During this retreat you will spend two nights at Christchurch, three nights on a high-country farm in Craigieburn Valley, one night in the Rata forests of the west coast, and four nights at the heart of the Golden Bay.

Day one

On arrival day at Christchurch, there will be a room waiting for you where you can rest, unwind, and fully arrive. If you arrive early enough, you can take the afternoon to tour around and experience the creativity and culture of this vibrant city in transformation. The next morning, you will enjoy breakfast on your own or with fellow yogis in one of the downtown cafes. At 10:00, the group will meet up to begin the journey.

Day two

During the second day, you will set off from the hotel and do a group orientation in the peaceful botanical gardens. After lunch, you will travel inland to the Craigieburn Valley and the epic landscapes of the South Island. In the foothills of the Southern Alps you will settle in to a room at a historic high country station and hear the story of the farm. Later, you will have an evening yoga session outside against the beautiful mountainous backdrop, followed by a buffet dinner.

Day three

During the third day, you will start the day with a morning yoga practice and breakfast, before driving to Kura Twhiti, Castle Hill, to explore the natural limestone rock sculptures. The name means 'treasure from a distant land' and the area is home to some of the rarest and most endangered plants in the region, and is of special significance to the local Mori iwi trib. You will travel to the nearby Cave Stream Reserve for a picnic lunch, gentle walk, and a journey through the cave stream for the adventurous. Back at the farm, you will be able to relax for some free time before the evening yoga practice and the dinner.

Day four

During the fourth day, after a morning yoga practice, you will move closer to the sky, traveling through Arthur's Pass National Park and a five hour hike up to Temple Basin where you will enjoy the soaring views and a picnic spread before returning to the farm to relax and unwind. You will finish the day with an evening yoga session and dinner.

Day five

During the fifth day, after an early morning yoga practice and breakfast, you will travel over the pass to the wild and lush west coast, where you will explore the Punakaiki pancake rocks and the blowholes. You will visit a local restaurant for a delicious lunch and then venture into the nearby glow worm caves, before returning to stay by the beach in Punakaiki in cabins surrounded by subtropical palms and ancient rata forest.

Day six

During the sixth day, you will start the day with a sunrise yoga practice on the beach and a simple homemade breakfast before heading north along one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the country. In the mountain pass of Saint Arnaud, you will stop for a healthy lunch by the clear waters of Lake Rotoiti, where swimming will be an option, before continuing to the eco-resort in Kaiteriteri, famous for its golden sand beaches. There will be some downtime to settle in and enjoy the sauna, spa, and pools with sea and bush views. After a delicious dinner, there will be opportunity for a Restorative yoga evening practice at the resort.

Day seven

During the seventh day, you will have time to breathe, explore, and relax with a morning yoga practice and a healthy breakfast followed by free time to soak in the sun by the pools, enjoy a massage, or take a walk at the nearby tracks. The lunch at the restaurant will be followed by more time to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, before an afternoon yoga session, a delicious dinner, and a free evening.

Day eight

During the eighth day, after an early morning yoga practice and a healthy breakfast, you will go to the water to practice some sea kayaking through the secret bays and golden beaches of Abel Tasman National Park. You will share a picnic lunch on the shore, before following the Abel Tasman coastal track by foot, as it meanders its way through native bush, fern gullies and small secluded beaches. You will get back to the resort in time to relax before an evening yoga session, a delicious dinner, and a relaxing evening.

Day nine

During the ninth day, you will travel to the Golden Bay and some of the most special places in Aotearoa. After a morning practice and breakfast, you will travel over the Takaka Hill to the spectacular landscapes of Wharariki beach. Windswept, majestic and wild, this place is of great spiritual significance to the Mori, and traditionally seen as the departure point for spirits, where wind, ocean, and land meet. After a lunch among the hills and a chance of seeing local seals, you will travel to the nearby Te Waikoropup Springs, a lush freshwater spring of amazing clarity. These waters are a sacred place and traditionally used for healing, seen as the source of life and wellbeing, and a place of blessing for travelers. After absorbing the special quality of the springs, you will share dinner in Takaka, well known for its organic and delicious food. Later you will have your final yoga practice back at the resort.

Day ten

During the tenth day, after a delicious breakfast, you will travel through the rolling wine country to Blenheim, where you will stop for a delicious lunch and then board the Coastal Pacific Scenic Railway, which hugs the South Island's east coast all the way back to Christchurch. Upon arrival, you will check back into the hotel and enjoy a final evening out on the town on your own or with fellow yogis.

Day eleven

  • On departure day you may fly home or continue your journey in New Zealand.

Yoga and meditation sessions

The asana classes emphasize alignment and subtle energetic components to facilitate a balanced mood and physical wellbeing. During the yoga sessions you can expect a mix of challenging, slowly flowing asanas as well as longer-held, strengthening poses, all designed to ground the body and lift the spirit. During the meditation sessions, you will utilize mindful self-inquiry, deeply restorative yoga Nidra, and breathing practices to sooth the nervous system and address unconscious mental habits that produce tension and discomfort.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at the Christchurch International Airport (CHC), which receives flights from Australia, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Japan, and Singapore, as well as from a large number of domestic locations. Another option is to book your flight to arrive at the Auckland International Airport (AKL) and then book a domestic flight to the Christchurch International Airport (CHC).

Course information

Even though this program is for yoga students of all levels, classes will be primarily intermediate level classes with options and suggestions for people who are newer to the practice or more advanced. Absolute beginners might find the program a little challenging, as classes are geared toward those with some experience with the poses. New Zealand yoga journeys are geared towards people with a reasonable level of physical fitness. You will be on your feet for several hours at a time during excursions often during the heat of the day, and possibly in the rain. Steep and uneven terrain will be often encountered, please be sure that this is the kind of journey that you are physically and mentally prepared for. The journey does require a fair amount of endurance.

Admission requirements

If you have never practiced yoga before, it is highly recommended to take a minimum of five alignment-focused, beginner-level classes at a local yoga studio sometime before the departure date.

Electricity information

  • An adaptor or converter with angled heads for New Zealands 240-volt system is recommended.

Accommodation request / information

  • Specific rooms may vary depending on availability.

During this retreat, both the retreat staff and the accommodation staff will do their best to accommodate special diets, but please be aware that this will not always be possible.

Extension options

  • Accommodation of early arrivals or late departures will depend solely on availability and discretion of the property.

Passport / visa

Australians, most Europeans, North Americans, South Africans, and people from several South American countries do not need to apply for a visa before traveling to New Zealand. The complete list of countries can be found on the visa-waiver list. If you hold a passport from a country on this list and are visiting New Zealand for up to three months, upon arrival, you will be asked to provide travel tickets or evidence of onward travel arrangements. Your passport must be valid for at least three months after departure from New Zealand. Visitor visas granted at the airport are electronic, which means you may not get a stamp or label in your passport.

Important information

Upon arrival, you will need to fill out a passenger arrival card before you get to passport control. Once you have been cleared with your passport, you will need to claim your luggage and proceed to customs and biosecurity checks. New Zealand customs is quite strict, aiming to protect the country and its environment. Certain items are not allowed to be brought in, like wooden objects or muddy shoes. Some have restrictions for entry or must be declared if they represent a biosecurity risk. "The yoga and meditation pilgrimage was the most incredible way to sink into the beauty of Nepal. It was so professionally and cleverly put together with a right balance of yoga, meditation, and spiritual experiences. Having the team who organized the retreat following us every day, made it special. It never felt like anyone was organizing it for any other reason but the joy of sharing their passion. We could feel this passion, their knowledge and I think this explains why the retreat was so highly appreciated by everyone. Thank you all, organizers, teachers, guides, and students for making it such a strong and unforgettable experience."

"Yoga Nepal was the perfect experience at the perfect time in my life. It really felt like family every step of the way, the love, the sharing, the teaching, the laughing, and the crying were all beautiful experiences. The staging of the trip was ideal, from the vibrancy of Kathmandu, to the sacred energy of Boudhanat, to the serene and subtle vibrations at Namo Buddha. The Yoga Nepal team was incredible, patient, gentle, and loving while still meeting the needs of a diverse group of people and interests. I would recommend this trip to anyone interested in experiencing Nepal."

"I am still sorting out my feelings after the retreat. I think it was one of the best things I couldve done in my lifetime. There are few things in our lifetimes that we reflect on very fondly and the Yoga Nepal experience was one of them."

"This retreat wasnt just a series of yoga practices planned with some cultural tourism thrown in. Marni Kravitz has taken pains to design a spiritual journey that brought us close to the intriguing cultures of the land. Seeing the rich spiritual traditions of the land unfold right before you, as well as partaking in some activities of the people, made it a truly beautiful and humbling experience. All in all, this trip has a special place in my heart. Because of it, I will never see things the same way again."

"If you are looking for a spiritual adventure, this could be the trip for you. I have not done group travel of any kind since I was a kid, this experience was so authentic that I felt like I was with a group of friends I had known for a long time. I came out of Yoga Nepal a little bit wiser and had my eyes opened to an incredible community that I had no idea existed. We were in such good hands, no detail was overlooked. The teachers that Marni puts in front of her group are experts in their fields. Marni is a great host and she leads by example."

"What a wonderfully fulfilling and unforgettable experience! Marni organized everything impeccably: from her perfect choice of destinations and hotels, to her choice of excellent teachers and guides. They are all extremely knowledgeable in their fields and make every experience enjoyable and enriching. These 11 days are complete with physical yoga, meditation and introduction to Buddhism, meeting Rinpoches and Tulkus (teachers) in monasteries, visiting the beautiful Kathmandu Valley and hiking through terraced hills and remote villages. I highly recommend enrolling for a retreat with Traveling Yogis. It truly is a "pilgrimage to the heart"."

"Yoga Nepal masterfully opened a door to Nepal that left me wanting to learn, feel, and experience more. Nepal is so rich and varied that I don't think you can ever take it all in but Marni and her team told a story of Nepal that was woven together through unforgettable experiences, practices, and teachings. It has changed, in large ways and small, the way I think about my practices, my meditation, and my everyday outlook. It was one of those experiences you wish you could have again, for the first time, because when you look back, you wish you could capture and savor each minute more. I can't wait to find a way back."

"This trip was an amazing experience! It was the perfect balance between yoga, meditation and Buddhism. It also had a very good balance of tourism and culture, which made it unique. The sights, the food, and the accommodations were all very enjoyable. Kudos to Marni Kravitz & the team for such a nicely managed program. Waiting to hear where Yoga Nepal 2.0 will happen! Much love & thanks."

"Back in March I took an amazing journey with Marni Kravitz and her team to Nepal. Daily yoga and hikes reconnected me to my body; the meditation and Buddhist teachings challenged my mind; and my heart was opened to a new community of people. If you've been feeling a little less than focused, I highly recommend this trip. I can promise you'll have an amazing experience (Oh and the food is amazing, too!)."
