The asana program is based on Hatha yoga primarily.

The goal is to ensure that you feel confident teaching classical Hatha yoga, Yin, and Vinyasa style classes upon completion of this course. You will also explore a variety of yoga styles during the program, such as Kundalini, Nidra, Metta and Eccentric Dance style yoga.

Immerse yourself in yogic philosophy and history, anatomy and physiology, asana, pranayama, healthy living, developing a home practice, ethics, chakras, mantras, meditation, teaching methodology, and practicum, through hands-on instruction, independent study, reading, and assignments.

Certifications

Students who complete their training are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®)

200-hour intensive teacher training program

The Yoga Mat School yoga teacher training program is based on the Eight Limbed Yogic Path, the primary resource of this teacher training program. The certified, experienced faculty guarantee that you will be challenged and fulfilled, by the material and practice, offered in this course.

Yoga is a lifelong study and practice. To study and teach yoga is to learn about the self. They know that students are faithful, dedicated yogis who will give and share as much as receive from this experience. Each student brings a wealth of life experience and unique gifts and they look forward to this amazing learning process and exchange of ideas.

Through demonstration, lecture, and hands-on, active participation you will explore:

Asana or body postures

The detailed study of asana (postures), alignment, grounding, awareness, modifications, contraindications, use of props, mudras (hand gestures), bandhas (energy seals), drishti (focal points), adjustments, enhancements, modifications, corrections, variations, and more.

Pranayama or breathing techniques

  • Learn to direct, enhance, and build life force
  • Study energy locks and channels, bandhas, and nadis

Meditation and Mantra yoga

Finding peace through meditation helps you learn how to help guide others to focus and quiet the mind. Various meditation styles and techniques will be explored during the program. Mantra yoga is the yoga of sound, a variety of mantras are learned during this program.

Anatomy and physiology

You will learn about human anatomy and physiology, body planes, body alignment, body systems, the spine, injures, disease, physical effects of yoga, benefits and risks, anatomy, and physiology application in asana. The fascia and muscle or skeletal systems are a main focus of study.

Chakras and nadis

You will also explore the chakras and nadis.

Yogic history and philosophy

The 8 Limb Path of Yoga and Yoga Sutras are the primary source of study. Influential yogis, Sanskrit, ancient yogic texts, and the evolution of yoga from pre-classical to modern day yoga will be explored.

The Yoga Mat School is located in The Banburee Retreat and Spa Centre, on the south coast of Koh Samui in Thailand.

Ko Samui, Thailand’s second largest island, lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus. It's known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, and dense, mountainous rainforest plus luxury resorts and posh spas.

Koh Samui offers incredible beaches and endless activities and entertainment, as well as beautiful Buddhist temples and statues in all sizes.

The Thai food is out of this world, but if you want something else for dinner, a plethora of cuisines are available. You can also visit one of the countless night markets to sample delicious bites and buy some souvenirs. The location is a 20-minute ride to Lamai, one of the main cities on the Island, and just a 45-minute ride to Chaweng, the largest city on the island.

Things to do (optional)

Koh Samui's repertoire of things to do and see is varied and interesting, the island hosts a great deal of splendid natural and man-made attractions from mummified monks to the famous grandma and grandpa rocks (Hin Ta and Hin Yai) to attractive waterfalls and more. There is nothing to stop you having a blast on Samui Island. For those interested in religious imagery and architecture the Big Buddha will impress, especially at sunset.

Nature lovers can also visit Ang Thong Marine National Park on a day trip to enjoy a genuine 'get away from it all' feel in the splendid tropical islands it hosts.

Incredible Koh Tao, meaning ‘Turtle Island’, lives up to its name, being the scuba diving destination of choice in Thailand. The perfect white sand beaches which ring the hilly 21 kilometers square island are surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

The easiest and quickest way to get to Koh Samui from Bangkok is to fly, flight ticket is cheap if you book early. Bangkok Airlines has 19 flights per day from Bangkok to Koh Samui. Thai Airways has 2 flights per day. Fly from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then take a ferry to Koh Samui. This is cheaper than flying directly to Koh Samui. The bus from the airport to the pier and the ferry across to Koh Samui add at least 3 hours to your travel time.

Transportation to/from this airport is not included but can be arranged easily for a very fair fee provided by the resort partners at The Banburee. The fee can easily be added to your final bill at checkout for the utmost convenience.

Arrival by bus

Take the bus from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Then, take the ferry to Koh Samui. This is the cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui. No reservations required, just show up at the bus station and you should be on a bus heading south within the hour. The bus will take you directly to the ferry terminal. Be sure to buy a bus and ferry combo ticket.
