Joanne Barry

American Aerobic Association International / International Sports Medicine Association (Vinyasa Yoga)

Joanne has been sharing her humor, sense of vitality, and yoga practice with people in Tulum since 2006. Her practice is based on Vinyasa flow tailored to the needs of her students. She combines her yoga with a lifetime of body knowledge developed as a competitive athlete. Her life philosophy of cherishing each moment and oneself is evident in each of her practices, reminding others that each breath and each moment is a gift. Joanne is accredited to teach yoga by the AAAI / ISMA (American Aerobic Association International / International Sports Medicine Association).

Chelsea McGettigan

Yoga Dicha Yoga Alliance RYT 200 (Yoga)

Chelsea is a long-time California transplant who adores her (sun-safe) beach life. She began her practice at Moxie Yoga & Fitness in the Mission District of San Francisco and completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training at Yoga Dicha in Tulum, Mexico. She is passionate about arm balances, good food, and her dog, Lulu. Her Ashtanga-inspired Vinyasa classes are energizing sequences focused on safe alignment and intentional movement. Though she is thrilled by challenges, she believes there is incredible strength in being gentle with oneself.

Daria Hines

Alive Yoga Yoga Alliance RYT 300 (Yoga)

Daria found yoga more than 12 years ago and it has helped to heal her body, mind, and heart along the way of past injury. She has studied with Shiva Rea, Mathew Cohen, and Jorgen Christiansson in California and received her 300-hour Yoga Alliance certification from Daniel Aaron of radiantly Alive Yoga in Ubud, Bali. She teaches Restorative, Yin, and Children's yoga at Tribal.

Eugenia Russian

(Iyengar Yoga)

Eugenia received her certification in Hatha yoga in 2006 and since 2009, her study and teaching are dedicated to the Iyengar method. She came to Tulum in 2014. In early 2015, she completed her grade II certification in the Iyengar tradition of yoga. She constantly updates her knowledge and teaching skills about the Iyengar method through workshops and seminars. Eugenia teaches Iyengar yoga five times a week at Tribal and one Saturday a month, she teaches a restorative Iyengar class. Tribal Yoga has wall-fitted ropes that are used in Eugenia’s classes to perfect the alignment in the asanas.

Flavio Lopez

Flavio grew up in Mexico City with a passion for innovative ideas and extreme sports and, like many people, he began practicing yoga to cure an injured ankle in 2001 while he was studying industrial engineering. He was fascinated at the way the human body mimicked the industrial machines he was studying and through his Hatha yoga practice, he correlated the repair of his body to a technical repair like the restoration of a machine. Flavio was certified to teach in 2011 and shortly after, he came to the Mexican Caribbean and Tulum to find more yoga and balance in his life.

Iris Campion

Ayurvedic Institute (Ayurveda Practitioner)

Iris completed her Sivananda yoga teacher training in 2001 in the Bahamas and has been teaching Hatha yoga ever since. She provides treatments, classes, and consultations in Ayurveda since graduating from California College of Ayurveda in 2005. She completed additional Ayurvedic studies at the Ayurvedic Institute in 2007 in New Mexico. Yoga and Ayurveda provided profound relief for Iris from chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia from a young age.

Ricardo Castro

Ricardo is from Northern Mexico, a small town called Tampico. He developed his love for bodily movement and the interaction between body and mind through martial arts, loving both the traditional aspect and the competition. He began yoga to improve his alignment in competitions and immediately fell in love with its focus on balancing body and mind. He is new to teaching yoga but an old soul with years in martial arts and the mind-body connection. He received his training in 2015 in Vinyasa flow at Yoga Dicha in Tulum, where he now lives.

Mariana Borbolla

Mariana moved to Tulum just three years ago from Guadalajara, Mexico. She studied yoga in Playa del Carmen and received her certification in Vinyasa flow from Alan Montaño. Developing a dedicated and constant practice showed her the internal and external changes yoga brought about in herself. Subsequently, she decided to share the yoga practice as a teacher. Mariana shows her students how yoga can help them live less accelerated lives and be in the moment, thus healing physical and emotional wounds.

Alex Alvaez Enriquez

Alex Alvarez is the owner and founder of Acuatic Tulum and with Joanne, Tribal Yoga. He is one of the foremost divers and explorers in the Yucatan Peninsula and knows the area literally from the inside out. He will make your trip the most memorable ever by sharing his knowledge and expertise every step of your way.

Sarah Miller

Sarah started her yoga journey as most people have, through injury. She just wanted the pain in her knees to finally go away. Yoga gave that to her and she was so excited that she decided to help other people find the same relief. Sarah completed her 200-hour training at the Yoga Village in California and discovered Bhakti yoga, a practice that includes chanting to Krishna. She found that this musical and upbeat practice helped her release unhealthy habits and negative thought patterns and she shares these methods and all things about Bhakti within the structure of Vinyasa flow.

I loved the the space the location and the people and Joanne her husband everything about it. It's exactly what I needed. A large room with a full kitchen, my own little getaway hammock in a private terrace, The studio located right next to my room where I could use the space at any time if there were no classes being held.

The location was perfect, 15 minute bike ride to the public or hotel beaches and 10 minute walk to town. A supermarket no more than a 3 minute walk across the street as well as a few restaurants next door but not so close that there is a flurry of people around.

The bed was so comfortable and having the option of air conditioning is a plus especially when your coming back from the beach and am need of it.

The aquatic scuba, snorkeling store below was a treat as I didn't have to go anywhere if I wanted to take a special dive.

Joanne made it so welcoming that she catered to each of her guests needs and even organized a Telmezcal ceremony for us to attend. When I arrived she had offered to take me around town and show me special places to eat. She introduced me to another single guest and we wound up spending the whole time exploring together.

I'm planning on returning again in February.

I found nothing negative about this place seriously. I loved every part of my experience here.

I found this to be the perfect spot for yogis that are looking for a laid-back and less touristy vibe. Tulum is a great sized city where anything is accessible by bike. Joanne is wonderful and gave great recommendations for places to visit, to eat, and to relax. The yoga classes and instructors were great as well. In the few days we were there, we tried 4 different kinds of yoga (including Iyengar) and experienced our first sound bath. Truly a wonderful experience and I cannot wait to visit Tribal Tulum again soon!

I was under the impression that the loft would have a full kitchen, but it had a sink and small fridge as well as the essentials like plates, cups, and knives. Also, due to the humidity and abundant greenery, there were lots and lots of mosquitoes. I would come prepared with breathable long sleeves and pants as well as lots of bug spray. The place also doesn't have a pool or beach access, but the beach is very accessible by bike.

I loved my room, it was beautifully decorated and very spacious! It is in a quiet area, and only a bike ride away from the beaches and shopping streets. The classes were guided by lovely and knowledgable teachers. The vibe of the place and people was great !! Highly recommend it !!!

The shower had very poor water pressure, it was a difficult and long procedure to be able to get the shampoo off.

Tribal Yoga Tulum is an incredible, peaceful place to spend your days in Tulum. The provide you with a stay at their clean, spacious, modern loft and offer different classes throughout the day. The yoga classes are professional and varied, with different levels and styles for you to try.

Joanne and her team are a happy, warm bunch and they definitely made me miss them as soon as I got on my plane home.

    Highly recommended!

Everything is perfect here.. Yoga classes, the loft, the location, beaches, the town.. I am so glad I picked this place. This is exactly what I need in vacation.

Tribal Yoga is a beautiful studio surrounded by trees and birds. Teachers are all great and staff there are friendly and helpful.

The location is perfect, closed to the biggest supermarket in the area and everything else is pretty much accessible with a bike which is included if you stay at the loft. The room is clean, has kitchen and AC.. simple yet beautifully decorated.

I enjoyed every moment while I was there. Thank you very much Joanne, Orlando, Leif, Esteban, Marianne! I can't wait to come back and stay with you again!

    Love, Peace and Om...

Mosquitos! but it's nothing to do with the studio or the loft- the room has mosquito screens.

I had an incredibly relaxing, fun few days here. The accommodations are beautiful (my room was more spacious than my little Brooklyn apartment!), and I had everything I needed. Joanne and her team are gracious and generous hosts, and they were available to answer any and all questions. Every yoga class I took was excellent. The level of instruction is exceptional, and there is a variety of yoga styles offered, which allowed me to try some new things (Iyengar and Yin). It's easy to get around on a bike, as the town is bike-friendly and the roads are very flat, so I loved having a bike to use! The nearby beaches are gorgeous, there are a ton of great places to eat, and there are some awesome cenotes within biking distance too. I only wish I could have stayed longer! Guess I'll have to return...!

The yoga instructors and the location as well as the energy of the space was very nice. Great experience for growing deeper in the yoga practice.

The shower being cold and not being able to get warm:hot water and not being able to change out towels. Bikes could use some work as not many work well. The magnet session I thought was included evidently wasn't. It was scheduled then cancelled.

There are so many wonderful aspects about Tribal Yoga Acuatic Lofts. Firstly, it's located in the middle of everything- short distance to center of town, beach, ruins, cenotes, restaurants, bars, cenotes, etc. Diving, snorkeling, seeing ruins, visiting the biosphere, going to a Text Mezcal, and having so many different kinds of yoga are all offered here. The most special aspect of this place is really the kindness and care of the staff and the owners. Meeting and spending time with each of them daily makes this place feel like a second home. The yoga instructors are fantastic too. The positive energy place is embracing and soothing. It stands out for me as those I have met, who work and come to stay, have made me want to be a better person. That doesn't usually happen when on holiday. I'm forever grateful.

There are no negatives whatsoever in this place. In Tulum, bring some bug spray though as mosquitos are quite social.

JoAnne was a terrific host. She helped arrange my transportation to/from Cancun airport which greatly simplified my visit. The loft apartment was really a beautiful space and convenient to the studio. The variety of yoga teachers made the classes very interesting. The furnished bicycle gave me the ability to get to/from the beach/town/ruins on my own schedule for free. I took a trip to a cenote with JoAnne on Sunday afternoon and it was so beautiful. I can't imagine how this trip could have gotten any better.

I really liked the location of the hotel and everything it included. I got a nice big room with a water dispenser, fridge, and private bathroom. The rooms are on the second floor and the yoga studio is on the third floor. I really like the variety of classes that were available.

When booking this "retreat" keep in mind that it is an "a la carte" retreat. Therefore, it isn't really a retreat. If you are looking for a traditional structure retreat, this is not it. However, if you want to relax, do some yoga, but also want time to explore the many wonders of Tulum, then this would be good for you.

One of the workshops was nice that was offered.

No hot water and a/c for a few days. Yoga was not a priority on this retreat. It should be on an air B and B , not on a yoga retreat website. It is no where near the beach. It is basically 3 miles from the beach and the yoga times are catered to the locals, not the guests. It was a problem even getting an extra blanket for my friend.

Two Thumbs Up!! I loved my stay at Tribal Yoga Tulum! I wish I had booked for longer because it took me four days to get over the fear of riding my bike. But Marianna talked me through it and I managed to wobble around town. The dive shop offers snorkeling tours of the cenotes. We went to Dos Ojos and it was amazing!! I don't know how to describe it really but it's like a fresh waterway in a cave and it's even a bit chilly. Intrepid people actually scuba dive for miles underground in them! And just for the record, Joanne's partner, Alex, discovered the oldest human remains in the Americas in one of the cenotes. How cool is that?? I noticed that one review complained about noise but the windows do close and you have AC. And if you don't hear a rooster crowing, you're probably not in Mexico. I slept like a baby. I hardly used the AC because there was always a breeze. The bed was gigantic, would easily sleep a family of four. Nice fridge and kitchen area and the grocery store is very close. I got a chance to practice my very limited Spanish. I took most of the classes offered. I highly recommend the Iyengar one taught by Eugenia. It's all about precision and alignment and you can even hang upside down against the wall. I loved the vinyasa flow classes and took my first yin yoga class ever. Joanne was out of town for most of my stay but I was lucky to meet her on my last day. She runs a top notch place. She has surrounded herself with an awesome staff, all very welcoming, helpful, and knowledgeable. Would I do it again? Hell, yeah! I'm serious about yoga but didn't want a place where you meditate 18 hours a day. This was just what I needed--quality yoga with lots of free time to enjoy the area.

Owners, People and Teachers were great. I appreciated them a lot, and they were helpful when I was in trouble. 5 Stars.

Honestly I would however say that I had real trouble sleeping, as the place was noisy (roosters, construction, parties, dogs barking, trucks, vendors with speakers and horns). I would suggest they arrange for windows to be closable in the rooms and toilets. I could make a significant difference at no-fortune cost. I also noted that the price of the room was higher than other places in the city.

The city of Tulum is wonderful. The beach, ambiance, culture are so great I might very likely come back.

  • Deborah Bradford Canada

    BookYogaRetreats website

Exceeded my expectations. Joanne was warm and welcoming. My room was spacious and comfortable - king bed, huge bright windows, kitchenette ( with a blender!) and seating. Cool water shower. The area is very quiet ( for Mexico). No clubs or loud bars close by. Lots of great food in the area including a vegan ice cream truck, and vegetarian place (2 min.) Huge grocery store (10 min.) and a 30 min. walk to the beach. Or use their bikes to get around. There are 2-3 yoga classes a day with all the equipment you need. Classes are small 6 - 12 people. The teachers were really welcoming. Classes are in English. The vibe is laid back, cool, and friendly. Think natural environment, soft incense and gentle music.

The little buses (collectivo) connecting Tulum with other towns, denotes, beaches, and ruins are within walking distance and there are lots of really cheap taxis. I joined the dive shop downstairs for an amazing snorkeling trip. There is so much to see and do in the area, and none of it is expensive. I wish I had booked for longer, and will certainly return.

I loved my yoga retreat at Tribal Tulum. I stayed in one of the apartments next to the studio. It was comfortable, clean and nicely decorated. I loved the convenience of just walking upstairs to the studio. The yoga instructors were all really good and each class I took was unique. Each morning I took a 90-minute class, then spent the afternoon at the beach and then returned for a 90-minute evening class before dinner. It was perfect.Everyone at Tribal Tulum was helpful. I highly recommend this place. I'd give it a 10.

My sister and I spent six days (five nights) at Tribal Yoga Tulum. We loved it! The room was spacious, new and modern, very attractive and included everything we wanted including kitchen facilities and an outside deck. We were on the second floor and enjoyed a lovely view of trees. The room had windows on three sides so we had a wonderful cross breeze and only needed to use the air conditioning occasionally.

We made breakfast and lunch in our room and enjoyed eating at local cafes for our evening mealsThe day we arrived, Joanne had fruit and coffee available.

The yoga classes were WONDERFUL. Each teacher provided something unique.

We appreciated that bicycles were provided. The bike ride to the beach took about 15 minutes and is an easy ride because of the wide, cement bike paths.

I highly recommend Tribal Yoga Tulum. Joanne and all of the staff are very welcoming and friendly.

I booked a one week yoga retreat at tribal yoga via bookyogaretreats.com.

As it was my first time to travel to Mexico I had some questions and send an inquiry to Joanne. She was more than helpful and answered always right away, so I felt very welcome and safe.

When I got there with a transfer, Joanne was there to greet me. Such a warm welcome :-) you need to know that the lofts and yoga school is within a building with a big sign for acuatic diving school on it.

It was such a lovely loft (no 4 as far as I remember). Very spacious, modern, clean and lively decorated. Joanne had prepared some water and some fruits for me. There was a cute balcony with a hammock, which I feel in love with. Never feel asleep faster than there :-) the room had three ventilator and an ac as well. The kitchen offered everything you needed to prepare a proper meal.

Lift no 4 is next to the yoga studio itself, which is more beautiful than on the pictures. It's a different energy when it's sunset or sunrise, but always stunning to join a class at each time.

I tried to take part in every class theme, but after the third day my whole body was sore so I took a break.

The classes with Daria have been the most inspiring ones. She is a great teacher and takes really care if each student. Roll and release changed a lot in my practice. Her music she played lead me to different stages and caught me.

I had the opportunity to join some classes with mindy. Challenging, fast, really good and the most beautiful singing voice I have ever heard.

Ivengar yoga with Eugenia was challenging, very good and exact. You really feel every posture and how to move into the right posture. I couldn't believe it when I hung upside down on the wall, keeping my whole weight in that posture for more than one breath.

Right next to the lofts are a lot if restaurants and a huge super market. Joanne and all her employees helped me with every question I got, (finding the post office, best hammocks to buy, best tacos to eat,...)

I booked a fabulous tour to the cenotes with acuatic diving, incredible to snorkel there. A must do when you are in the area and we had so much fun.

I could have stayed there for a couple of more weeks. Felt home right away and explored whole tulum with a rental bike which I got from Joanne. I lost one pedal and got a new bike some hours later. Perfect service!

There are always some dogs around and a little cute cat. Just adorable.

I enjoyed every single second and have been so sad to leave.

I will come back again and get my warrior on.

If you meet Joanne you will immediately know that she is a special woman, calm, lovable, laughing and joking. I didn't finished her book yet, but I am very impressed already.

Thank you tulum, thank you aquatic, thank you to all teachers to have me, thank you Joanne and her employees and thanks for the peace I took with me to Germany :-)
