The rooms at the WHY Retreat are designed to provide a comfortable private experience with two single or twin rooms sharing one bathroom and one queen room with ensuite bathroom. Your room is elegantly appointed, new, and clean. The guest area has its own kitchenette and lounge. Facilities include guest lounge with library and deck, use of a FAR infrared sauna, stream side meditation area, a well-equipped gym, and yoga studio.
This room overlooks McLeod Bay and is a spacious and comfortable double room, which offers a stunning ocean view. Its private deck is the ideal place to sunbathe surrounded by native trees and relax to the sound of the birds. The room has a large double bed, but twin beds can be arranged on request. There is also a private ocean view deck in this room.
The Manaia suite is a deluxe queen room with en-suite bathroom. Enjoy expansive views of the bay from your private deck and sunrise over Mountain Manaia from your bed. Wake up to a symphony of birdsong, sunrise over a skyline of rocky spires, and a panoramic view of the bay.
The scenery is constantly changing as the tide ebbs and flows across the sandbank, and lighting plays on the rocks of the mountain. The room has private ocean view deck and dual orientation with view on McLeod Bay and Mountain Manaia.
The Rosella's nest is a twin room named after the parrot found in Northland and that lives in the area surrounding the yoga retreat. The tiled bathroom with Italian shower is shared with one other room.

When WHY Retreat excavated for their house, they came across five huge rocks that could not be moved. These now form a stone circle around the building.

The retreat includes food for all meals. Breakfast and lunch foods are provided for self-catering and an evening vegetarian meal with gluten-free, dairy-free food will be prepared for you. If you prefer to have meal out there is a cafes nearby and a local English style pub with lunch and evening meals available.
There are many things to do in Whangarei Heads ant its surroundings. The diversity of the scenery may surprise you, starting with the scenic drive out from Whangarei city center which winds around the harbor through pretty seaside communities. Mount Manaia and Mount Aubrey offer a stunning backdrop and challenging hikes just five minutes from the Whangarei Heads Yoga Retreat, and part of the Te Araroa trail which stretches 3000 kilometers from North Cape to Bluff.
Ocean beach, a world class surf beach featuring miles of fine white sand, is accessible by a 10 minute drive or a five hour hike across the headland ridge. Smugglers Bay and the Reotahi Marine reserve offer snorkeling and protected swimming beaches. Take a small boat over to the sandbank to watch the seabirds digging for shellfish.
The local activities include a visit to a giant Kauri tree nearby, the local natural Kiwi habitat, abseiling, kayaking, scenic flights, caves, tennis, bowls, golf, cafes, pubs and restaurants, art galleries and the Easter art trail, or fishing off the McLeod Bay wharf, where you are bound to meet some interesting characters.
Besides Kiwi, you are likely to hear or see many other native birds in the stream side bush and the surrounding reserves.
Enjoy the wonderful scenery, look out for birds, and stop for a swim. Take water and a snack, and don’t forget the camera as the views are often breathtaking!
