Students will be accommodated in hotels in central Sparta. The Hotel is a lovely modern building in Central Sparta, well suited to accommodate students comfortable throughout the course.



Students who complete their training receive Yoga Alliance International certification, enabling them to teach worldwide.

Course objectives

This program will enable future graduates to teach with confidence. The sequences taught are designed to provide an excellent foundation for all the basic poses, to teach avoiding injury and adapt poses and sequences for differing physical levels and needs.

With the therapeutic knowledge of yoga asanas, graduates will feel confident to tailor classes for ‘digestion’, ‘back pain’, and so on. Emphasis is on getting prana (energy) to flow while doing the poses, to understand their therapeutic benefits and for each person to practice with enjoyment, correct breathing, correct alignment, and sincerity: ultimately harmonizing mind, body, and energy.

The spiritual notions of yoga can also be found in other philosophical/ spiritual traditions such as Buddhism or Western traditions. This will be looked at more closely in the yoga philosophy classes.

Course syllabus

This course is divided into 160 contact hours with a teacher and 40 non-contact hours of self-study.

Yoga asanas: 86 hours

  • Basic routine, postures, and variations

The Sun Salutations are a pranic generator with chakra awareness, therapeutic principles, interaction with the vital organs, the endocrine system, spinal manipulation, and psychodynamics.

  • Guided relaxation
  • Breathing technique; abdominal breathing, full yogic breath
  • Two pranayama techniques for cleansing and healing
  • Recuperative and therapeutic postures for specific ailments
  • Advanced postures
  • Meditation to focus and still the mind

Practice and teaching: 20 hours

  • Beginners and intermediary classes
  • In-depth asana practice and variations
  • A detailed look at specific postures for health and chronic disease, for example, postures for IBS, cancer, stress, burn out, insomnia, etc

Yoga poses for the bodily systems; including the immune system, nervous system, hormonal system, digestive system, respiratory, genito-urinary and circulatory system

Homework and group study: 40 hours (non-contact)

Karma yoga: 10 hours

Karma yoga is a fundamental tenant of yoga and means selfless service. Students are expected to participate in some of the daily chores as part of this service. This is around 30 minutes per day.

SYM advises students not to eat any breakfast before the morning asana class but there is time for snacks in the morning break. All meals are vegetarian and prepared by the cook at the house and will include a completely vegan and gluten-free option.

Healing/spa treatments

In addition to the healing modalities explored in the course, students have the opportunity to arrange private treatments with Gerry, a certified therapist in Shiatsu, Traditional Chinese Medicine. These can be arranged at an additional cost during the course.


Trainees should attend a minimum of 90% of the course. Should trainees miss more than this minimum they will need to agree with the teacher which modules to re-take. SYM reserves the right to charge additional fees for these catch-up modules.


Two years or 100 hours of minimum practice required. Successful applicants should also be in general good health both physically and emotionally in order to complete this course with the focus and dedication it requires. Individuals who do not meet these minimum requirements may still apply for a place and their applications will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

What will I gain from the 200 hours yoga teacher training course?

You will understand yoga and health at a much deeper level. Live the yogic lifestyle, practicing and sharing with others. Be confident about starting a new and greatly rewarding career and path in life.

You will be able to teach classes from total beginner to intermediate level, including open classes for all levels, classes for children, women only, the elderly, individual classes, etc.

You will also be able to vary the classes from teaching dynamic yoga to Yin yoga, Restorative yoga therapy to meditation and relaxation.

The art of yoga takes a lifetime to master, and SYM cannot imagine that teaching yoga can be learned in 200 hours. However, SYM provides you with the right information to feel confident that you will teach safely without any injury, know the core asanas in detail, and have great enjoyment and passion for your practice.

This course will clearly distinguish you from the average Yoga Teacher and is of particular interest to anyone interested in yoga, health, healing, and bodywork.

How should I prepare for my coming course with SYM?

Upon registration, students will receive a welcome pack where there is relevant info about how to prepare for the course including where to fly to and how to get here. SYM also highly recommends reading the introduction to BKS Iyengar’s “Illustrated Light on Yoga’, now a classic textbook on yoga.

What style of yoga does SYM teach?

They teach Hatha yoga broadly based on the Sivananda and Iyengar Yoga methods. They teach an energetic approach to Yoga, really feeling the postures and tapping into their unique healing potentials.

They practice flow, but more emphasis is placed on steadiness in the posture with the correct alignment of physical and energetic bodies and mindset within poses. This requires you to be slower in your practice, to truly feel and understand the tremendous therapeutic effects of the asana.

What is the minimum age limit?

The minimum age limit is 18.

What is the group size?

SYM has a maximum of 15 participants. This ensures a friendly intimate course size and appropriate time with the teachers. The group size is normally between 8-15.

What language is the course facilitated in?

All courses are taught in English. The teachers all speak several European languages and are usually able to help students should any questions arise during the course.

What if you fail to complete or finish the course?

Students who fail to complete or finish the course are welcome to come back at a later date to finish their training. The extra time or module needed to complete the course is individually different but SYM tries as much as possible to keep any extra expenses as low as possible.

Why do students have a dress code?

SYM likes to encourage students to wear positive, happy colors that facilitate learning and energy work. All colors are vibrations or frequencies of light. The therapeutic use of color, color therapy, and its association with the chakras will be discussed further during the course.

Yoga is a spiritual practice and as such there are certain ways you can dress to help your own practice and create more harmony and higher frequency vibrations in the yoga hall.

Color and sound (mantras, chanting, music) have been used from time immemorial to uplift the spirit and are tools of yoga. For this reason, SYM encourages students to wear comfortable and plain white, yellow or blue bottoms and T-shirts.

This course reflects a therapeutic approach to yoga in line with the instructor's wide-ranging experience. Which includes 30 plus years of experience as a professional Shiatsu Therapist and Teacher. The profound understanding of health, energy, psychology, mindfulness, meditation, postures, and nutrition taught here allow for a deeper understanding of Yoga, a higher level of teaching as well as for a life-changing experience.

SYM provides training of the highest possible standard, by a team of dedicated and skilled professionals. Sequences taught are designed to improve both strength and flexibility as well as bring awareness to the flow of subtle energy through the body.

The course emphasizes teaching from beginner to intermediary levels. It, therefore, concentrates on safety, the use of props, correct breathing, and alignment, restorative asana, relaxation, healing, and meditation as well as more dynamic and strong asanas to improve strength, endurance, and will-power. Students are encouraged to respect their own limitations and are not expected to exercise beyond their own physical capacities.

However, all students should be in general good health both physically and emotionally, in order to complete this course with the focus and dedication it requires. The asana practice taught at SYM is based on the Iyengar and Sivananda Yoga methods, with a focus on flow, steadiness, and relaxation. Asana practice includes the exploration of the Chakras and the Chinese acupuncture meridians with an emphasis on profound healing properties.

The course includes Pranayama, Restorative or Therapeutic Asana, Relaxation (Savasana), Meditation, Nutrition, Yoga philosophy and Psychology, Bodywork, and Chakra balancing.
