During the retreat, you will be staying at Villa Miela, Vipazar, Montenegro. It is a beautifully restored stone farmhouse offering tranquility, style, and comfort from its hillside location inside the borders of the wild national park. You will be taking in its panoramic lake or mountain views as you practice yoga on the terrace or from the guest bedrooms. All the bedrooms have a balcony or their own private access as well as a private bathroom.

Relax in the shared areas which include a comfortable indoor lounge with film library. There is also a further chill out area with hot tub or plunge pool, sun loungers and hammock, and extensive orchard gardens outside where you will find a boules court and the occasional wild tortoise.


Hatha Vinyasa yoga

Hatha Vinyasa Flow is a form of yoga combining a physical, mental, and spiritual yoga which encourages students to find a subtle balance between effort and relaxation. Hatha in particular uses movement and breath together to produce a 'flow' of postures that lead from one to the next. The goal is to develop strength, flexibility, and relaxation in both body and mind.

Classes will include a warm up looking at the correct alignment and breathing, a dynamic flowing sequence followed by standing and seated postures combining stretches, twists, and forward and back bending, and will be finished with a deep relaxation and meditation. Workshops are mostly in the morning at Villa Miela, lasting up to 90 minutes, but will also take place at some amazing locations in the national park.

Daily schedule

Day 1

Arrival at Lake Skadar. Welcome and check-in to your base for the week, Villa Miela, next to the picturesque lakeside village of Virpazar. Welcome dinner and drinks on the terrace.

Day 2

You will have a morning workshop at Villa Miela and a boat cruise to beautiful Kom monastery. Experience the lake's mirrored waters and lily pads close up as you chug along to reach a semi-hidden water channel leading to the most beautiful and least known of the lake's island monasteries. The views of the chapels and surviving 15th century frescoes found here are simply stunning. The evening is free to dine at a local restaurant or self-cater.

Day 3

You will have a morning yoga and a three-hour hike to the medieval hill village of Godinje to practice in the late afternoon sun in an ancient corn-grinding circle. This hidden hiking trail from Villa Miela's door offers glorious lake views and the scent of wild herbs as you walk on an old donkey trail forgotten by the modern world.

A packed lunch is included, but there is also the option to have lunch in the 14th century cellar of a local restaurant/ winery. In the evening, you will enjoy a group dinner at the Uksanovic Winery in Lake Skadar Valley.

Day 4

You will start early with a 15-minute walk to Besac fortress in Virpazar to practice yoga in a unique setting of its newly restored roof terrace. The birdsong, historic setting, and panoramic views will leave you energized and ready to enjoy the rest of the day, which is free to spend however you wish. The evening is also free to dine at a local restaurant or self-cater.

Day 5

Today is all about relaxation and getting you to unwind and de-stress as much as possible. Late morning, you will depart from Virpazar for a 40-minute boat trip to an idyllic private freshwater beach. Here you can swim, relax, and practice yoga before enjoying late afternoon buffet at the beach restaurant. The evening is free.

Day 6

You will have morning yoga and a kayak trip to Beska Island Monastery. You will head to the village of Murici on the southern shores of the lake for a gentle excursion by kayak to visit the nuns of 14th century Beska Island Monastery. You will have the lake all for yourself as you swim and kayak in crystal clear waters and take in the awesome views, varied bird-life, and glorious solitude. In the evening, you will visit the Dajkovic family homestead and honey farm as a group for a divine "zero mile" dinner of organic and home produced food and beverages.

Day 7

You will have a morning yoga and a visit to the northern shores. On your final day, you will head off to see the spectacular wetlands and winding rivers of the northern part of the lake. Part car safari, part hiking, you will be taken to a stunning natural pool with waterfalls, an impressively large cave, and for more wild swimming at the source of a magnificent river.

Lunch (included) is at the picturesque lake village of Rijeka Crnojevica, which is known by its famous arched bridge. The evening is free to dine at a local restaurant or self-cater.

Day 8

Departure day. Check-out is at 10 a.m.

Haydana Mugosa
Haydana is a homegrown pioneer of yoga in Montenegro and is the owner of her own studio in capital city, Podgorica, where she specializes in the Vinyasa yoga. Since she was young, she has excelled at and enjoyed sport, dance, and music. As a young adult, she fell in love with yoga and was later tutored by the Californian yogini, Lara Tanzman, to become an expert in both Hatha and Vinyasa yoga. She regularly appears in Montenegrin media as a lifestyle and fitness guru and led her first retreat for Undiscovered Montenegro in 2013.

Retreat location

The retreat will take place at Lake Skadar National Park, a vast stretch of freshwater circled by dramatic karst mountains and a protected Ramsar wetland of international importance. This is one of Europe's last remaining wilderness areas with approximately 400 square kilometers of untouched nature offering home to some of the world's most rare species, including the Dalmatian Pelican and a natural paradise to all manner of other wildlife.

In spring, when this retreat is held, the wild flowers and orchids found on at the lake's edges are at their best and the hikes will be filled with their delicious fragrance. Kayaking will take you along the lilypads to astounding lake views and rocky islands.

Things to do (optional)

When you are not out exploring Lake Skadar by foot or kayak, you can choose to kick back and relax at the villa, head to the Adriatic Coast for some beach time, or visit the nearby historic stone towns of Stari Bar, Budva, or Cetinje, Montenegro's former royal capital. All of them are less than one-hour drive from Villa Miela.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Podgorica Airport (TGD). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Undiscovered Montenegro will pick you up from the airport.

Tivat Airport (TVT) is one hour and 15 minutes away, while Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) in Croatia, is just over the border, at a distance of two and a half hours drive along stunning coastline.
