The Bodhi Khaya Retreat Center offers breathtaking views, six hiking trails, swimming dams blooming with lilies and a labyrinth to walk in. The accommodation ranges from comfortable rooms on the courtyard with en-suite facilities to beautifully appointed rooms in the original farmhouse, dating from 1791. Also available are the simple serene rooms in the cloister with shared ablution facilities.

The courtyard

The courtyard rooms are new and modern and are conveniently situated close to both the meditation hall and the main dining room. Each room is a twin with an en-suite bathroom.

Also on the courtyard is the garden room, a luxurious double room with a king-size bed, a Victorian bath, and open plan bathroom. This beautifully restored building used to be the old dairy; it has high ceilings with rustic wooden rafters and a working fireplace.

The cloister

Around a central courtyard, there are 14 beautiful single rooms. The first six rooms, in the front section of the cloister, share two showers and two toilets. Each room contains a bed, small cupboard space to hang clothes, and a side table. These rooms lead into an open plan living space that looks out across the gardens and labyrinth. The eight rooms at the back, each has a bed, a side table, a cupboard, and a basin. These rooms share three showers and three toilets.

The farmhouse

The farmhouse is a beautifully restored home dating back to the 1820s. The cape Dutch style architecture with low ceilings and cozy fireplaces will transport you back to a time when people sat down together for meals and gathered around the fireplace to share their stories at night.

Aloe dorm and daisy dorm

The aloe dorm and daisy dorm are five-bed and three-bed rooms. Ideal for friends who want to catch up. The aloe dorm has its own fireplace, en-suite bathroom with two showers, and a separate entrance leading to the lush garden. The daisy dorm has a bathroom across the passage.

Disa room

Disa is a twin room with fireplace, once the farmhouse kitchen, the room was perfectly renovated to create a peaceful space while still retaining the original room’s features.

Pincushion room

Pincushion is the deluxe room with a Queen-size bed and en suite shower. This room is ideal for couples.

Sunbird cottage

The sunbird cottage can accommodate up to four persons and has one shower bathroom, as well as an outdoor bath on the step overlooking the breath-taking Uilkraal Valley. There are two single beds in one room and a double bed in the room that leads to the outdoor bath.

The cottage has a kitchen and it is fully equipped for self-catering, and is often available at weekends even during retreat times. At these times guests won't have access to the main areas, but can enjoy a secluded and relaxing weekend, while taking in the scenery and exploring the many hiking trails.

This retreat will take place at the Bodhi Khaya Retreat Center, in Cape Town, South Africa. Situated two hours from Cape Town, Bodhi Khaya Retreat Center is nestled into 217 hectares of indigenous fynbos and milk wood forest. The landscapes of Bodhi Khaya feel both wild and protected, making it a powerful place in which to connect with nature. Bodhi Khaya has been ranked by The Huffington Post as one of the eight top retreat centers to know about worldwide.

During this retreat, you will have the priceless opportunity to reconnect with your innate wholeness and balance through a unique holistic program. This retreat includes the same strong foundations for the powerful experience of simply being, but it will be centered on re-attuning to the wisdom, capacity, and resilience of the heart. Each day of this retreat will be focused on bringing you into presence with a particular function of the heart center.

Also, the yoga sessions and the herbal medicinal treatments will support your specific systems within your physical and energetic anatomy with creative processes, contemplation, and meditation practices to build awareness of emotions, mind, and spirit. The focus, or daily drishti, will be introduced at a morning meeting where the shape of the day is laid out, and activities are explained and discussed.

You will be given specific writing and contemplation exercises or instructions for the making of your self-administration herbal treatment supportive of the day’s focus, to be taken during your free time. Plenty of free time has been deliberately included to also allow for relaxation, therapies, and time spent in solitude, to make space for a retuning to your natural rhythms.

Three days of this retreat will be conducted in silence, to deepen your experience. Each evening will close with a talking circle at which you will be able to share the experiences and wisdoms of the day and benefit from the insights of others in the group. Through natural and holistic pathways you will be able to access the presence, power, and potential of simply being.

During this retreat, you will be served daily delicious raw food and cleansing juices to supercharge your physical body. A pre-cleanse program will be sent to you in advance of the retreat. Implemented properly, over one or two weeks, this offers a gentle transition to live foods, reducing the detox symptoms that may be experienced during the course of the retreat and enabling a deeper cleanse.

You will ease into your fast with a delicious raw food menu on the first two days. As of the third day, you will be served and organic fruit and vegetable juices four times daily, with added supplements for intestinal cleansing. Herbal drinks will be given to support the cleansing process. The final two days of the retreat will introduce light raw food, followed by a raw food feast for your final meal during Sunday’s lunchtime. A light raw food salad supper will be provided to take away with you.

During the retreat, you will gather the tools you need to support the continuing inclusion of healthy practices in your life. You will receive a wealth of information about juicing, smoothie-making, raw food, and sprouting/micro-green growing, with opportunities to assist with raw food preparation. A plan for the reintroduction of other foods will be given on the final day, assisting you in identifying and eliminating foods to which your body is reactive.

During this retreat, you may enjoy alternative health therapies with the skilled practitioners like massage, bodywork, reflexology, bio-energy balance, reiki, body talk, Thai massage, organic facials, and therapeutic yoga for an additional cost.

During your free time you may visit the pristine Walker Bay beaches, practice shark diving in Gansbaai, enjoy a horse trail, and hiking through the Fynbos.

Bodhi Khaya hiking trails

Winding through 217 hectares of pristine fynbos and milk wood forests are six magical hiking trails. You can wander through an ancient forest and meditate under the old milk wood tree that’s been around for decades or follow the farm loop trail along the top of the farm for spectacular views of the valley and catch a glimpse of the ocean in the far distance. Discover meditation circles and ponds in secluded nooks in the forest; and gaze in wonder at the wild pincushions turning the hills orange in spring. Each trail has its own character, as it meanders through a different section of the farm.

Swimming dams

Beside the meditation hall and labyrinth are two beautiful swimming dams. The first is a lily dam where you can bathe in the beauty of the lilies. The second dam is a tranquil and water hole that you may have to share with swallows at the end of a hot summer's day.

Visit nearby towns

A short 15-minute drive from Bodhi Khaya is the whale watching capital of the world that is Gansbaai, a traditional fishing village and bustling and a vibrant center for the surrounding farms. Almost equi-distant in the other direction is the charming heritage village of Stanford. Established by Sir Robert Stanford in the 1800s, there are many heritage buildings, coffee shops, restaurants, and galleries to explore. Both Stanford and Gansbaai offer visitors a long list of activities from wine tasting and other culinary delights, to quad biking, hiking, and even scenic flights.

Visit the labyrinth

Bodhi Khaya's labyrinth is exquisitely crafted in harmony with the floral eco-system and incorporates fynbos, aloes, and other indigenous plants within its rings. It was built by Amber McIntyre and Jesse Jessup and is lovingly maintained by all staff members. Situated directly under the powerful mountain and surrounded by protective trees, this particular Labyrinth invites you to consciously connect with the earth and elements as you walk inwards to center.

Whale watching and beaches

Just a few minutes’ drive from Bodhi Khaya are some of the most spectacular beaches on the Whale Coast. Nearby De Kelders, there is a wide stretch of coast line that is protected as a national nature reserve. Each year between the months of July and November, this beautiful bay is home to hundreds of Southern right whales who spend the months playing with their newborn calves. To sit on the rocks at De Kelders and watch these stunning mammals in the water is truly a wonderful experience.

  • Review by Ned from Cape Town, South Africa

"I came with mostly a physical cleansing in mind, but as time went on the mental and spiritual aspects came to the forefront. In the space of 9 days, a lot of things have started to shift within old tightly held beliefs that I am starting to let go of. Different possibilities for the future have emerged and some old prejudices discarded. It was a beautiful experience being part of such a united and supportive group of people and I both was able to receive and give love. A memorable experience!"

  • Review by Nikki from London, United Kingdom

"Words cannot describe my deep gratitude to you for creating this powerful and transformative experience. This has been more than a retreat for me, like being in the school of life, connecting to myself, my heart, my soul, my body, my mind, to nature, and beautiful like-minded people. I have taken so much learning and discovery from this journey. For the first time in my life, this experience allowed me the space and time to connect to myself, immerse myself in nature and true, healthy, holistic lifestyle. I feel light, clean, filled with life, love, and deep gratitude.I came here already clear about my life purpose and this week has confirmed that I am on exactly the right path. For the first time ever I truly feel confident that I have the skills and ability to do what I need to fulfill my purpose. My level of self-care has developed immensely and I will be taking all of this with me."

  • Review by Max from Cape Town, South Africa

"On the physical level, I feel completely cleansed and inexpressibly lighter. Ive gone away with the firm intention to eat, drink and be merry in an entirely different way, a way which supports my health, my sense of harmony and balance and my spiritual practice. On an emotional level, there are old holding patterns which the silence has allowed me to look at and flag for further work.On an energetic level, I feel like I have stumbled across the secret garden, and now have a clear idea of what needs to be pruned, fed, cleared and allowed to flow. On a spiritual level I have been put in touch with countless beautiful ways to deepen my practice."

  • Review by Cormac from Cape Town, South Africa

"I feel like this experience has enabled me to discard my old habits and replace them with more balanced and consciously chosen patterns that will transform my life. I am left with the deep knowledge that I am not the person I am at work or in society, but really I am a wild creature of the Earth, engaged in a wonderful cosmic celebration. I am full of gratitude and love and feel tremendously healthy and clear-sighted."

  • Review by Francois from Cape Town, South Africa

"It exceeded all my expectations. The retreat was unbelievably beautiful and expertly facilitated. My favorite aspect of the retreat is how all the different elements came together with masterful, gentle orchestration. I use the words like life-changing very sparingly, but there is no way that this experience cant affect my journey from here."
