This retreat will be held in Sayulita, Mexico. Incredible beaches, lush jungles, and a taste of rural Mexico, that’s what you’ll find when you visit Sayulita. While still off the beaten path, Sayulita has begun to attract upscale tourists and adventurers from all over the world thanks to the variety of shops, galleries, restaurants, and available activities. Thanks to its proximity to Puerto Vallarta and the natural beauty of the area, Sayulita now has some of the most sought-after real estate in all of Mexico, and along with its growth, the town has a new ecological awareness.

  • 6 nights’ accommodation at Villa Amor in a stunning oceanfront villa
  • A day trip to Punta Mita for surfing or snorkeling (lunch included)
  • A one hour massage
  • Daily breakfast
  • Daily morning meditation sessions
  • Four surf or paddle board lessons throughout the week
  • Round trip airport transfers from Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR)
  • Three group dinners at Villa Amor and local restaurants

Your day will begin with an optional morning meditation, followed by a vigorous yoga class held in the beautiful oceanfront yoga studio. You will enjoy a hearty breakfast to prepare for an afternoon of surfing, stand up paddle board, exploring Sayulita’s charming town square or pampering yourself with a relaxing massage. The afternoon wraps up with a Restorative Yin-based yoga class, a wonderful way to wind down from the day’s activities. Complete it all with a sound bath (if you haven’t experienced one, you are in for a treat!) Evenings can be spent as a group exploring the extraordinary local cuisine or individually for those who gravitate towards a quieter experience.

The yoga classes are taught by highly experienced, accredited instructors, who will help you grown your practice and learn how to best incorporate it into your daily life. Join this retreat and practice your poses in an open-air studio, with the sound of waves as your background music.

Surfing is a connection to nature that can be both exhilarating and humbling. When you aresurfing, you are out in the fresh air, sunshine and water, challenging yourself, increasing your fitness level, confidence, mental clarity and general well-being. There is nothing quite like the feeling of riding a wave.

The retreat doesn’t just combine surfing and yoga because of the amazing surfing conditions in Sayulita (although it is true that they are pretty exceptional), but because each activity is the perfect complement to the other. Both build strength, flexibility, focus and endurance. Both can be spiritual and meditative, and both definitely make you feel fully alive in the moment. Surfing is, in many ways, yoga on the water. And it is so much fun!

When you join the retreat, you will experience the connection between yoga and surfing first-hand. Your morning yoga class is a perfect pre-surf warmup, getting you ready to paddle out and pop up on your board, invigorated and prepared for what’s next. The more gentle evening yoga class will help you stretch your muscles out and recover from your day on the water.

As with yoga, surfing beginners are welcome on the retreat. Whether you are new to surfing or are an experienced surfer looking to take it to the next level, there is a spot for you. The instructors will tailor their lessons to each student, ensuring it’s a safe and fun time for all. They are highly-experienced guides who love motivating students and seeing them learn and enjoy. Even if your goal is just to stand up and ride a wave for the first time, they will help you achieve it.

Driving directions from Puerto Vallarta

  • From the airport parking area, go straight after exiting the pay station (make a right turn) and immediately get into the left hand lane in order to be able to effectively do a U-turn so as to be traveling north on Hwy 200.
  • Follow the signs for Compestela and Tepic. Initially, you will be on a six-lane highway which will narrow to four lanes and eventually two lanes. Watch carefully and obey the street lights, arrows and your speed.
  • After about 20 minutes, you will pass through the town of Bucerias. Just before Bucerias on your right, you will see a Mega Commercial supermarket where you may wish to stop to buy supplies and drinks.
  • After Bucerias, Mex Hwy 200 continues as a four-lane highway for a few more miles until the turnoff to Punta de Mita. Continue straight to Sayulita.
  • The highway then changes to a two-lane road, and heads up and over a series of hills in a winding and twisting manner with many curves.
  • After about 18 kilometers, you will see a large overhead sign. It is one mile / 1.6 kilometers into Sayulita.
  • Follow the road until you approach a set of yellow studs set in the road just before a bridge and there is a small sign pointing to the right for Sayulita and straight on for Punta de Mita.
  • As you enter Sayulita, continue straight into the center of town towards the plaza. At the plaza (or just before), turn right towards the beach and then turn left so you are paralleling the beach.
  • Continue to the "T" intersection (dirt road) and then turn right. Follow the beach for another quarter miles south until you get to the Villa Amor entrance.

Julie Andres

Julie has had a life-long love for the science of yoga. She has found purpose in helping people with their daily struggles through the use of breath and movement. Inspired by nature, Julie devotes her practice to a higher power: the changing of the seasons, the miracle of life and death and the ability to love and be loved. Influenced by Baron Baptiste, Eiric Orvid and Dee Hine, her classes reflect their unique styles of practice and sequencing, focusing on linking movement with the breath. As an instructor, Julie is compassionate and nurturing as she teaches how to apply the principles found in nature and yoga to your daily life.

During the retreat, you will be served daily breakfast, three group dinners, and one lunch during the day trip to Punta Mita.

During this retreat, you will enjoy a one-hour massage. The treatment is included in the price.

Launching right from the small bay in front of Villa Amor, you can enjoy a day fishing for sailfish, dorado (mahi-mahi), red snapper, bonita, Spanish mackerel, and even tuna in season. The pangas (open-bow boats) can accommodate up to six people and usually head out for anywhere from three to five hours. The cost is around 225 USD per boat including captain, assistant and gasoline.

The village of Sayulita offers a vast array of both beachcombing and hiking around the local area. Hikes can range from half a mile to ten miles round trip. Certain hikes can take you up into the local hills that provide exceptional views of the village and the Pacific Ocean. Other Sayulita hiking options can take you through virgin jungles to remote beaches.

Horseback riding

Riding horses across the Sayulita beach and then into the virgin jungle is something that should be experienced by anyone with a love for animals and the outdoors. Saddled horses will arrive at the reception desk and can take you on a great ride that can last anywhere from one to four hours. Make sure that you wear long pants before going on this ride.

Jungle zip lines

If you’re up for an adventure, the zip lines / canopy tours provide a thrilling way to enjoy the jungle. The local Sayulita zip lines offer 13 different cables that you can slide down at a variety of different speeds. Request reservations via Villa Amor’s full-service property manager and the zip line company will pick you up at the resort.

"I have been on three (!!) surf & yoga retreats with Via Yoga, and they are amazing every time! The planning, and organization is left to Suzie and the Via Yoga staff, and they do an incredible job. I loved practicing yoga in the open yoga space in Sayulita, MX, my yoga teacher (Troy Lucero) wa the very best, the surfing/SUP instructors were all top-notch for students of all levels, the group is led by a Via Yoga host who knows the area and is there to answer any questions you have or to help you trouble shoot any problems. You’re in GREAT hands with Via Yoga– go have a fun vacation!"

"Magical Place. I was there for a Yoga Retreat a couple of weeks ago. It was the most awesome experience I have ever had, it was life changing for me and a large part of it was the Costa Rica Yoga Spa itself as it is very beautiful and the Rancho is very magical. I had one of the beautiful private rooms with a balcony, loved sitting out there in the morning watching the sunrise and listening to the sounds of the jungle waking up. Watching the sunset over the panoramic view of the jungle with the ocean in the background was breathtaking and something I will never forget. I miss watching the sunsets already. The staffs are amazing and made you feel part of a family and the food was absolutely outstanding. Loved the excursions (paddle boarding and ziplining and the trips to the beach)and of course Yoga every day. I enjoyed the Spa treatments and the healing session I had with Ashley. I will definitely go back. Thank you to the staff of the Costa Rica Yoga Spa for the most amazing experience. "
