True North Vinyasa is a yoga teacher training true to the essence of Vinyasa with a fresh and open-minded perspective. This is an immersion into a transformational personal physical practice. It's a hands-on catapult into skillful Vinyasa teaching and the business of being a teacher. It's a tool kit that will help you find your voice and your calling as a yoga teacher. True North Vinyasa stays true to the core of modern Vinyasa. This means they don't provide answers and they never ask you to memorise a sequence or a script. In fact, they won't even give you a sequence. Instead, they will focus on the foundational knowledge you need in order to create your own sequences and scripts with confidence. You will learn the craft of teaching Vinyasa.
You will stay at Casa Paco D’ilhas. This place is full of soul and history, vintage furniture, rustic wooden floors, and beautiful fireplaces. Casa Palheiro, Casa Celeiro, and Casa Acores are just a few names of the unique charming rooms at Casa Paço D’Ilhas Guesthouse. Some of them are full little houses in the garden and some are rooms in the main building. All rooms are decorated with their own unique style and colors and are shared for 2-4 people with shared bathrooms. Some single rooms are available, make sure to let us know early if you wish to book these.
During the three-week intensive training, the entire venue is just for the group. You'll take full advantage of the sweet dining area with a fireplace and the lounge with its veranda for theory and group work. The indoor yoga shala has lots of light and is beautifully situated in the garden where you can also use two outdoor yoga decks/terraces (you always try to move around to different places depending on the task of the day and the weather). In addition, the garden has two swimming pools, a veggie garden, plenty of areas to hang out and hideout, and a lovely fire pit.
In November, when you'll be at the guesthouse, the weather tends to be a mixed bag. You will usually enjoy beautiful sunny days, where the outdoor yoga deck will be inviting, but you will also see some rain and cozy up by the fireplace indoors. Casa Paco D'Ihlas is the perfect place to accommodate you this time of year.
The kitchen team at Casa Paco D’ilhas is absolutely amazing. For breakfast, you can expect colorful smoothie bowls, overnight oats, homemade granola, roasted nuts, nut butters, superfood, and fresh fruit. Lunches and dinners are abundant and flavourful fusion dishes inspired by the staff and owners' travels around the world.
The training follows and greatly exceeds the outline of Yoga Alliance. Students who complete the training are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®). But above all, it will mark the beginning of your new life as a skilled, articulate, creative, and inspirational Vinyasa teacher.
Note: Clear verbal communication and a varied, inspirational way with words are essential parts of your success as a yoga teacher. While this training is in English, True North Vinyasa is aware that you may not teach in English. They will encourage you to work in your language whenever possible but they can only offer effective support in English, Swedish, and Spanish.
From day one, you will be guided in deepening your practice and fine-tuning the skills you'll need to be an empowered and empowering yoga teacher. Your own personal practice and choices, on and off the mat, make up the foundation of your offerings as a teacher.
Exploring the refinement of body, movement, breath, energy flow, and clarity of mind is the base of your training. Be prepared to push your mental and physical boundaries throughout these intensive three weeks. Be prepared for major shifts, changes, and transitions – again, some of the key components of Vinyasa flow yoga.
True North Vinyasa offers this course as a 20-day all inclusive intensive with additional preparation time before training begins. The intensive format allows you to fully dedicate yourself to a transformational practice and journey. They believe the personal immersion is a key component in becoming a yoga teacher. You will need to be prepared to work hard in this training.
True North Vinyasa believes in the power of beautiful surroundings and good nourishing food. For your training, they carefully pick amazing venues in central west coast Portugal. You will be staying in an aesthetically stimulating small retreat center, exclusive to your group, with a great boutique style and attention to detail. The venues are close to Lisbon and its international airport (no more than 1 hour).
True North Vinyasa is a strong team of two main teachers. Together they have 18 years of combined teaching experience and over 30 years of combined practice. They are ready to share their knowledge of studio ownership, organising fully booked retreats, sequencing memorable classes, and designing unique, sold-out workshops. But they are also ready to share their mistakes and lessons learnt the hard way from the business of yoga.
Group size for the trainings are limited to 16 students, making the student-teacher ratio 8:1. This is unusual and guarantees individual attention and a high quality teacher training.
True North Vinyasa has a solid worldwide network and will continue to offer insight and mentorship for an unlimited time after the teacher training has ended.
True North Vinyasa believes in a strong, diverse team and will invite inspiring and experienced guest faculty for added perspectives.
A lot of yogis look to teacher trainings simply to learn more about yoga and to advance their personal practice. While you will get all this, True North Vinyasa is dedicated to educating teachers, not advanced yogis. True North Vinyasa does a lot of actual teaching from day one.
Being a yoga teacher is competitive. While True North Vinyasa gives you a strong skill set to become an amazing teacher, they are also dedicated to sending you off with solid knowledge of how to build your brand, run your business, and succeed financially. They devote much more time to this than most teacher trainings.
The private retreat center is located in the Portuguese countryside, with lots of garden space and a pool. True North Vinyasa closes the door to the outside world and immerse fully into a physical practice. You'll start practicing the art of teaching, shifting from being a student to becoming aware of the teacher's perspective.
True North Vinyasa focuses increasingly on the teacher's skill set and toolbox. You are gradually introduced to sequencing, alignment, adjusting and assisting, class themes, and anatomy. You'll start to connect the dotted lines between ancient teachings and modern yoga. You are invited to explore finding your own voice and offering, as well as the technicalities of designing and successfully executing classes for different types of students and needs.
True North Vinyasa invites you to fully step into the role of a yoga teacher. You continue your daily practice, adding a more thorough analysis of each class and incorporating an increasing amount of hands on teaching and adjusting. You are introduced to leadership and self care, plus the skills needed to build a business in yoga as well as branding and marketing.
Welcome circle, introduction, and your first class with True North Vinyasa is at 4 p.m. on arrival day. Closing circle and ceremony is in the late evening of day 19. The following day is check-out (day 20) and breakfast is your last meal at the venue.
The daily schedule will vary somewhat. There is no day off, but there are schedule self studies for two full days.
