Dar Ayur, entirely renovated in 2015, is an elegant riad located in the very centre of Marrakech Medina. It has five spacious and finely decorated bedrooms with air conditioned, private bathroom; a lovely roof terrace for yoga and dining, and two living rooms.

Shared accommodation is based on couples in an double room or same sex singles in a twin room. Shared accommodation is in twin single beds. Couples sharing and solo occupancy rooms are in double beds. If you are traveling along but don't mind sharing a twin room, Tonic Retreats will match you a room buddy. Solo occupancy is limited and is usually in a double room.

Please note that occasionally Tonic Retreats may need to host the retreat in an alternative riad. We will always seek to have the same luxury standard and central location as the riad advertised

The four-day Marrakech retreat include luxury boutique riad accommodation, healthy gourmet vegetarian food, and a twice-daily rooftop yoga practice to a DJ-curated soundtrack. Suitable for beginners and practiced yogis, the yoga is led by Pip Taverner whose sessions are based on Ashtanga in the morning and Vinyasa flow in the evening.

Designed with plenty of free time to explore the souks, experience a Moroccan hammam scrub, or just read a book, Tonic Retreats promise to leave you feeling energized and refreshed.

Yoga

The classes on a Tonic Retreat are a great way to bond with others, all moving together, sharing this wonderful experience. They are taught so that if you're fairly new or very familiar with yoga there are always variations to modify and simplify, or challenge and deepen each posture. They love music so curate soundtracks to accompany your classes, enhancing the mood and flow.

If you're a beginner this retreat is a great way to get a solid grounding in the foundations of this incredible system and reap the benefits of a regular practice. Those more experienced in yoga will be challenged to go to the next level and gain a deeper understanding of postures and technique.

Mornings

Mornings begin with led Ashtanga yoga covering most of the postures in the half primary. This is traditionally practiced in the morning and you'll start your day feeling energized yet calm.

Afternoons

The afternoon's session will be varied depending on the day's activities. There will be afternoon Vinyasa yoga classes, this is a flowing style of yoga linking and moving seamlessly into postures with the breath. You will experience a stress releasing Yin yoga style class, where postures are held for much longer periods of time using the breath to slowly release tension stored in the body.

Workshop

During the workshop you will be able to discuss and break down various postures, try out different approaches, and ask those questions you've always wanted to ask about yoga. The classes will all start or finish with mindfulness meditation or pranayama.

There will be time across the four days to ask your teacher one-to-one anything that you'd like help with or to work on. Don't be surprised if there's an impromptu headstand workshop or two.

Daily schedule

  • 07:30 - 08:30 Morning Ashtanga yoga
  • 08:45 - 09:30 Breakfast
  • 10:30 - 12:00 Organized optional activity, for example guided souk trip or hammer spa followed by free time
  • 16:00 - 17:00 Afternoon tea and cake
  • 18:00 - 19:15 Evening Vinyasa or Yin yoga
  • 19:30 - 20:30 Gourmet vegetarian dinner followed by free time

Exploring the bustling medina and getting lost in the maze of winding streets is part of the charm of Marrakech. Tonic Retreats offer a group guided souk tour so that you don't miss out on the array of traders and the history of this colorful world famous market.

Pip Taverner

Pip’s journey deep into yoga started at square one. No previous dance experience or naturally bendy limbs, she entered a yoga class and rolled out a mat as a complete novice. She knows first hand how it feels to be unable to touch your toes, nervous and self-conscious in a group class or with limitations due to injury. However, it wasn’t long before a once weekly class progressed to a daily practice and she took the step to become a qualified instructor.

After completing a 200-hours teacher training in Ashtanga Vinyasa under the guidance of Brian Cooper and Union Yoga in 2013, she went to study in Mysore India for three months to further develop and deepen her knowledge of yoga and pranayama. Since then she has returned numerous times to study intensively with teacher Vinay Kumar and has practiced under the guidance of John Scott, David Keil, and Dena Kingsberg

Here’s why she loves yoga,“through an ever evolving discovery and awareness of my body and breath over the last eight years yoga progressed from a once weekly class into a daily Ashtanga yoga practice. My practice has helped me grow stronger physically and mentally and continually gives me the tools to face myself and others with compassion and understanding."

Her classes are a place to feel safe and to accept where you are in your body. There is no place for judgement or expectation. Tonic Retreats work on grounding and creating a solid foundation. There is time for exploring how you feel, what works for you, what feels good and inevitably perhaps what doesn't with humor and a playful approach.

Inspired by Jivamukti Yoga London, she have passion for incorporating music which is curated especially to mirror the sequence of my Vinyasa classes. Music helps to bring a vibrancy and flow to both practice and teaching.

This retreat is hosted at Riad Dar Ayur in Marrakech. It is an oasis of calm in the heart of the medina.

"This retreat was an amazing introduction to Yoga, Pip is a talented and generous teacher who has given me the confidence to continue with my practice. I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of such a memorable experience. Naz is an incredible and creative chef who provided a stunning variety of meals during this retreat. I have now been inspired to add more vegetarian meals to my weekly menu, especially the Bircher Muesli which I now have for breakfast!"

"Pip and Naz form a perfect team to offer a great retreat. While Pip takes you through a whole lot of yoga exercise variations suitable for all levels, Naz spoils you with some divine light, healthy and tasty food. With 2 daily yoga practises including explanations we got a lot of insight into Ashtanga and plenty of inspiration for the practise at home. And all of it left enough time to go out and explore the exiting city of Marrakech. Thank you, ladies! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!"
