Joanne Barry

Joanne has been sharing her humor, sense of vitality, creativity and yoga practice with people in Tulum since 2006. She combines her years of yoga instruction with a lifetime of body knowledge developed as a competitive athlete. Her life philosophy of cherishing each moment and oneself is evident in each of her practices, reminding others that each breath and each moment is a gift. Joanne is accredited to teach yoga by the AAAI / ISMA (American Aerobic Association International / International Sports Medicine Association) and recently a 100 Hour Yin Teacher Training, 2017

Chelsea McGettigan

Yoga Alliance RYT 200 (Yoga Dicha)

Chelsea is a long-time California transplant who adores her (sun-safe) beach life. She began her practice at Moxie Yoga & Fitness in the Mission District of San Francisco and completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training at Yoga Dicha in Tulum, Mexico. She is passionate about arm balances, good food, and her dog, Lulu. Her Ashtanga-inspired Vinyasa classes are energizing sequences focused on safe alignment and intentional movement. Though she is thrilled by challenges, she believes there is incredible strength in being gentle with oneself.

Daria Hines

Yoga Alliance RYT 300 (Alive Yoga)

Daria found yoga more than 12 years ago and it has helped to heal her body, mind, and heart along the way of past injury. She has studied with Shiva Rea, Mathew Cohen, and Jorgen Christiansson in California and received her 300-hour Yoga Alliance certification from Daniel Aaron of radiantly Alive Yoga in Ubud, Bali. She teaches Restorative, Yin, and Children's yoga at Tribal.

Eugenia Russian

Eugenia received her certification in Hatha yoga in 2006 and since 2009, her study and teaching are dedicated to the Iyengar method. She came to Tulum in 2014. In early 2015, she completed her grade II certification in the Iyengar tradition of yoga. She constantly updates her knowledge and teaching skills about the Iyengar method through workshops and seminars. Eugenia teaches Iyengar yoga five times a week at Tribal and one Saturday a month, she teaches a restorative Iyengar class. Tribal Yoga has wall-fitted ropes that are used in Eugenia’s classes to perfect the alignment in the asanas.

Flavio Lopez

Flavio grew up in Mexico City with a passion for innovative ideas and extreme sports and, like many people, he began practicing yoga to cure an injured ankle in 2001 while he was studying industrial engineering. He was fascinated at the way the human body mimicked the industrial machines he was studying and through his Hatha yoga practice, he correlated the repair of his body to a technical repair like the restoration of a machine. Flavio was certified to teach in 2011 and shortly after, he came to the Mexican Caribbean and Tulum to find more yoga and balance in his life.

Iris Campion

Iris completed her Sivananda yoga teacher training in 2001 in the Bahamas and has been teaching Hatha yoga ever since. She provides treatments, classes, and consultations in Ayurveda since graduating from California College of Ayurveda in 2005. She completed additional Ayurvedic studies at the Ayurvedic Institute in 2007 in New Mexico. Yoga and Ayurveda provided profound relief for Iris from chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia from a young age.

Ricardo Castro

Ricardo is from Northern Mexico, a small town called Tampico. He developed his love for bodily movement and the interaction between body and mind through martial arts, loving both the traditional aspect and the competition. He began yoga to improve his alignment in competitions and immediately fell in love with its focus on balancing body and mind. He is new to teaching yoga but an old soul with years in martial arts and the mind-body connection. He received his training in 2015 in Vinyasa flow at Yoga Dicha in Tulum, where he now lives.

Mariana Borbolla

Mariana moved to Tulum just three years ago from Guadalajara, Mexico. She studied yoga in Playa del Carmen and received her certification in Vinyasa flow from Alan Montaño. Developing a dedicated and constant practice showed her the internal and external changes yoga brought about in herself. Subsequently, she decided to share the yoga practice as a teacher. Mariana shows her students how yoga can help them live less accelerated lives and be in the moment, thus healing physical and emotional wounds.

Esteban Pando

Esteban started traveling abroad in 2007 as a musician. Finding himself always attracted to the sea, in 2013 he decided to settle in the Mayan Riviera and develop his passion for water. Continuing with this development he moved to Utila, Honduras in 2014 to become a dive master and a free diving instructor. Ever since he finished his training in 2015 he returned to his second home in Mexico and has been guiding people in open water using scuba gear and sharing his passion and knowledge of free diving with an ever growing population.

"A treasure box in paradise.."

I loved my experience with TribalYoga.. The classes were all different and unique, yet complimented each other beautifully. I felt challenged and motivated by all the teachers and learnt so much in such a short amount of time.

The location was very good, very small yoga classes, relaxed atmosphere, Acuatic Tulum staff helpful when they're available, room was clean and everything in working order.

"Wonderful place for a personal yoga retreat"

The loft was great - very spacious, bright and clean. There was a kitchen stocked with coffee and basics like salt, pepper, olive oil, etc., a large bed (note: with a very soft mattress), a pull out sofa, a patio with a hammock, a nice bathroom with a heavenly locally made Mayan honey shampoo and body wash.

I really enjoyed the beautiful yoga studio and went to every class offered during my stay, which meant morning vinyasa or flow class, sometimes followed by an iyengar class and then an evening restorative or iyengar class. It was nice to practice many different styles of yoga, and all the classes were taught by knowledgeable teachers who made an effort to create a warm community. The studio has everything you need and the props are plentiful and in good condition.

A bicycle rental is included and it was easy to bike 15 minutes to the public beach or rent a beach chair at a nearby hotel. The bike ride back for evening class was always shady and a good way to warm up for restorative poses.

This was an ideal way to have a solo vacation because it was easy to do my own thing, as well as meet other travelers. Also, Joanne, the owner, is a gem of a human being. Every single interaction with her added a brightness to the day. You can tell she is thoughtful about every detail and attentive to any concern. I highly recommend Tribal Yoga and hope to return to again.

"Excellent teachers, beautiful apartment"

The yoga retreat was amazing. The teachers are really well trained and know how to adapt postures to your possibilities (definitely not what I sometimes call the "lululemon yoga babe teacher type"). The apartment was beautiful, super comfy bed, and had a kitchen. We cooked most of the time ourselves, there's a supermarket across the street so we could get plenty of fruit and veggies. There are tons of restaurants in case you don't want to cook.

"a beautiful and chill vacation"

I really enjoyed the staff at Acuatic Tulum, they were very helpful and friendly. There were different yoga classes and instructors each day, the variety was very welcome. The location is on a main street between the beach and town so it made it easy to get to both. It is close to a vegetarian restaurant called Co.con Amor that was an easy and delicious spot to get to. I hope to make it back for another week get-away.

"An amazing stay in Tulum!"

Joanne was an excellent host. She checked to make sure everything was ok thought my stay, and gave great suggestions about what to do. I loved the yoga, snorkeling, and my beautiful room below the yoga studio. I also was surprised by the rooftop deck area! Beautiful to count the stars at night. This place is in a great location between the downtown Tulum center and the beach.

"Thoughtfulness expressed in myriad ways"

My accommodation was beautiful, full of natural light and fresh air. The hammock on the patio lulled me to a long nap every afternoon.

The basket of fruit, the jug of potable water, the canister of coffee all conveyed a thoughtful hospitality not commonly experienced in other tourist settings.

The teachers were light-hearted and kind, yet I learned a great deal about alignment and was able to try poses I had not thought possible.

The use of the bikes to roam the neighborhood was again an expression of thoughtfulness.

I loved the the space the location and the people and Joanne her husband everything about it. It's exactly what I needed. A large room with a full kitchen, my own little getaway hammock in a private terrace, The studio located right next to my room where I could use the space at any time if there were no classes being held.

The location was perfect, 15 minute bike ride to the public or hotel beaches and 10 minute walk to town. A supermarket no more than a 3 minute walk across the street as well as a few restaurants next door but not so close that there is a flurry of people around.

The bed was so comfortable and having the option of air conditioning is a plus especially when your coming back from the beach and am need of it.

The aquatic scuba, snorkeling store below was a treat as I didn't have to go anywhere if I wanted to take a special dive.

Joanne made it so welcoming that she catered to each of her guests needs and even organized a Telmezcal ceremony for us to attend. When I arrived she had offered to take me around town and show me special places to eat. She introduced me to another single guest and we wound up spending the whole time exploring together.

I'm planning on returning again in February.

"Relaxing, inspirational stay! Highly recommend!!"

I found this to be the perfect spot for yogis that are looking for a laid-back and less touristy vibe. Tulum is a great sized city where anything is accessible by bike. Joanne is wonderful and gave great recommendations for places to visit, to eat, and to relax. The yoga classes and instructors were great as well. In the few days we were there, we tried 4 different kinds of yoga (including Iyengar) and experienced our first sound bath. Truly a wonderful experience and I cannot wait to visit Tribal Tulum again soon!

"Amazing! "

Everything is perfect here.. Yoga classes, the loft, the location, beaches, the town.. I am so glad I picked this place. This is exactly what I need in vacation.

Tribal Yoga is a beautiful studio surrounded by trees and birds. Teachers are all great and staff there are friendly and helpful.

The location is perfect, closed to the biggest supermarket in the area and everything else is pretty much accessible with a bike which is included if you stay at the loft. The room is clean, has kitchen and AC.. simple yet beautifully decorated.

I enjoyed every moment while I was there. Thank you very much Joanne, Orlando, Leif, Esteban, Marianne! I can't wait to come back and stay with you again!

"Space for the soul"

There are so many wonderful aspects about Tribal Yoga Acuatic Lofts. Firstly, it's located in the middle of everything- short distance to center of town, beach, ruins, cenotes, restaurants, bars, cenotes, etc. Diving, snorkeling, seeing ruins, visiting the biosphere, going to a Text Mezcal, and having so many different kinds of yoga are all offered here. The most special aspect of this place is really the kindness and care of the staff and the owners. Meeting and spending time with each of them daily makes this place feel like a second home. The yoga instructors are fantastic too. The positive energy place is embracing and soothing. It stands out for me as those I have met, who work and come to stay, have made me want to be a better person. That doesn't usually happen when on holiday. I'm forever grateful.

"Amazing solo retreat"

This was a perfect last-minute solo getaway and first trip to Tulum. I booked 4 nights at the Acuatic Lofts and have nothing but amazing things to say about Joanne (the owner of the studio & lofts) who was so gracious and welcoming. She even drove one of my fellow yoga classmates & her husband to a local honey shop in the town over (the same shop that provides the shampoo & body soap in the lofts), and then we had an impromptu dip in one of the local, smaller cenotes.

The location of the lofts is also really convenient, as it's the middle point btwn the town & the beach (short 15 min bike ride - and the rental is included). The yoga classes in the studio were just a short flight up, and the dive shop downstairs was great too (you get a discount when staying in the lofts & I recommend the snorkeling trip to Dos Ojos Cenote).

All in all, I highly recommend booking a retreat here & I hope I can come back again!

"the blessings of Tulum"

My visit to Tulum was a very sweet and rich experience. I felt very welcomed, safe and held by the folks at Tribal Tulum. The facilities are beautiful. The People are so warm and heart felt. The yoga instruction was beautifully paired with the Free Diving instruction. The blending of the two experiences, with their common thread of the breath, was brilliant. Joanne and Esteban both brought so many little touches of care and wisdom to their instruction and guidance. I feel very blessed to have meet them. It was a moment of a life time.

"Home away from home!"

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Joanne with a fresh cup of delicious coffee. She made me feel at home right away!

Accommodations: The room was beautiful and stocked up with fresh fruit and water. The room was also cleaned regularly. Joanne also provides a bike for your stay which quickly becomes your best friend.

They also have some of the best scuba and free diving instructors which I wish I had tried if I was staying longer.

Yoga: I tried to attend at least 1 yoga class a day and found there is much variety and something for everyone. You can attend even if you’re a beginner. I liked the incorporation of essential oils and more breathing techniques than I’m used to.

The staff: Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I found Leif provided me with the most information and was very cheerful. They had a new member named Malin who is helping out for a little while. She was willing to travel along with me to some bars and cenote when she wasn’t working.

Location: The retreat is in a convenient location. It doesn’t take too long to bike to the beach or even some cenote. I biked to 2 nearby cenote during my visit which were beautiful. There are also some delicious restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Tulum: Tulum itself is gorgeous, safe and I’d definitely revisit. This loft fits the Tulum vibe of positivity and slow living perfectly!

Thank you all for making my first solo vacation wonderful 😊

"A wonderful yoga community"

Tribal Yoga is an amazing place to get away from the chaos of everyday life and immerse yourself in Yoga and Tulum. You will be challenged but you will also have a lot of fun along the way. The teachers are world class and the class sizes are small and intimate. Joanne goes above and beyond to ensure that your time there is exceptional. I highly recommend this retreat to all yogis of any level and style.

Rooms are huge and light, comfortable and clean. The location is perfect, about 10 min from the beach by bike.

Yoga studio was right next to my room (Loft 4) super easy to just wake up and get there, people are coming from different hotels for the classes and have to ride back. Yoga teachers are amazing, tried some new for me practices during staying and was surprised how flexible you can be just by following the correct steps. Did diving in a cenotes for the first time ever, it was great. Would highly recommend this place!

"A perfectly restorative retreat; just heaven "

The apartments are just lovely, lots of light, lovely calm colours, sumptuous bed linen and divine cosmetics made by local bee keepers.

There are yoga classes for all preferences from hard core Ayenga to gentle Yin and all that flows in between. The teachers are excellent and accommodate novices just as well as experienced practitioners.

The location is perfect, on the edge of a gentle and authentic Mexican town with lots of restaurants serving local and vegetarian cuisine. The studio is also quite near to the big supermarket which has a wonderful range of everything you might want for self catering, including gf produce. We arrived to find a lovely bowl of fruit and chilled coconuts as well as excellent tea and coffee.

There is so much to do locally beyond yoga. We went snorkelling in two different cenotes with a lovely guide and went on a fabulous trip into the ecosphere near by. The archaeology is also fascinating.

The studio is located on the cycle path which is just a 15 minute flat cycle to the beach and the more fancy bars, restaurants and shops. Personally I preferred not staying in the main tourist zone but having easy access to those facilities from time to time.

There is quite enough for people who are not into yoga to do and who knows they may even get into some gentle relaxation in a hammoc if not in the yoga studio.

Above all the staff are so lovely. Joanne could not have been more kind and helpful. Thank you. Xxx

"Counting the days until I can return! Excellent retreat!"

I loved the location, the yoga classes, the diving, the accommodation, but most of all the people who make Tribal Tulum and acuatic Tulum. Joanne is an absolute gem and you can tell she is dedicated to giving everyone the best experience and practice they can have. Leif who took me out for diving was so friendly and I felt incredibly relaxed and comfortable and have now been bitten by the diving bug! I took at least one yoga class per day and they were all different, all instructors had different ways of teaching but all nurturing and I was very impressed. I made lots of friends and had the perfect balance of improving my yoga practice and fitness level while also getting to experience the beauty of this region of Mexico and meet new people. The location is great, within walking distance of the city centre and the cycle path makes it all so easy to get to the beach as well. I am a vegetarian as well and ate like a Mayan queen ha ha! The food was incredible! I also have to say, I am thrilled I never had to buy a single plastic water bottle as there was an endless supply of drinking water in each room. I will be going back for sure and bringing friends as this retreat is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for such an unforgettable adventure! Love, peace and Namaste

Joanne (owner and instructor) is an angel! She makes you feel at home, helps you with recommendations of things to do around the area. I came to Tulum to heal. "Release Restore and Rejuvenate "

For self celebration of right foot hardware removal, and cessation of chronic pain following 3 surgeries in 2 years, I traveled alone to Tribal Tulum. I felt safe and well cared for! I attended 12 yoga classes in 6 days--5 different, fabulous instructors helped create a peaceful and nourishing practice. My last class ended with Flavio playing amazing beautiful music from his flute, a stunning magical ending. I also did 7 dives in 6 days, 6 in the amazing Cenote caves and 1 beautiful reef dive. I tried free-diving one day and quickly learned that I wanted my tank back, I am thankful for the experience. The dive guides and all the staff who cared for me were well-trained and highly qualified. I had my own bike for the week and could venture out as much as I wanted. My transportation was well-planned and seemless. I will be returning!

"Worth a second trip!"

I stayed at Tribal Tulum last year for 7 days and liked it so much I went back again this year. It has many wonderful teachers, each with their own style. Classes are fresh and fun, and never boring. You are able to pick the classes that suit you, and challenge yourself at the same time. The schedule leaves you the freedom to explore the town and enjoy the beach. I especially enjoyed being able to bike to wherever I wanted to go.

The accommodations are very comfortable, with all the conveniences you could ask for!

Tribal Tulum is central: to town, beach, food, grocery store. You’re literally on the bike path. The yoga was awesome and I can be critical. My non yogi husband even went to class solo!!!

The staff are super nice and helpful. Joanne was a fountain of info and quite the hostess. We stayed onsite. It was clean, bright, all we needed was there for us. ESP the bikes! You won’t regret the trip at all.

"A truly wonderful time"

I had an incredibly relaxing, fun few days here. The accommodations are beautiful (my room was more spacious than my little Brooklyn apartment!), and I had everything I needed. Joanne and her team are gracious and generous hosts, and they were available to answer any and all questions. Every yoga class I took was excellent. The level of instruction is exceptional, and there is a variety of yoga styles offered, which allowed me to try some new things (Iyengar and Yin). It's easy to get around on a bike, as the town is bike-friendly and the roads are very flat, so I loved having a bike to use! The nearby beaches are gorgeous, there are a ton of great places to eat, and there are some awesome cenotes within biking distance too. I only wish I could have stayed longer! Guess I'll have to return...!

JoAnne was a terrific host. She helped arrange my transportation to/from Cancun airport which greatly simplified my visit. The loft apartment was really a beautiful space and convenient to the studio. The variety of yoga teachers made the classes very interesting. The furnished bicycle gave me the ability to get to/from the beach/town/ruins on my own schedule for free. I took a trip to a cenote with JoAnne on Sunday afternoon and it was so beautiful. I booked a one week yoga retreat at tribal yoga via bookyogaretreats.com.

As it was my first time to travel to Mexico I had some questions and send an inquiry to Joanne. She was more than helpful and answered always right away, so I felt very welcome and safe.

When I got there with a transfer, Joanne was there to greet me. Such a warm welcome :-) you need to know that the lofts and yoga school is within a building with a big sign for acuatic diving school on it.

It was such a lovely loft (no 4 as far as I remember). Very spacious, modern, clean and lively decorated. Joanne had prepared some water and some fruits for me. There was a cute balcony with a hammock, which I feel in love with. Never feel asleep faster than there :-) the room had three ventilator and an ac as well. The kitchen offered everything you needed to prepare a proper meal.

Lift no 4 is next to the yoga studio itself, which is more beautiful than on the pictures. It's a different energy when it's sunset or sunrise, but always stunning to join a class at each time.

I tried to take part in every class theme, but after the third day my whole body was sore so I took a break.

The classes with Daria have been the most inspiring ones. She is a great teacher and takes really care if each student. Roll and release changed a lot in my practice. Her music she played lead me to different stages and caught me.

I had the opportunity to join some classes with mindy. Challenging, fast, really good and the most beautiful singing voice I have ever heard.

Ivengar yoga with Eugenia was challenging, very good and exact. You really feel every posture and how to move into the right posture. I couldn't believe it when I hung upside down on the wall, keeping my whole weight in that posture for more than one breath.

Right next to the lofts are a lot if restaurants and a huge super market. Joanne and all her employees helped me with every question I got, (finding the post office, best hammocks to buy, best tacos to eat,...)

I booked a fabulous tour to the cenotes with acuatic diving, incredible to snorkel there. A must do when you are in the area and we had so much fun.

I could have stayed there for a couple of more weeks. Felt home right away and explored whole tulum with a rental bike which I got from Joanne. I lost one pedal and got a new bike some hours later. Perfect service!

There are always some dogs around and a little cute cat. Just adorable.

I enjoyed every single second and have been so sad to leave.

I will come back again and get my warrior on.

If you meet Joanne you will immediately know that she is a special woman, calm, lovable, laughing and joking. I didn't finished her book yet, but I am very impressed already.

Thank you tulum, thank you aquatic, thank you to all teachers to have me, thank you Joanne and her employees and thanks for the peace I took with me to Germany :-)
