During this retreat, you will stay either in a single, double, or triple occupancy. The first two nights will be at a centrally-located hotel in Christchurch, three nights on a high-country farm in Craigieburn Valley, one night in a unique backpacker lodge in the Rata forests at the west coast, and four nights at an eco-resort in the heart of the Golden Bay. All rooms in Christchurch include ensuite bathrooms. For the rest of the journey, bathroom facilities will be shared among you and your cabin or cottage-mates.

Single occupancy option

The single occupancy option is a two nights stay in a central Christchurch studio, three nights in a single room in a guest cottage at the high-country farm, one night in a single room in a forest lodge, and four nights in a single room in a cottage at Golden Bay.

Double occupancy option A

The double occupancy option A is a two nights stay in a twin-share central Christchurch studio, three nights in a twin-share bedroom in a guest cottage at the high-country farm, one night in a twin-share bedroom in a forest lodge, and four nights in a twin-share bedroom in a cottage at the Golden Bay.

Double occupancy option B

The double occupancy option B is a two nights stay in in a twin-share central studio at Christchurch, three nights in a twin-share room in the shearers' quarters at the high-country farm, one night in a family-style six beds shared room in a forest lodge, and four nights in a twin-share bedroom cottage at Golden Bay.

Triple occupancy option

The triple occupancy option is a two nights stay in a triple-share one-bedroom apartment in central Christchurch, three nights in a triple-share room in the shearers' quarters at the high-country farm, one night in a family-style six-bed shared room in a forest lodge, and four nights in a triple-share bedroom cottage at Golden Bay.

During this retreat you will spend two nights at Christchurch, three nights on a high-country farm in Craigieburn Valley, one night in the Rata forests of the west coast, and four nights at the heart of the Golden Bay.

Day one

On arrival day at Christchurch, there will be a room waiting for you where you can rest, unwind, and fully arrive. If you arrive early enough, you can take the afternoon to tour around and experience the creativity and culture of this vibrant city in transformation. The next morning, you will enjoy breakfast on your own or with fellow yogis in one of the downtown cafes. At 10:00, the group will meet up to begin the journey.

Day two

During the second day, you will set off from the hotel and do a group orientation in the peaceful botanical gardens. After lunch, you will travel inland to the Craigieburn Valley and the epic landscapes of the South Island. In the foothills of the Southern Alps you will settle in to a room at a historic high country station and hear the story of the farm. Later, you will have an evening yoga session outside against the beautiful mountainous backdrop, followed by a buffet dinner.

Day three

During the third day, you will start the day with a morning yoga practice and breakfast, before driving to Kura Twhiti, Castle Hill, to explore the natural limestone rock sculptures. The name means 'treasure from a distant land' and the area is home to some of the rarest and most endangered plants in the region, and is of special significance to the local Mori iwi trib. You will travel to the nearby Cave Stream Reserve for a picnic lunch, gentle walk, and a journey through the cave stream for the adventurous. Back at the farm, you will be able to relax for some free time before the evening yoga practice and the dinner.

Day four

During the fourth day, after a morning yoga practice, you will move closer to the sky, traveling through Arthur's Pass National Park and a five hour hike up to Temple Basin where you will enjoy the soaring views and a picnic spread before returning to the farm to relax and unwind. You will finish the day with an evening yoga session and dinner.

Day five

During the fifth day, after an early morning yoga practice and breakfast, you will travel over the pass to the wild and lush west coast, where you will explore the Punakaiki pancake rocks and the blowholes. You will visit a local restaurant for a delicious lunch and then venture into the nearby glow worm caves, before returning to stay by the beach in Punakaiki in cabins surrounded by subtropical palms and ancient rata forest.

Day six

During the sixth day, you will start the day with a sunrise yoga practice on the beach and a simple homemade breakfast before heading north along one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the country. In the mountain pass of Saint Arnaud, you will stop for a healthy lunch by the clear waters of Lake Rotoiti, where swimming will be an option, before continuing to the eco-resort in Kaiteriteri, famous for its golden sand beaches. There will be some downtime to settle in and enjoy the sauna, spa, and pools with sea and bush views. After a delicious dinner, there will be opportunity for a Restorative yoga evening practice at the resort.

Day seven

During the seventh day, you will have time to breathe, explore, and relax with a morning yoga practice and a healthy breakfast followed by free time to soak in the sun by the pools, enjoy a massage, or take a walk at the nearby tracks. The lunch at the restaurant will be followed by more time to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, before an afternoon yoga session, a delicious dinner, and a free evening.

Day eight

During the eighth day, after an early morning yoga practice and a healthy breakfast, you will go to the water to practice some sea kayaking through the secret bays and golden beaches of Abel Tasman National Park. You will share a picnic lunch on the shore, before following the Abel Tasman coastal track by foot, as it meanders its way through native bush, fern gullies and small secluded beaches. You will get back to the resort in time to relax before an evening yoga session, a delicious dinner, and a relaxing evening.

Day nine

During the ninth day, you will travel to the Golden Bay and some of the most special places in Aotearoa. After a morning practice and breakfast, you will travel over the Takaka Hill to the spectacular landscapes of Wharariki beach. Windswept, majestic and wild, this place is of great spiritual significance to the Mori, and traditionally seen as the departure point for spirits, where wind, ocean, and land meet. After a lunch among the hills and a chance of seeing local seals, you will travel to the nearby Te Waikoropup Springs, a lush freshwater spring of amazing clarity. These waters are a sacred place and traditionally used for healing, seen as the source of life and wellbeing, and a place of blessing for travelers. After absorbing the special quality of the springs, you will share dinner in Takaka, well known for its organic and delicious food. Later you will have your final yoga practice back at the resort.

Day ten

During the tenth day, after a delicious breakfast, you will travel through the rolling wine country to Blenheim, where you will stop for a delicious lunch and then board the Coastal Pacific Scenic Railway, which hugs the South Island's east coast all the way back to Christchurch. Upon arrival, you will check back into the hotel and enjoy a final evening out on the town on your own or with fellow yogis.

Day eleven

  • On departure day you may fly home or continue your journey in New Zealand.

Yoga and meditation sessions

The asana classes emphasize alignment and subtle energetic components to facilitate a balanced mood and physical wellbeing. During the yoga sessions you can expect a mix of challenging, slowly flowing asanas as well as longer-held, strengthening poses, all designed to ground the body and lift the spirit. During the meditation sessions, you will utilize mindful self-inquiry, deeply restorative yoga Nidra, and breathing practices to sooth the nervous system and address unconscious mental habits that produce tension and discomfort.

This retreat will be held at three different locations in New Zealand, which are Christchurch, Craigieburn Valley, the Rata forests of the west coast, and at an eco-resort in the heart of the Golden Bay.

For this retreat, a vegetarian menu will be served on the journey. Nearly all of your meals are included in the cost of the trip. On a couple of occasions, between destinations, you will be stopping for lunch on the road. These meals will be ordered on your own and you are free to order what you like at those times, vegetarian or not. Cuisine plays an important role in any travel experience, and both the farm and the eco-resort are well-regarded for serving fresh, colorful, healthy meals. There will be also one night in a lodge that is self-catering and the staff of guides will prepare a home-cooked, love-filled feast for the group. Snacks and other items can be easily purchased in Christchurch before we set out on our journey. Also note that all accommodation includes access to a refrigerator if needed.

Exclusions

Meals at Christchurch before and after the journey, three lunches on the road between destinations, snacks, and drinks other that water or coffee are not included in this retreat.

For this retreat, you will enjoy plenty of free time to explore the surroundings, hike, kayak, or swim at the multiple beach locations during this trip.

Another option is to book your flight to arrive at the Auckland International Airport (AKL) and then book a domestic flight to the Christchurch International Airport (CHC).
