masculine, active, stimulating, and outgoing.

Opening to Yin power gives you access to your deep, hidden reservoirs of energy. Letting down and letting in offer you the direct experience of original source energy. On this retreat, you awaken to Yin as the feminine, gathering, harmonizing, cohesive power of life itself. Using Restorative yoga, meridian-based breath, and movement practices, you strengthen the nurturing, grounding Mother energy which activates the blood and fluid production, regulation, and circulation.

Theories of Tibetan yoga and Chinese medicine are explored as the foundation for the practices. Free time during the day is built in for contemplation, rest, time in nature and individual healing sessions. Evening talking circles support you to apply the teachings to your own life and help integrate your insights. This retreat starts on Sunday, 29 October, at 17:00 with welcome gathering followed by a shared meal. The conclusion is on Sunday, November 5, at 12:30.

Daily schedule

  • 1 hour of morning yoga session
  • 3 hours of (morning or afternoon) interactive class with Tibetan yoga
  • 3 hours of free time for contemplation and / or individual healing sessions
  • 1.5 hours of afternoon yoga Nidra practice

Jo Woollacott
Jo Woollacott is the owner of WHY Retreat and offers retreats from her yoga studio and B&B at Whangarei Heads. She has been teaching yoga for over 35 years and is also a certified Pilates instructor. She is a Kaizen holistic health practitioner, a REPS registered personal trainer, and endorsed by the Exercise Association of New Zealand to provide SMEAEP tax deductible stress management programs.
Cameron Tukapua
Cameron is passionate about helping people connect with their spiritual self-identity as unique expressions of a shared life force. Her offerings draw from ancient wisdom traditions of indigenous cultures, Chinese medicine and Yoga as a path to healing. She founded a NZ government registered College of Chinese medicine which she ran for nine years. She also ran retreats in rural China for 9 years and through those teaching experiences she discovered the power of group healing through connecting to nature, learning, and sharing. Cameron is co-founder of online healing group You Being You.

Retreat location

This retreat will be held at WHY Retreat in Whangarei Heads, New Zealand, with some participants placed in accommodation around the area. The Whangarei Heads Peninsula offers breathtaking scenery and some of New Zealand’s best iconic hiking. With the sheltered beaches of the Whangarei harbor on one side, the sweep of the Pacific Ocean on the other, and dotted with small close-knit communities, take some time out in this wonderland is a must.

The Bream Head Scenic Reserve is classified as an outstanding ecosystem supporting a diversity of species, containing unique archaeological and historical landscape. It represents the largest area of coastal Pohutukawa-Broadleaf forest remaining in Northland and one of the best in the country. Whangarei Heads is approximately 3 hours’ drive from Auckland Airport (AKL) and 2.5 hours’ drive from Auckland Central.

Arrival by airplane

You can fly to the airport in Whangarei and transfer via shuttle or arrange your own transportation.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 50% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
