Since we arrived in 2008, we threw ourselves whole heartedly into restoring the four Xisto stone houses at Vale de Moses with great care and respect to the old local Portuguese traditions of building with natural materials: clay, lime, stone, and wood. We hope youll enjoy staying in these old dwelling places as much as we have over the years.

Relaxing bathrooms have been our luxury treat through the restoration work and so each house has its own. Beds are either quality mattresses or superb Portuguese made futons, all with cotton sheets, blankets, mosquito nets, good pillows, and duvets. Restorative sleep is an essential part of your retreat with us. We allocate guests to our stone cottages depending on the size of group for the week.

Vale de Moses is in the heart of the forested foothills of the Serra de Estrela. Life in these valleys 40 years ago was full of hard working Portuguese small holders who cultivated with their families every available piece of land by creating stone terraces on the hillsides. Small stone houses, adegas (wine making sheds), corals, and water mills pepper the riversides and the valleys for miles around. Hence the name Moses, meaning a place of many millstones. These days, like so many rural communities across southern Europe, those small holdings have been deserted by younger generations of the families that built them, needing to immigrate to the cities or abroad to find work.

Exploring the surrounding areas by foot, by bike, or by car, you enter a bygone age, and marvel at both the views and the stonework of the river and terrace walls that seem to go on forever in all directions. An old forest farming life that thankfully is still being lived here by a handful of our neighbors, so we still can learn how to do it before those old ways are lost forever.

Within a half an hour walk, you can discover the abandoned villages of Eira de Miguel and Felgueiras, with houses built in the 17th century and some stunning views over the Rio Zzere. Families still return through the year to look after their grapes and olives and harvest their pine and eucalyptus trees, but no one lives there. A 10 minute steep hike up the hill is our picturesque village of Amieira with great views north and an old church and a caf that opens only when you bang on the doors. The 2 families whose fathers built all the houses at

Moses a century ago still live in Amieira, and if your Portuguese is up to it, they will share a story or two with you. By car within half hour you can visit lvaro, Oleiros, Orvalho, Cambas, Estreito all of which have cafs and restaurants, shops, and more of the rich traditional Portuguese rural culture to experience.

  • Amieira - 10 minutes
  • Eira de Miguel and Felgueiras - 30 minutes' walk
  • lvaro, Oleiros, Orvalho, Cambas, Estreito - 30 minutes' drive
  • 1 hour body harmonizing massage - Thai, Tui Na, Indonesian, Ayurvedic and/or Acupuncture
  • 3 afternoon sessions exploring the Bandhas and meditation, guided Shavasana, and partner yoga
  • 6 morning yoga and pranayama classes
  • A mid-week trip to the Rio Zzere for a mud bath and swim (weather permitting).
  • All food, accommodation, and facilities
  • Guided silent morning walks in the forest
  • Half hour private health consultation with tongue and pulse diagnosis
  • Transport to and from Oleiros

A retreat encourages us to foster expectations in harmony with our experiences so that a more peaceful or blissful state, contentment, can arise. Daily morning yoga classes designed to challenge your strength, flexibility, and stamina will be broken down into easily accessible steps so that the complete beginner along with the more advanced practitioner can both experience the contentment that yoga posture practice encourages. This Dynamic and Yin yoga inspired week is aimed at broadening our hearts, opening our hips, and finally lengthening our limbs and spine so that we may walk a little taller in our lives, contentedly guided by each and every moment of life and each and every breath.

Yoga is an invitation to relax. Yoga uses our anatomy to restore us physiologically, neurologically, energetically, and emotionally. Yoga is a doorway into the subtle, intuitive, perceptual qualities of our being. Modern western life is often stressful and combative and is heavily focused on the outward. Yoga and meditation are anecdotes. Yoga and meditation advance our inward journey to our own center. It is from this steady, calm, lucid, and awake center that we move outward into our daily lives. Through practice we feel well, whatever the challenges of life.

Yoga is practiced according to the dynamic yoga method as developed by Godfrey Devereux. The dynamic yoga system is a well-balanced system and while challenging, it is instantly available to all levels of practitioner, requiring no profound flexibility, strength, or stamina. It is an unsurpassed system for exploring the journey into meditative movement. Our aim is that at the end of your stay you will feel challenged, relaxed, and replenished with a few more tools to assist you on your way.

Dressing information

For your yoga practice to be more comfortable, soft and stretchy clothing is all you need.

What to bring

To make the most of your stay here, take a few wilder walks in the forest accompanied by our dogs and then cool off from the heat of the afternoons in our natural river pools. Bring a good pair of walking shoes, socks, swimming costume, and water bottle to rehydrate regularly, a warm jumper as the temperature drops in the mountains significantly at night and to cover up after your morning yoga class, a raincoat in spring and autumn, and a good torch, as the paths at night, unless moonlit, are dark.

We provide yoga mats and cotton towels, although you are welcome to bring your own. In summer, bring a sun tan lotion, and in the autumn, mosquito repellent. %Please use the simplest, most natural version you can find of these and other washing products. Youll be in and out of the rivers and the water from your showers goes directly to irrigate orchard trees and shrubs. We have a range of natural soaps, shampoos and toothpaste available to buy here if you prefer.

Remember that whatever you bring down the mountainside to Vale de Moses, youll have to take up again at the end of your stay. We live on the side of a very steep, deep, and pretty valley. Backpacks recommended rather than suitcases. And dont forget your torch.

Special menu request

We are well versed in cooking vegan meals and are more than happy to provide for those who have specific dietary requirements. Please do let us know these in advance.

  • Vonetta Winter

Growing up in the West Indies, Vonetta became acutely aware of the natural and joyful ways people healed themselves and each other through touch, dance, storytelling, simple local food, and a slow soul bolstering approach to life. After 2007, she lived in the rhythm of remote country life. It has been a joy to teach yoga and provide massage and acupuncture treatments from such a place as the Portuguese mountains ever since.

  • Additional treatments

We make tasty, nutritious, and nourishing meals largely from fresh vegetables and fruit available from our own or our neighbors gardens during the season and from our favorite local greengrocers in Oleiros. We provide homely meals rich in pulses, grains and fresh vegetables, low in salt, and high in fresh herbs. Honey from local wild bees is preferred over sugar.

Our food is eclectic in nature fusing Vonnies west Indian cooking with Andys English, Italian roots, Joshuas delight in a blender, and Ellies love of baking. Our food is cooked with mindful attention and according to basic yet profound Ayurvedic principles. This means that apart from tasty, our food is as fresh as possible, mostly cooked with some raw on the side and that we avoid certain food combinations which are difficult to digest, like fresh fruit during or after meals.

We serve our largest meal at lunch with warm and fragrant herbal tea to help you digest it the best. In this way, food is not only enjoyed during mealtimes, but will also truly support your yoga practice and well-being.

Your stay includes a fruit breakfast, hearty lunch, and light dinner; a range of herbal teas, fresh fruit, nuts, and seeds are always available in the farmhouse. If we are all very lucky, Eloise will make us one or two of her scrumptious vegan cakes. Food for the body, the spirit, and the soul.

Holistic treatments

Tui Na massage

Chinese Tui Na massage is a deep tissue treatment on a clothed or covered body excellent for chronic complaints such as whiplash injury, tension, disc problems, rheumatoid arthritis, headaches, migraines, neuralgia, depression, insomnia, chronic strain, frozen shoulder, lumbar pain, and other illnesses of repetitive strain. You will be kneaded into a state of health.

Thai massage

Thai massage a second clothed massage technique performed on the floor is a meditative dance between therapist and the person receiving the treatment. In a Thai massage, the nadis, energetic or Qi lines are systematically pressed and stimulated by thumbs and hands to remove energetic blockages from the body. Thai massage is a wonderful compliment to yoga practice as it invites deeper opening in the joints, particularly the hip sockets and the shoulders encouraging flexibility and mobility, a deep sense of wellbeing and contentment. After a Thai massage, the body drifts as light as a feather on a breeze, the spirit is refueled, and the mind contemplative and serene.

Indonesian massage

If you prefer an oil treatment, then Indonesian massage is also available. Indonesian massage is characterized by deep work along the lines of muscle tissues to lengthen shortened and tightened muscle fibers. Indonesian massage is soulful. You simply lie on the table and allow yourself to be perfumed, pampered, and nourished. Yummy!

Acupuncture and cupping

Acupuncture rebalances the energetic potential of your body by stimulating energetic points or pools of energy through the insertion of needles. Acupuncture examines your physiological and psychological health as a whole to look for patterns of disharmony or imbalance in your body. You are viewed as a whole being in need of retuning so to speak. Symptoms of disharmony may be pain in legs, sciatica, insomnia, stress, or irritable bowel syndrome, however, in acupuncture the symptoms are treated within the context of the whole of your body.

Additional treatments

During the week you can also book in additional treatments with one of our therapists available. The cost is 75 EUR for each 90 minute treatment session, payable at the end of your stay. Other therapies available include:

  • Back roll and stretch
  • Colon therapy massage
  • Cupping
  • Du meridian release for the neck and shoulders
  • Head massage with acupuncture
  • Hip opening Thai
  • Moxabustion
  • Roll and acupuncture needles for joint or back pain
  • Vital Qi energizer hands and feet

Therell be plenty of time, when youre not on the massage table, to cool off, and swim in the natural river pools cascading through the valley. One afternoon, we all go off road to the Rio Zzere for a mud bath in isolated paradise. Its an ancient therapy as well as an incredible skin cleanse. On the way back, we stop in to the cafs of Abitureira to meet some of our lovely neighbors. One of the highlights of the week for many of our guests.

"I found Vale de Moses by chance while looking for a restorative holiday location that also promised yoga, nourishing food and stunning scenery. I had high hopes, but never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that this place, and the people who keep it so beautiful and vibrant would so far exceed my expectations. From before my arrival, I felt well taken care of - Andrew was so responsive to my questions and provided all the information I needed to feel comfortable arriving to this remote paradise. Upon arriving, there was a gut feeling of having come home. Perhaps it is because Vale de Moses is Vonn and Andrews home and they treat their visitors like family. Our group of 16 enjoyed conversations and one another's company around family-style mealtimes -- chef Raul is an artist and a really fun person. His kitchen and food are full of spirit and heart and deliciousness. Vonn's radiance and gifts as both a yoga teacher and a healer (massage therapist and acupuncturist) are unmistakable. Her teachings and treatments refreshed me in a way that simply typing words cannot capture, and while I did not meet with Peter, I heard glowing reviews of his treatments as well. In the spirit of giving an honest review, I do want to offer one word of caution - the last hour of the 3.5 hour coach ride from Lisbon to Olieros to get to the Vale De Moses can be challenging if you get motion sickness. I strongly advise dramamine or motion sickness bracelets and a settled stomach for your journey to and from this paradise. I hope you take the opportunity to visit this special place, a home away from home", edited

"For my first step traveling alone abroad, I decided to do something completely out of my comfort zone, nervous didn't cover how I felt, but it was so the right thing for me. I stayed in the tipi and it was the only place to sleep, I booked it knowing nothing about it, but it was in the perfect spot and it was all part of the experience, Everyone was so friendly and helpful, the yoga very professional and you don't have to be brilliant at yoga. Vonetta shows you the way, and I must give a shout out to their amazing chef Raul, he loves his cooking and produces magnificent healthy dishes, he knows his stuff and the Thai massages are excellent, I don't relax easily, but afterwards you couldn't help but be relaxed, I came home a completely different person, so much stronger, it did what it meant to...If your looking to get away from everything, or just something different, then this is the place, go and enjoy the experience, I did."

"Besides the stunning location the team are brilliant. Sleeping under canvas as we did in a furnished teepee was unforgettable as were the views of the valley and mountains. Felt recharged and energised and my daughter keeps asking when can we go back. Kudos to Andy and Von for creating an awesome and holistic retreat."

"Most wonderful place ever! The beautiful nature around is the best but that goes just as much for Andrew and Vonetta, their kids, dogs and everyone around! And the yoga of course. I really loved how they're so connected to the place and people that live around and will give you the chance to get to know a bit of Portuguese life around the area. The people, program and food are so revitalizing. If you need a moment to completely nourish yourself, this is the place without a doubt!"

The double bed in our Soulpad was so comfortable, the food delicious, the treatments excellent and the yoga Shala was just amazing. Please thank Vonetta for her wonderful teaching, I have been so inspired since I got back! We came home rested, relaxed and rejuvenated and you cannot ask for more than that. :)"

"Tashi is such a skilled teacher and a loving person. My yoga practice has been transformed. I'm feeling generally much fitter and more alive. The food was beyond describable! I haven't ever experienced such abundant daily feasts. Raul has to be one of the best! And he does it all with such love too! Marco, Josh, Vitor, PJ, Lisa, Tania and Sonia all helped to make the time spent there, treasured and special. I love the way everybody sits down to eat together. What a great team to have working in harmony! The group was fab and we had a wonderful time together there in that magical, soulful 'heaven on earth'. That will be enough to keep me going for a long time. Vale de Moses, and all of you, are my new "Happy Place"!"

"Vale de Moses is the most perfect place to retreat! You are surrounded by gorgeous nature, awe inspiring people, incredible yoga and delicious food. Andrew, Vonetta and all who work there, couldn’t have made us feel more welcome even if they tried. By the time we sadly had to leave, we really felt like part of the family. We have come away with everything we longed for, as well as feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. So many people say they need another holiday when they get back from one, but that is certainly not the case here. We have been left with experiences and feelings that we will be able to tap into for the rest of our lives. We will be back! Thank you to all the team who made our retreat so uniquely special :) xxx"

"Before even leaving for the retreat, Andrew emailed everyone and introduced us all to each other, giving us the chance to meet up prior to the coach journey, if we wished to. A very informative Welcome Pack was also sent, helping us to prepare for the trip."

"You are welcomed with open arms and genuine smiling faces when you arrive at Vale de Moses. A cup of tea and a deliciously sweet, yet healthy treat awaits (which is exactly what is needed after the coach journey). We stayed in the Tipi during week one and it was incredible. Being able to watch the stars from bed and take outdoor showers on a daily basis really brought us back to nature, and back into ourselves. It was exactly what we needed. For our second week, we were honoured when offered Andrew and Vonettas sons room. That just shows how quick it is to become and feel part of their family. It was so lovely to gain a different experience for our second week. From the conversations we had with everyone there, each bedroom and place to stay had its own lovely character and we are sure that wherever you sleep, you will not be disappointed.Vale de Moses is an exceptionally safe place to be, both physically, and emotionally. Everyone in the surrounding villages who we came across were just lovely, and there are no scary animals; just a few wild boars, cute geckos and three beautiful dogs (who patrol the land day and night!). There is a cat, who you will most likely only see once or twice. You can be yourself here without judgement. It really is a place for you to be and let go if your heart desires. You are surrounded by like-minded people, where any emotion is always ok.Starting each day with a walking Meditation, hosted by Andrew is wonderful. He fills you with wisdom and insight, alongside his cheeky and playful character. When you are not eating, practising yoga, or experiencing out of this world massages, there is plenty to do. You can socialise, take time for yourself, laze around a fresh water pool, or lie in one of the many hammocks and sun loungers that are dotted around the land. Or, you can hike to a variety of places, with or without the dogs. There are plenty of books to choose from in their library and you can connect with the outside world if you so wish. The river trip was a lovely way to end the week. Both Vonetta and Andrew, as well as everyone else who works there, went out of their way to make sure that our holiday was perfect. The love and care that they have for everyone there, as well as for what they have created, shines through and is so wonderful to see and experience. They adore their space with such passion and love having people to share it with. We will most certainly be back and couldn't recommend Vale de Moses more highly. Thank you."

"WOW! The Thai Massage course and accompanying Yoga sessions to enable us to be better massage therapists was a week of a lifetime! Vale de Moses was a perfectly situated place for the course, delicious food, welcoming hosts, and professional teachers made it an incredibly special location to gain these new skills. The cost of the course does not even reflect the worth of the knowledge we gained. Being massaged and massaging for hours a day in the beauty of Vale de Moses was pure gift. I came away with the techniques ready to practice on my family and friends. Thank you to Peter Packard for his excellent teaching skills and patience as we continually asked questions. Peter was such a jolly fellow with a passion for the material he was teaching and clearly a first rate Thai Massage therapist. Thank you to Vonnie who treated us to her wealth of knowledge as a massage therapist. In the mornings she lead us in yoga to prepare us to be better practitioners, sharing breathing techniques and special stretches. Andy and his morning walks were a great way to start the day and allow us to meditate even before we hit the mat for the morning sessions. All in all the staff and the facilities were charming and sensitive to the needs of the guests. I would highly recommend a retreat at Vale De Moses - you will come away feeling special and loved. As for the Thai Massage - well this was a whole other level of healing and skill acquisition. I hope that they run other courses."

"The biggest testament for a holiday is if you book to return - I had booked my return to Vale de Moses within 2 days of landing in the UK! I cannot recommend this yoga retreat more highly. Andy and Vonnie are two very kind and compassionate people, who make you feel totally looked after, and provide a beautiful haven where you really can find some peace and tranquility. I thoroughly enjoyed the yoga, having previously practiced very infrequently, and am working at integrating it much more into my life back in London. The food was delicious - there was not a moment when I felt hungry, the thai massage and acupuncture allowed me to have my first proper nights sleep in well over a year (monumental), and the 3 dogs - Moses, Moksha and Saffy - were like constant companions - so gentle, friendly, playful and happy to be showered with love. It was very hard to say goodbye to them! 11 out of 10 stars for this unique and special place which attracts a lovely type of person from across Europe, to share your week with. I can't wait to go back" website, edited

"Incredible food. Incredible and inspiring scenery, excellent yoga classes (ours was run by Fleur), pizza parties and one very exciting excursion.Andrew, Vonetta and the rest of family (including the volunteers) are so accommodating and we felt welcome immediately. The silent walks which Andrew ran were fantastic as was the quality of the massage treatments available during our stay. My injured lower back cleared itself up!The view from the yoga chalet is stunning, and Fleur who was the best yoga teacher I've ever had. Full of authentic positivity and added a musical touch! The excursion to the lake was awesome, and there is even a spot where you can try some slack lining should you tire of the gorgeous natural pools and restful atmosphere.I think back to our visit often and miss the whole experience tremendously! I hope to be back again."

"Having never been on retreat I wasn't sure what to expect, I wasn't disappointed. Breathtaking surroundings, fantastic hosts, therapists with magic hands, enthusiastic helpful volunteers, incredible food and the most wonderful yoga. We had a fair amount of rain which was unusual for September but honestly this didn't impact negatively on the experience. This retreat was healing and the best thing I've ever done for myself. I felt that everyone went out of their way to make the experience first class. I'm a changed woman and I can't wait to get back this year."

"Accompanied by my daughter, I recently spent a week at this yoga retreat. Neither of us had any previous yoga experience, but we were assured that was not a problem. From the moment you arrive at this oasis of tranquillity, there is a sense of calm and serenity. I was a million miles away from my busy and heavily populated London life.I dipped in and out of the yoga, eventually deciding I just wasn't flexible enough. My daughter however was hooked and, inspired by Fleur, the fantastic yoga teacher, she intends to continue the yoga. Fleur is one of those rare people whose presence just lights up the room, a truly good person.Andy and Vonetta, our hosts, are also inspirational. They have put so much of themselves, body and soul, into making this place somewhere special, and they have succeeded! Andys early morning guided walks were a great way to start the day. Kats' freshly prepared food was simply delicious. I hadn't realised that healthy eating could be so much fun! Vonettas massage and acupuncture treatments are restorative and replenishing. You get one session included in the price and then you can opt for further sessions, which most people go for.The accommodation is spread out and currently accessed by some pretty steep and, in parts, quite challenging paths. The bathroom facilities are unconventional and pretty basic but after the first 24 hours it all felt quite normal. The best bit for me was meeting such a great group of people there were 12 of us on our retreat. The group dynamic worked so well and I feel so privileged to have met such truly amazing people and shared such a fantastic experience."

"I discovered this place first in May 2013 and immediately fell in love. I went back in May 2014. There are so many things to love about this place. The nature and surroundings at Moses are so beautiful with forest-covered mountains, running rivers and spectacular views. With lots of tracks it's perfect for running or hiking to explore and feel the powerful nature. The yoga chalet is like no other yoga chalet I have ever seen. With windows all around it feels like you are on top of the threes and you still have the amazing view while you are practising. The food at Moses is what everyone is talking about while they are there, and with good reason! Warm porridge and fruit for breakfast and for lunch and dinner there is a whole buffet of fresh vegetarian dishes made of local products and with lots of love. You will never go hungry! And then there is the Winter family, the lovely family who runs this place. Let me just make it short - you will love them straight away. They are among the nicest and most fantastic people I have ever met. With them is also a wonderful team of workers and volunteers.I just love this place, it gives you peace of mind and makes you feel good."

"Simply, shortly and sharply: people, this place is worth visiting, going and staying! One advice: visit, go, stay! You won't regret, vice versa. You will thank yourself for making a right decision. After walking the Camino De Santiago (500km) I truly needed to rest (in peace). Thus, I decided to book a yoga retreat in Vale De Moses, where I could relax and recover from the pilgrimage. The week in the Portuguese mountains provided me not only the relaxation I needed, but also and foremostly a thoroughly amazing experience filled with amazing yoga classes, healing massage (Tui Na and Thai!), new friends from all over the world, healthy vegetarian food, mud bath, swimming in the forest ponds, nights in a lovely tipi seasoned with a lot of laughter, loads of love, jugs of joy and the fantastic feeling of togetherness. This was exactly a kind of a place that I personally needed in this life situation. I dare to claim that everyone, absolutely everyone can benefit from the retreat in Vale De Moses especially those living in big cities, having busy schedules and hectic lifes. This place will teach and remind us what is truly important in life and what our bodies and minds really need. After a week in Moses retreat, I am born again and ready to face the challenges of the world again, with a purer, cleaner, fresher mind and a body that bends and twists and turns without pain !"

"I went last summer to Vale do Moses with friends, and loved it. When I needed some quality R&R after a hectic few work months I knew this was the perfect place to give me back my self, and was perfectly content going on my own knowing how welcoming the Winter family, their helpers and other guests would be. It's so special here. The location is stunning, nestled in a valley high up in the Portuguese mountains, the yoga studio seems like it's hanging in the air with panoramic views to on 2 sides - morning yoga sessions are here are both inspiring and calming - Vonetta and Kat are fantastic teachers, I feel like I really progressed but they've kept the fun in it. In fact there's fun throughout the holiday - it's may be a retreat but it's food for the soul and there's lots of laughter too.Kat's cooking is so tasty that we'd keep going back for 2nd and 3rds long after we were full. The treatment room is calming and Vonetta's skills are endless - she seems able to turn her hand to sooth any ailment or ache. They welcome you into their home and into their village which they've made real efforts to connect with and support, and this welcome atmosphere extends to all the guest who in turn really do look after one another. Andrew's trip to the river for the mud bath can't be missed if only for the ridiculous photos. Moses is a unique place, and one that I'll definitely be returning too."

" I can think of no better, more nurturing environment for a yoga retreat. Everything given so freely and I felt so looked after. An amazing place to practice Yoga with caring people, who open up their family home for you to be a part of it. "

" Such beautiful, lush mountains. The genuine warmth and hospitality of the Winters was at least as beneficial as the yoga, massage, hearty vegetarian food and being so close to nature. "

" I absolutely loved staying at Andrew and Vonetta's. As my first yoga retreat I was warmed by their welcome and challenged by the yoga routine, nourished by the conversation and fabulous fare and awed by the views. Would do it again without hesitation. A very positive experience, which tuned my mind into my body and helped guide me towards more mindfulness and connecting with the present. After my visit I began meditations regularly as well as yoga and continue with this as it feels so beneficial to my wellbeing. All the best for your continued energy outflowing and compassionate caring work. "
