You will leave feeling relaxed, energized, and motivated. You will get to enjoy yoga and meditation as well as immersing yourself in nature on the beautiful Whangarei Heads Peninsula. Your hikes include two of New Zealand's top 10 great walks, just a few steps from your accommodation.
The rooms at the WHY Retreat are designed to provide a comfortable private experience with two single or twin rooms sharing one bathroom and one queen room with ensuite bathroom. Your room is elegantly appointed, new, and clean. The guest area has its own kitchenette and lounge. Facilities include guest lounge with library and deck, use of a FAR infrared sauna, stream side meditation area, a well-equipped gym, and yoga studio. A COVID compliant cleaning regime is in force for your safety.
This room overlooks McLeod Bay and is a spacious and comfortable double room, which offers a stunning ocean view. Its private deck is the ideal place to sunbathe surrounded by native trees and relax to the sound of the birds. The room has a large double bed, but twin beds can be arranged on request. There is also a private ocean view deck in this room.
The Manaia suite is a deluxe queen room with en-suite bathroom. Enjoy expansive views of the bay from your private deck and sunrise over Mountain Manaia from your bed. Wake up to a symphony of birdsong, sunrise over a skyline of rocky spires, and a panoramic view of the bay.
The scenery is constantly changing as the tide ebbs and flows across the sandbank, and lighting plays on the rocks of the mountain. The room has private ocean view deck and dual orientation with view on McLeod Bay and Mountain Manaia.
The Rosella's nest is a twin room named after the parrot found in Northland and that lives in the area surrounding the yoga retreat. The tiled bathroom with Italian shower is shared with one other room.

Note all hikes are available self-guided or with the group, depending on the level of fitness. Weather dependent.
Jo Woollacott is the owner of WHY Retreat and offers retreats from her yoga studio and bed and breakfast at Whangarei Heads. She has been teaching yoga for over 35 years and is also a certified Pilates instructor. She is a Kaizen holistic health practitioner, a REPS registered personal trainer, and endorsed by the Exercise Association of New Zealand to provide SMEAEP tax deductible stress management programs.

The Whangarei Heads Peninsula is a rural area just 30 minutes out of Whangarei City at the heart of Northland, offering unsurpassed scenic views, pristine beaches and some of the best hiking in New Zealand.
The Mount Manaia hike, just 5 minutes from WHY, is classed in the top 10-day hikes for New Zealand. The Te Whara hike from Bream's head to Smugglers Cove is classed in the top 10-day hikes in New Zealand and part of the 3000 kilometers Te Araroa track between Cape Reinga in the north to Bluff in the south.

Breakfast and lunch food will be provided for self-catering and a delicious vegetarian dinner will be prepared for a shared evening meal. Specific requests to meet dietary requirements will be catered to as much as possible (vegetarian only).
In addition to the hikes included in the itinerary, you can also book tours with kayaks, abseiling, explore local caves, and much more.
A massage session is available upon request at an additional class. Guests are also welcome to use the far infrared sauna, also available at an additional cost.

Please book your international flight to arrive at Auckland Airport (AKL). Connect by air to Whangarei (WRE). A bus service also runs from Auckland to Whangarei. Whangarei is a three-hour drive from Auckland Airport (AKL). Alternately, the local airport at Whangarei is a 30-minute drive from WHY Retreat. WHY Retreat usually recommends people take the bus or fly to the Whangarei Airport. They can either pick you up from there if they are going to Whangarei that day or help arrange a shuttle for you for 50 NZD.
