The Bodhi Khaya Retreat Center offers breathtaking views, six hiking trails, swimming dams blooming with lilies and a labyrinth to walk in. The accommodation ranges from comfortable rooms on the courtyard with en-suite facilities to beautifully appointed rooms in the original farmhouse, dating from 1791. Also available are the simple serene rooms in the cloister with shared ablution facilities.
The courtyard rooms are new and modern and are conveniently situated close to both the meditation hall and the main dining room. Each room is a twin with an en-suite bathroom.
Also on the courtyard is the garden room, a luxurious double room with a king-size bed, a Victorian bath, and open plan bathroom. This beautifully restored building used to be the old dairy; it has high ceilings with rustic wooden rafters and a working fireplace.
Around a central courtyard, there are 14 beautiful single rooms. The first six rooms, in the front section of the cloister, share two showers and two toilets. Each room contains a bed, small cupboard space to hang clothes, and a side table. These rooms lead into an open plan living space that looks out across the gardens and labyrinth. The eight rooms at the back, each has a bed, a side table, a cupboard, and a basin. These rooms share three showers and three toilets.
The farmhouse is a beautifully restored home dating back to the 1820s. The cape Dutch style architecture with low ceilings and cozy fireplaces will transport you back to a time when people sat down together for meals and gathered around the fireplace to share their stories at night.
The aloe dorm and daisy dorm are five-bed and three-bed rooms. Ideal for friends who want to catch up. The aloe dorm has its own fireplace, en-suite bathroom with two showers, and a separate entrance leading to the lush garden. The daisy dorm has a bathroom across the passage.
Disa is a twin room with fireplace, once the farmhouse kitchen, the room was perfectly renovated to create a peaceful space while still retaining the original room’s features.
Pincushion is the deluxe room with a Queen-size bed and en suite shower. This room is ideal for couples.
The sunbird cottage can accommodate up to four persons and has one shower bathroom, as well as an outdoor bath on the step overlooking the breath-taking Uilkraal Valley. There are two single beds in one room and a double bed in the room that leads to the outdoor bath.
The cottage has a kitchen and it is fully equipped for self-catering, and is often available at weekends even during retreat times. At these times guests won't have access to the main areas, but can enjoy a secluded and relaxing weekend, while taking in the scenery and exploring the many hiking trails.
During this retreat, you will have the priceless opportunity to reconnect with your innate wholeness and balance through a unique holistic program. This retreat includes the same strong foundations for the powerful experience of simply being, but it will be centered on re-attuning to the wisdom, capacity, and resilience of the heart. Each day of this retreat will be focused on bringing you into presence with a particular function of the heart center.
Also, the yoga sessions and the herbal medicinal treatments will support your specific systems within your physical and energetic anatomy with creative processes, contemplation, and meditation practices to build awareness of emotions, mind, and spirit. The focus, or daily drishti, will be introduced at a morning meeting where the shape of the day is laid out, and activities are explained and discussed.
You will be given specific writing and contemplation exercises or instructions for the making of your self-administration herbal treatment supportive of the day’s focus, to be taken during your free time. Plenty of free time has been deliberately included to also allow for relaxation, therapies, and time spent in solitude, to make space for a retuning to your natural rhythms.
Three days of this retreat will be conducted in silence, to deepen your experience. Each evening will close with a talking circle at which you will be able to share the experiences and wisdoms of the day and benefit from the insights of others in the group. Through natural and holistic pathways you will be able to access the presence, power, and potential of simply being.
Reset the body’s systems for health and find your way of eating for wellness, develop awareness, presence, and steadiness to bring you back in touch with your basic wisdom and goodness, peel back the filters that limit your perspective and potential and find new insight and direction, nurture free expression and fearlessness for a joyful and creative life, connect with the deep intelligence of your own life force, the natural world, and universal consciousness.
Daily guided processes like nature walks are included in this retreat.

During your free time you may visit the pristine Walker Bay beaches, practice shark diving in Gansbaai, enjoy a horse trail, and hiking through the Fynbos.
Winding through 217 hectares of pristine fynbos and milk wood forests are six magical hiking trails. You can wander through an ancient forest and meditate under the old milk wood tree that’s been around for decades or follow the farm loop trail along the top of the farm for spectacular views of the valley and catch a glimpse of the ocean in the far distance. Discover meditation circles and ponds in secluded nooks in the forest; and gaze in wonder at the wild pincushions turning the hills orange in spring. Each trail has its own character, as it meanders through a different section of the farm.
Beside the meditation hall and labyrinth are two beautiful swimming dams. The first is a lily dam where you can bathe in the beauty of the lilies. The second dam is a tranquil and water hole that you may have to share with swallows at the end of a hot summer's day.
A short 15-minute drive from Bodhi Khaya is the whale watching capital of the world that is Gansbaai, a traditional fishing village and bustling and a vibrant center for the surrounding farms. Almost equi-distant in the other direction is the charming heritage village of Stanford. Both Stanford and Gansbaai offer visitors a long list of activities from wine tasting and other culinary delights, to quad biking, hiking, and even scenic flights.
Bodhi Khaya's labyrinth is exquisitely crafted in harmony with the floral eco-system and incorporates fynbos, aloes, and other indigenous plants within its rings. It was built by Amber McIntyre and Jesse Jessup and is lovingly maintained by all staff members. Situated directly under the powerful mountain and surrounded by protective trees, this particular Labyrinth invites you to consciously connect with the earth and elements as you walk inwards to center.
Just a few minutes’ drive from Bodhi Khaya are some of the most spectacular beaches on the Whale Coast. Nearby De Kelders, there is a wide stretch of coast line that is protected as a national nature reserve.
