To access this short but very scenic hike, you will need a car. To access, drive to the Canyon Overlook Trailhead/parking lot (just to the east of the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel on Route 9). This short trail (1-mile roundtrip) starts at a small parking lot near the east entrance of the tunnel and leads you to stunning views of the main canyon. This hike is accessible year-round.
This easy, family-friendly collection of trails located across from the Zion Lodge offers beautiful views of the collection of small streams and waterfalls. The reward is the Emerald Pools (hence the name). These very unique pools are especially stunning if you can plan the time of day when you visit the pools. When the lighting is just right, the color of the pools is illuminated, and you forget that you are in the desert. The variations of short trails can be taken at your own leisure. This trail gets crowded in the summer months, so prepare to share in the views.
This very pleasant walk is a great way to get out and enjoy nature in the comfort of a paved pathway. Starting at the Temple of Sinawava (the last stop on the Zion shuttle), this is a relaxing two-mile (round-trip) hike along a level paved trail that takes you along the Virgin River on the way to the famous Zion Narrows. The paved walkway makes the wheelchair and stroller accessible. This hike is around 2 miles roundtrip.
Starting at the Grotto Trailhead, this 2.4-mile one-way strenuous hike awards you with one of the most stunning viewpoints you will ever experience. Fair warning—this hike is not recommended for anybody with a fear of heights. The last stretch of this hike is the most difficult, with chains in place to help ease the fears of those frightened by sheer cliffs on both sides of you. I would not recommend this hike in the winter months, though it is accessible.
Starting at the Grotto Trailhead, the hike to Angels Landing follows the longer West Rim Trail backpacking route up and out of the west side of the main canyon. This hike will take between 3-6 hours and will test your physical abilities, but the views make all that sweating well worth the effort.
This day hike begins where the Riverside Walk ends and involves constant hiking in the flowing water of the Virgin River. Every turn is a beautiful view of this indescribable slot canyon that you could spend all day in. The North Fork of the Virgin River (aka "The Zion Narrows") is a section of the Virgin River just upstream from the Temple of Sinawava (the end of the road up the main canyon). Here, the walls of the main canyon close in to form a tall and narrow canyon that surrounds you in beauty. This hike is done in the water, perfect for a hot summer day.
The Narrows is one of the most popular hikes in the park due to the uniqueness and utter beauty that will surround you. With that being said, it is a must to give a warning about the danger of flash floods and water levels that can occur in this area.
The difficulty of hiking the Narrows is greatly affected by water flow, and a strong enough rainstorm can turn a calm and shallow stream into a deadly wall of rushing water. Please check the weather forecast and/or the Backcountry Desk for current conditions and for any advisories.
Remember that it doesn't have to be raining directly above you for a threat to be possible. To see the current and median water levels, check the USGS's water data.
