The yoga

A daily asana practice, grounded in the traditions of Ashtanga Vinyasa and Yin, will help to invigorate and reconnect you with your body.

Nyepi - the day of silence

Nyepi is one of the most important days in the Balinese calendar and it marks the beginning of a new year. It is a day devoted to self reflection. The Balinese will observe silence and will not engage in any kind of entertainment for 24 hours. All shops and businesses are closed and all noise is to be avoided.

You will stay at the resort and also be silent during this very special day. The meals will be served in the privacy of your room. You can still of course enjoy the spa, swimming pool, library, or just take time to rest and to contemplate. This retreat is a full week of rest, renewal, reflection and bliss set among the backdrop of the Island of the Gods. This is a retreat for all the senses, heightened by the day of silence and the healing practices of yoga led by master teacher Rachel Roberts.

First a refreshing cleanser is applied, followed by a peeling and exfoliation treatment using a natural herbal scrub. Next, a face, neck and shoulder massage with a steam treatment followed by manual extraction.

After the application of a face mask you can relax deeply for 15 minutes while it does its wonderful work! The treatment concludes with an application of a refreshing iced towel and moisturizing cream.

Balinese massage

Combining different massage techniques - pressure points, palm pressure, sliding and kneading - this massage works deeply on the muscles, leaving the body relaxed. Balinese massage is believed to relieve sleep disorder, muscle pains and sport injuries.

You can also book the following spa treatments for an additional price:

Ayurvedic abhyanga massage (50 minutes)

Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic massage done by applying warm herb-infused oil to the body in rhythmic steps. It enhances the lymphatic drainage and circulation and is one of the pre-detoxing treatments. Two well trained therapists will apply the healing qualities of medicated oil, restoring the balance of doshas / bioenergy and vitality.

Ayurvedic crown massage (45 minutes)

Relax upright, supported by your therapist's hands as they massage warm oil into your head and upper body in a specific, rhythmic rippling motion that dispels tension and allows you to surrender to sensation. A fresh hibiscus leaf mask is then applied to your hair and your head is wrapped in a banana leaf and an arm massage is performed while you relax for 25 minutes.

In the final steps, your therapist's skilled fingers stimulate circulation to awaken the spirit as the mask is removed and your hair washed and towel or blow dried. This treatment is recommended for all, especially those who hold tension in the upper body and/or suffer from headaches / migraine. Hibiscus leaves contain vitamin B1, B2, and C.

Ayurvedic massage - chakra dhara (2 hours 30 minutes)

The Ayurvedic Chakra Dhara massage is both sensual and spiritual. It includes the dripping of one litter of warm herbal oil onto the chakra points. The therapists use this oil ritual to balance the energy flow and purify the body, mind and spirit.

Your therapist skilfully and respectfully treats your body with an array of repetitive and slow movements. Alternatively stimulating and soothing to eliminate toxins and other impurities. This indulgent treatment also promotes circulation, increases flexibility and relieves pain and stiffness.

Ayurvedic shirodara (45 minutes)

Shirodara is a treatment used by Indian yogis to enhance self-awareness. At Kumara spa, shirodara restores calm and vital balance to the mind and the nervous system, correcting imbalances of the senses. The treatment is also believed to reduce insomnia.

Shirodara begins and ends with a face, neck and scalp massage. Once you are totally relaxed, our therapist takes up to 25 minutes to pour warm herbal oil in an even, continuous stream over the 6th chakra point in the centre of your forehead, better known as your "third eye". In this liberated state you may meditate deeply or simply abandon yourself to sensation.

Balinese massage (60 minutes)

Combining different massage techniques - pressure points, palm pressure, sliding and kneading - this massage works deeply on the muscles, leaving the body relaxed. Balinese massage is believed to relieve sleep disorder, muscle pains and sport injuries.

Deep tissue massage (75 minutes)

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic massage designed to loosen muscles, increase blood flow and relieve stress. Your therapist will skilfully use her elbows and fingers to penetrate all layers of tissue. This therapy breaks down rigid muscle tissue and helps to relieve pain and restore movement. Your therapist uses slow, strong strokes that stimulate and revive deep muscle tissue.

Please be aware that you may experience some mild discomfort as your tight muscles are kneaded and loosened. For a day or two following a deep tissue massage your muscles may be sore similar to what you experience after an intensive work out. However, the benefits far outweigh this mild discomfort as you will notice more flexibility in previously painful areas as well as a state of harmony and well-being.

Facial treatments (60 minutes)

At Kumara spa, we offer two distinctive and indulgent facial treatments using high-quality natural skin care products. Men may need to begin with a close shave (included). In both facials, our therapists gently cleanse, steam and exfoliate your skin; manual extraction follows if needed.

Throughout, therapists incorporate soothing and uplifting face, neck and shoulder massage. As you relax under the mask of your choice, you also enjoy an arm massage. Finally, a bio-seaweed moisturizer is applied after toner to aid skin repair and maintain moisture levels. All our facials encourage the restoration of youthful vitality and natural radiance.

Hair creme bath (60 minutes)

A vital treat for your hair and scalp that also lifts the spirit! Your scalp is massaged with a rich avocado cream to stimulate circulation and release tension. Steaming follows to hydrate and preserve suppleness. Your therapist slowly massages your shoulders and upper arms before finally applying natural hair tonic, washing and towel drying. This treatment will leave your hair radiant.

Hand spa treatment (60 minutes)

An asian hand ritual created to revitalize and beautify your hands. A lemon grass cleanser is followed by a gentle scrub, a clay mask and a rosewater hand wrap. The result is remarkable!

Hibiscus hair shampoo (30 minutes)

Before the arrival of shampoo, Indonesians used this special recipe to keep their hair healthy. We invite you to enjoy this time-honoured tradition. Our treatment includes a scalp, neck and shoulder massage.

Hot stone massage (90 minutes)

Your massage begins with a soothing gentle massage using oil while the stones are heating and sanitizing. With one heated stone in each hand your therapist applies long, flowing massage strokes which penetrate your body tissue, opening up blood vessels and improving circulation.

Upon completion of each sequence, the therapist lays a stone to rest at chakra points and other key trigger points. The heat from the stones relaxes your muscles and unblocks energy centers. Be sure to inform the therapist if you find the stones too hot for you.

Kumara spa exfoliation and bath (45 minutes)

A post-massage treatment that will enhance your spa experience. While massage relaxes your body, the selected scrub treatment removes dead skin cells, making your skin look fresh and young. You can enjoy other benefits contained in exfoliants, depending on which one you choose.

Mandi kopi - coffee bath (110 minutes)

The treatment includes a traditional body massage, followed by a mixed of coffee and rice powder scrub. Fresh papaya will be applied to moisture your skin then a bath of fragrant blossoms to end the session.

Mandi lulur - floral bath (110 minutes)

17th century Javanese royal treatment. A relaxing massage, followed by spice scrub (turmeric, sandal wood, and rice powder) exfoliation with yogurt for moisturizer and a fragrant blossom bath. A true royal treatment!

Mandi rempah - spice bath (110 minutes)

A 65 minutes of relaxing massage to enhance blood circulation, followed by a spice exfoliation and a warm, soothing bath of herbs and spices.

Mandi susu - milk bath (110 minutes)

Queen Cleopatra's secret for beauty in longevity! After a 65 minute relaxing massage, a milk-based scrub will be used to exfoliate your skin. Milk body mask will be thus applied and finally, relaxing bath with fresh flowers to end the treatment.

Mandi teh hijau - green tea bath (110 minutes)

Started with a relaxing body massage, this treatment is then followed by skin exfoliation using green tea and rice powder based scrub. Yogurt is used to moisture your skin afterwards and to eliminate toxins as well. The last session will be having a bath of flower petals!

Manicure / pedicure

In the manicure and pedicure treatments, your cuticles are trimmed after soaking in a warm flower bath, and your nails clipped and/or filed to shape. A hand and lower arm massage brings relaxation to the manicure, while a foot and lower leg massage enhances the pedicure. When polish is chosen, base, two coats of color and a top coat give a durable, elegant finish.

Pondicherry foot massage (30 minutes)

This rejuvenating treatment begins with a soak in warm flowered water and continues with a foot reflexology session followed by an extensive lower leg massage. Leave with a spring in your step!

Relaxing massage (75 minutes)

Kumara's relaxing massage is based on Ayurvedic principles and uses warm oil and professional hands to balance the chakras, the key energy points in your body. In harmony with Ayurveda and stone therapy, this massage is designed for deep relaxation and stress removal.

Explore the surrounding areas

Outside Ubud there are some places that are worth visiting. Less than a 30 minutes' drive from Ubud you can find a postcard-like scenery in Tegalalang rice fields. An hour north, find the Kintamani region, the home to Mount Batur and some of Bali's best scenery. A beautiful sunrise can be enjoyed from the summit of Mount Batur.

A little more to the north, embark on a journey to Munduk for the beautiful waterfall and plantations. Kumara also offers individual journeys to take you off the-beaten-track.

Hike through the rice terraces

Ubud has spilled out into tiny surrounding villages, but the growth has not ruined the natural setting of the beautiful surroundings. Green rice fields still blanket much of the area and can be reached by foot or on bicycle. Hiking these tranquil fields in the morning is something you will never forget. Kumara offers the Ubud Spa Vacation package which includes a guided walk through off the rice fields together with spa pampering and a two-night stay.

Pamper yourself at the spa

With scores of holistic medicine practitioners now living around Ubud, it is no surprise that so many spas and meditation centers have opened up. Kumara offers quality spa treatments at its in-house spa. The Ayurvedic chakra dhara treatment of 2.5 hours is an experience not to be missed!

Ride an elephant

In the village of Taro, 20 minutes north of Ubud, you can ride an elephant, then feed it and give it a bath. Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, no reservations necessary.

Shop in the local markets of Ubud

The influx of tourism in Ubud mixed with the proximity of so many artists has caused a great deal of unique boutiques and shops to open. Unlike the tacky, beach-tourist feeling of shopping in Kuta, Ubud provides a much more sophisticated experience.

Local shops are filled with unique and beautiful crafts, art work, carvings, jewelery, and gifts to take back home. The sprawling, indoor Ubud Market caters mostly to tourists in search of cheap souvenirs. Be sure to haggle prices - negotiation is expected - or you may end up paying triple what something is worth.

The rivers around Ubud provide pleasant rafting conditions year round - with enough rapids to make the ride fun, but still mild enough for those who tend to be timid when it comes to whitewater. Rafting also provides an unrivaled way to check out the natural scenery, wildlife and exotic plants of Bali, while sitting happily on your rear end! And it's a good way to cool off if the tropical heat gets oppressive. Ask the receptionist to book a rafting experience for you.

Visit the temples

One of the things that makes Bali special is the Balinese Hinduism religion and tradition. Everywhere you look, every single day, you will see ceremonies, rituals and offerings. Ubud contains dozens of beautiful Hindu temples and most are free to visit. Proper attire is required, although many temples will loan or rent a sarong for your visit.

To witness or participate in the enactment of religious tradition, visit a temple during a ceremony or a temple anniversary. Ask the receptionist at Kumara to find out when and where such opportunity might arise.

Visit Ubud's art museums and galleries

Ubud is known as a hothouse for fine art in Bali. It’s all down to the town’s royal family, which has traditionally patronized artists. The King of Ubud himself co-founded the Pitamaha Artists Cooperative in 1936, which was responsible for the cross-pollination between traditional Balinese art and Western art (represented by the expat artists Rudolph Bonnet and Walter Spies, two westerners who settled in Ubud).

You can see the development of Ubud's fine art through its collection of museums: the Blanco Renaissance Museum and the Museum Puri Lukisan, among others, feature two visions of Balinese art, the former a one-man perspective, the latter a more general overview of the 20th century and its artistic output.

Watch Balinese dance performances

No visit to Ubud is complete without seeing at least one traditional dance performance. Although the performances are very tourist-oriented, this is a great opportunity to see classic Hindu legends being told through dancers in colorful, traditional costumes. Ubud Palace is a popular place providing nightly shows. Pura Dalem has twice-weekly shows and fire dances performed outside
