This retreat will take place at Villa Nilaya Bali Beach, which is where the retreat, meals, and yoga all take place. It is located on absolute beachfront, in a seaside village in the regency of Karangasem as you approach from the west (90 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS)).
The villa is discreetly tucked away in the quiet seaside village of Mendira, at the end of a forest cul-de-sac, facing onto absolute beachfront with sweeping views directly across to the islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, with the sun rising over Lombok to the left and setting behind Padang Bai to the west on the right side.
Mendira is a small, hard-working and relatively prosperous village where local people warmly greet you. Traditional values remain important in Mendira where television is never heard, but the sounds of children practicing gamelan is a pleasure to witness as you stroll the village in the evening, perhaps on the way to one of several local restaurants offering fresh seafood and other excellent local produce prepared a la Balinese, a la Francaise, you can find everything here for a fraction of the price you’d pay in the large restaurants in the busy tourist areas.
The location of Villa Nilaya Bali Beach combines the incredible restfulness which comes from being by the sea with the dramatic mountainous landscape dominated by the holy mountain of Mount Agung which defines Central East Bali. You are just 20 minutes’ drive from the famous Bali Aga villages of Tengenan where a uniquely different village life has coexisted alongside the mainstream Balinese culture, undisturbed for centuries. It is here that you’ll find the beautiful and highly-collectible Double Ikat cloth being woven and of course is still being worn by its inhabitants who strongly guard against modernist incursions.
You can easily access the beach directly from the villa by just 5 steps. Sea swimming is a pleasure here, and although the coral reefs were infamously mined for building materials here in the 1970s, the reef restoration has been very successful, and today, the sea at the bottom of the garden is like an aquarium.
This retreat provides you three three-course dinners at Villa Nilaya Bali Beach (including a welcome barbeque dinner and the final exhibition night party dinner), one fine dining dinner at a popular Candi Dasa restaurant, four lunches at Villa Nilaya Bali Beach, and daily breakfast.
Special diets can be catered for, and there is an emphasis on delicious Balinese flavors with fresh produce and plenty of fresh seafood. Two nights and one lunch are free dining of your choice in your hotel or choose from the many local warungs or restaurants in the village of Mendira Beach or five kilometers away in Candi Dasa.
Villa Nilaya Bali Beach specializes in creating multi-course menus. The secret is always the ground spice mixture called Bali bumbu where each housewife will have her own recipe, but at Villa Nilaya, it comes direct from executive Chef Dewa Ardika and is full of subtle additions you won’t necessarily find in village renditions.
The spices and sauces are patiently ground using a stone ‘ulukan’ (mortar and pestle) and meals are traditionally served on platters of bamboo and banana leaves. Of course, not all the food is spicy, you can order it prepared to just the level of spiciness you enjoy, in fact, the pleasure is not in the ‘heat’ but the complexity of flavors - lemongrass, galangal, ginger, Bali lime, and coriander, to name just a few.
Please book your flight to arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Transfer from the airport is included. Villa Nilaya Bali Beach will pick you up from the airport.
