Located in the northwest of Koh Phangan, Thailand, The Yoga Retreat is nestled in the jungle just ten minutes away from Haad Salad beach and provides a nurturing environment to develop your practice and cultivate a better life. They believe in self-healing and that students are their own best teachers. Their aim is to provide you the tools to deepen your personal awareness.

Available only for students on courses or retreats, there are six rooms that offer an encouragement towards the simplicity of living in the midst of natural surroundings. Open your windows to the tropical weather of southern Thailand or enjoy the cool breeze from a fan. There are en-suite private rooms.

Yoga classes at the retreat are a combination of familiar postures (asana), as well as more challenging poses, with adjustments and variations given to students. Emphasis is always placed on the breath, which brings awareness to the body and mind simultaneously. The result is that the body becomes energized, the mind becomes centered, and awareness is increased. The aim is to increase vitality at the same time as promoting a sense of well-being.

Four weeks to immerse yourself in the real world of Ashtanga

Learn, understand and apply the theory behind the 8 limbs of yoga and set the foundations for a lifelong journey of discovery. During the first week you will set the pace and the rhythm, and cleanse your body with a three-day detox. Your asana practice takes place every morning; learn the theory and most of the philosophy you will develop in the following weeks. On the second week we add pranayama into the mix, a variety of breathing techniques to invigorate the body, to relax it, and to heal it.

Breathing is one of the mayor components that make Ashtanga yoga as a whole, incredibly powerful. Apply pranayama during the third week (and the rest of your life) and learn to meditate: a five-day course to help you live from within. The fourth week is about integrating all of these elements into your practice. Meditate before sunrise and sunset and practice your pranayama after your practice. Now: you've learned it, you've lived it, and you know it. Embrace it and live your life fully.

Ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga yoga is a traditional method of practice inspired by T. Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi jois from Mysore, India. It is a style of yoga that is physically demanding due to the constant movement from one pose to the next (Vinyasa) practiced in its correct sequential order, Ashtanga gradually leads the practitioner to rediscover his or her fullest potential on all levels of human consciousness, physical, psychological, and spiritual. Through this practice of correct breathing (Ujjayi pranayama), postures (asanas), gazing point (driste) and energetic locks (bandas), we gain control of the senses and a deep awareness of ourselves. By maintaining this discipline with regularity and devotion, one acquires steadiness of body and mind.

Mysore style has everyone doing their own set practice The teacher guides you by giving you the next posture only when you are ready. The students are given responsibility for their own practice. You learn the sequence to memory. Your cue to move on to the next posture comes from your breath. The practice becomes a part of you. There is a community everyone is addressed by name and the teacher knows your practice inside and out. This creates an energy, which makes everyone feel connected. You have to challenge yourself, not wait for the teacher to challenge you! It's inspiring. Every morning you witness ordinary people achieve extraordinary things in their practice. The most inspiring part of all is that they all started in the same place and put in a tremendous amount of work to get where they are. Mysore is traditionally practiced early morning as prana is highest then and all is still.

"I spent 6 days at the Yoga Retreat and it was exactly what I wanted and more. Firstly, the yoga classes and teachers were brilliant, and I have left the retreat with a deeper understanding and connection to the practice. I am relatively new to yoga, but have learnt so much in those few days. The people there were outstanding, especially Claire Yates who made sure everyone was taken care of. The Raw Cafe was delicious and looked forward to every meal there! Words cannot describe how awesome that time at the retreat was, I cannot wait to go back! " Website, edited

  • Review by Kelley and Amber, from Dublin, Ireland

"We stayed at the yoga retreat for the 5 day course and we loved it. They cater to all yoga levels with ease in their unled ashtanga classes. The classes were more challenging than we expected but so much more rewarding after our stay because we really pushed ourselves and because the classes weren't led, we were able to leave with the confidence to practice yoga by ourselves after. "

"The accommodation was humble and very comforting. The food was amazing, some of the best food we'd had in Thailand (try the mango pie) but the whole experience was really made by the people there. Everyone was so welcoming and encouraging from the get go, creating a really lovely atmosphere in the place the whole time. Thank you to Teresa and Kes for having such dedication to their practice, and a big thanks to Claire for having a beautiful and open soul and being so easy to talk to, we really appreciate everything you did for us and we might just see you again in the future when we're back for more.", edited

"I've stayed at the Yoga Retreat for a month with my best friend. We never did yoga before but we were looking to spend some time to take care of ourselves. "

"At first we thought we would have not been able to go through a whole month of yoga. But in the end we were transformed physically and mentally.. Everyone was amazing, and our teachers, Theresa and Kes were fabulous. "

"At the Yoga Retreat you have the chance to meet incredible people from all over the world and share experiences, travel tips, emotions and laughter. "

"The food is really good. The place is super close to the beach (15 mins of walk) and overlooking the beautiful jungle."

"I do miss every day of my stay and hope to be back very soon!!"

"I stayed at the yoga retreat for a week in May and had a great time! I have practiced yoga back home but it was my first encounter with Ashtanga. It was such a great experience and definitely a highlight of my trip. The people at the retreat are so welcoming and kind, the place had a really nice family feel to it. The food was also amazing. Thank you :)"

"Been there twice now, I love the energy and vibe. There's enough possibilities to connect with others, but if you prefer to unwind by yourself that's just totally fine as well. Totally helped me get back on a loving and healthy path! Love the way the yoga is taught! "

"If you're extremely focused on luxury fancy resorts with not a single bug to be spotted, you might want to prep yourself before you go. The retreat is really next to the jungle but that's also the beauty of it!"

"I will definitely be back as soon as possible:)!"

"I was on a 5-day programme at The Yoga Retreat in May 2016 which was an absolutely amazing experience from the beginning to the end. "

"I had never done Ashtanga Mysore before, but I quickly felt really comfortable going through the postures with all the guidance we got from Kes during the classes. The combination with Ashtanga Mysore in the morning and Hatha in the afternoon, beautifully guided by Sara and Claire, was a great combination that made me feel energised during the day and relaxed at the end of the day after the Hatha class. "

"I opted for the meditation class with Teresa as well, where she guided us to a number of meditation practised that I could immediately take back home and start to practise on my own. "

"The whole experience with being in the jungle and staying at a retreat and living closely together with other people (who happened to be amazing human beings) was really quite a transformational experience for me and come Friday, I was not ready to leave. Top that up with amazing vegan food and friendly caring staff and you got The Yoga Retreat on Koh Phangan!"

"Thank you Teresa, Claire, Steph, Sara, Kes, Wim and the rest of the staff! I'll definitely be back!"

"The Yoga retreat is amazing! The overall yoga experience and accommodation was earthy and relaxing. Well, as relaxing as Mysore style Ashtanga can be. We stayed for the 30 day training, and stayed at the retreat. I now self practice and have one of the best lifestyle tools out there! We had lectures, meditation and pranayama practice, great for a solid introduction without complete overload, rooms were comfortable, although not air-conditioned, but that added to the experience for us, and the owners and staff really made us feel like part of a family. There are 3 beaches within a good walking distance, ranging from 15 to 35 minutes, we walked often." website, edited

"I had a 5 day introduction to Mysore Ashtanga. The class covered the practice in depth in morning asana, philosophy class with a group discussion, and various types of meditation daily. The teachers are very helpful and teaches yoga in traditional approach but also how it could be practiced to modern society to fit individual lifestyles."

"We stayed 10 days and had an absolutely wonderful time. The yoga classes are great, we both learned a lot, not only postures but also about the philosophy, meditation etc. But everything and everyone is down to earth and very kind. The food was one of the best we had in Thailand - (me as a meat-eater even liked the raw-food dishes...) Location: 10min walk downhill to a very nice beach. We would definitely come back again!"

  • Review by a traveller from Bergen, Norway

"It was so nice to escape my everyday week to come to a place like this. I spent a whole month on the retreat and on the 30 days Ashtanga. I slept at Haad Salad beach, because the jungle was too noisy for me to sleep in, but other than that, the retreat was incredible. The teachers (so great and so kind), the retreat keepers, the students and the food is something I will not forget. It was 30 days with total relaxation. I rented a scooter to cruise around, and it was worth it. You can do a lot more and visit more places on the island with a scooter. Plus, it feel so good to ride in the wind in that warmth in May."

I found the yoga teachers to be extremely knowledgeable, the staff to be incredibly friendly, and helpful, and the environment to be warm and inspiring. I found the 3-day detox and 5-day yoga immersion to be eye opening. I can't wait to integrate the lessons that I learned at your center into my life in NYC. Thank you again for sharing your center with me. I hope that I will have the chance to return with my twin sister."

" The Yoga Retreat has been the highlight of my 4 month trip in southeast Asia! Upon welcome, I was greeted with friendly and genuine smiles and upon staying, I gained knowledge that will last a lifetime. My teachers at The Yoga Retreat were very experienced and worked to make a personal connection with me both in and outside of class. The small class sizes allowed them to give me lots of personal attention to improve my practice as well. Both in and out of class, the teachers shared their knowledge on the practice of yoga and its rich spiritual traditions. My room at the retreat was cheerful and clean and the food was outstanding! I left The Yoga Retreat glowing. I leave The Yoga Retreat and its wonderful staff glowing recommendations. They will forever be my standard of a genuine, personal, friendly, and spiritual retreat. "

" The purpose of my month long stay was to stay grounded and hopefully develop tools to deal with my anxiety and use these in daily life. The retreat, yoga, people, lectures, and teachers gave me these tools and more! Even though I am still a worrier, I feel more calm and relaxed about my future happiness and where I am going. Teachers were gentle, but strong. They gave me inner faith about myself. I loved the adjustments and correct alignment. The room was amazing. I will be dreaming about your hummus salad. "
