Ulpotha's natural charms lend themselves readily to a deeply satisfying experience of yoga. If ever there was a place made for yoga, Ulpotha is it. Though Ulpotha was not planned at the outset as a Sri Lankan Yoga centre, yoga very quickly took its central place in the Ulpotha experience through a series of serendipitous events. Having done so, it is hard to imagine a place better suited to the practice of this ageless discipline. A variety of yoga styles is on offer to suit a wide range of preferences. Yoga will be practised in the yoga shala, which is essentially an open-sided hall that lets in nature's charms, from gentle breezes to bird song. On occasion, classes are conducted further afield: beneath the splaying branches of a Banyan tree, or on top of Monkey Rock, or below the neighbouring temple - or wherever else takes the collective fancy of those present.
Many of the world's most respected yoga teachers come to Ulpotha. Every morning there is an optional yoga class in a large, open-sided building with a palm leaf roof, or in the cool dappled shade of a banyan tree. Teachers who are teaching at Ulpotha are very experienced and are open to teaching many levels of students within a class. Some may also guide dawn walks in the beautifully wooded surrounding hills for those who wish.
As Ulpotha attracts high-quality yoga instructors, some guests come mainly for the yoga classes. But since Ulpotha was never intended to be primarily a yoga centre, there is no pressure to attend classes and life does not hinge on classes of any kind. So you will not feel like an outsider if yoga is not for you. This is a place to unwind, be gentle with yourself, live close to nature and simply be; or if you feel energetic, it is a wonderful place to exercise and rejuvenate.
An excursion once a week (A half-day excursion trip during Week 1 and a full day excursion during week 2), to one of the nearby Cultural heritage sites, or the beach. There is no yoga session, on the afternoon of the half-day excursion trip (week one of the retreat), nor on the day of the excursion trip during week two.
Mika teaches regular group and private classes in Paris and holds retreats around the world. His wise and playful retreats in Ulpotha since 2007 are extremely popular, so be sure to book early.
PJ Stambaugh practices a form of therapeutic bodywork called Structural Energywork, designed to help you gain relief from chronic aches and pains as well as increase overall flexibility and range of motion. Performed on the floor in Thai massage style with the participant in loose and comfortable clothing, PJ brings energy flow and mobility by way of gentle stretching, targeted thumbing, selective forearm, knee and foot pressure.
Marcia's therapy brings flexibility and mobility to the joints and muscles, allowing for the free flow of vital energy, simultaneously releasing deep-seated toxins within the body tissues and stimulating the general circulation. Therapeutic effects are felt in the entire being, bringing the emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies to a state of equilibrium, touching the soul of the client.
