10 Days Detox, Meditation, and Yoga Retreat in Africa

  • Bodhi Khaya Retreat Centre, Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa

South Africa Yoga Retreat

In our fast moving times we are under pressure to live at high speed, accumulate more skills and resources, continually strive towards being "better" - more attractive, fitter, wealthier, more successful: an exhausting and ultimately unfulfilling task. The Whole Truth Retreat gives you the opportunity to experience the simplicity and joy that may be found in the present moment, and the wholeness, balance and wisdom that are always and already here. This January retreat, Sacred Being, centers around reawakening wonder and reverence for life in all its forms, including your own, so that its intrinsic intelligence stands revealed. Living with this awareness offers a direct experience of the wholeness and interconnectedness that has always been ours. In sacred being, actions flow from a natural confidence, wisdom and compassion, creating harmony in our selves, our lives and our world.

Bohdi Khaya has accommodations to suit every need. Around the central courtyard there are a range of rooms that are comfortable, modern and peaceful. For those who enjoy a touch of history, the original farmhouse, steeped in atmosphere and old-world charm, has beautiful rooms where you can curl up with a good book beside a cozy fire. And for those who prefer to do their own thing, the self-catering cottage is ideal.

The courtyard

The courtyard rooms are new, modern, and are conveniently situated close to both the meditation hall and the main dining room. Each room is a twin, with an en suite bathroom.

Also on the courtyard there is the garden room, a luxurious double room, with a king-size bed, a Victorian bath, and open plan bathroom. This beautifully restored building used to be the old dairy and has high ceilings with rustic wooden rafters and a working fireplace.

The cloister

Around a central courtyard, there are 14 beautiful single rooms. The first six rooms, in the front section of the cloister, share two showers and two toilets. Each room contains a bed, small cupboard space to hang clothes, and side table. These rooms lead into an open plan living space that looks out across the gardens and labyrinth. The eight rooms at the back have a bed, side table, cupboard, and a basin. These rooms share three showers and three toilets.

The farmhouse

This part of the center is a beautifully restored home dating back to the 1820s. The Cape Dutch style architecture with low ceilings and cozy fireplaces will transport you back to a time when people sat down together for meals and gathered around the fireplace to share their stories at night. There are a total of five totally distinct rooms available, one of which is a dorm with five beds.

You will arrive in the afternoon at Bodhi Khaya to enjoy a delicious raw food supper and a chance to meet the facilitators and other guests.

Day one begins with a yoga class to build awareness and sensitivity. Breath work and meditation is used to cultivate a true presence. Enjoy a herbal detoxifying foot bath with grounding roots and herbs in teas and juices, and feel the earth beneath your feet on a guided walk.

Day two marks the first day the juice cleanse. The yoga session opens up the large joints in the body, cleansing the lymphatic glands in the shoulders and hips. Enjoy soothing herbal teas for endocrine balance and then challenge your habitual responses to the unknown through movement and dance. Floral waters are provided for a high energy splash bath to release old trauma held in the body.

Day three brings you liver cleansing herbs and yogic practices to release toxins from the organs, stoke the digestive fire and assist with elimination. Through contemplation, you identify and transform limiting beliefs, and practice mindfulness meditation for inside freedom.

Day four invites you to peel away your habitual defensiveness and let life in. You move into three days of silence. Herbal medicine works on the circulatory system and thymus gland. Writing tasks, deep meditation, and time in nature connect you with the hearts wisdom and bring you beyond judgment and into forgiveness of self and others.

Day five is devoted to sound and vibration, and your ability to create and make things manifest in the world. You begin the first day of noble silence, and in the quiet that opens up, consider the inner critic and the ways in which you use language. Enjoy yogic chanting practices and other traditional forms of song.

Day six uses yogic balances and drishti to hone the concentration. You will cleanse the upper respiratory system and stimulate the pituitary and pineal glands with a herbal steam inhalation. Intuitive art engages your subconscious, conscious and superconscious mind in order to access your intuition and higher understanding.

Day seven takes the experience of yourself beyond the borders of the body. You will use vibrational medicine to energize and purify the energetic field, and practice meditation techniques that wake you up to oneness. You will also create through a collaborative intuitive art process.

On day eight you will practice extending the sensitivity developed to others, working with partner poses in the final yoga session. During the day you will embark on a vision quest, spending time alone in the beautiful wild spaces of Bodhi Khaya, or enjoy the company of others as you collectively prepare simple raw food meals and smoothies.

On the final day you will reflect on learning and letting go, and prepare to move back into your life. Strategies for carrying your teachings back into your life are given, as well as a system for the reintroduction of foods and daily activities with awareness. Then share a raw food feast before departing. A packed raw food meal will be provided for your journey home.

This retreat will take place at the Bohdi Khaya Retreat center located near the town of Stanford, in the Western Cape of South Africa. The center is situated on the Baviaans Fonteyn farm, the oldest one in the area.

The land has been divided, changed and re-shaped since then, but the present owner, Georgina Hamilton, has carefully created a sanctuary for those who wish to explore the thoroughfares of the heart and mind.

Today Bodhi Khaya is an open and welcoming spiritual home for all. The centers mission is to promote the conservation of the natural and cultural diversity of the Capes floral kingdom. The area is home to more types of indigenous plants than any similar sized area. Approximately 70% of its 9,000 plant species are found nowhere else on Earth.

Winding through 217 hectares of pristine fynbos and milkwood forests are six magical hiking trails. You can wander through an ancient forest and meditate under the old milkwood tree thats been around for decades. Or follow the farm loop trail along the top of the farm for spectacular views of the valley, and catch a glimpse of the ocean in the far distance. Discover meditation circles and ponds in secluded nooks in the forest; and gaze in wonder at the wild pincushions and proteas turning the hills orange in spring. Each trail has its own character, as it meanders through a different section of the farm.

  • Bodhi Khaya's labyrinth is exquisitely crafted in harmony with the floral ecosystem, and incorporates fynbos, aloes, and other indigenous plants within its rings.

Nearby towns

A short 15 minutes drive from Bodhi Khaya is the whale watching capital of the world that is Gansbaai, a traditional fishing village and bustling, vibrant centre for the surrounding farms. Both Stanford and Gansbaai offer visitors a long list of activities, from wine tasting, and other culinary delights, to quad biking, hiking, and even scenic flights.

Beside the meditation hall and labyrinth are two beautiful swimming dams. The first is a lily dam where you can bathe in the beauty of the lilies. The second dam is a tranquil and water hole that you may have to share with swallows at the end of a hot summer's day.

  • Review by Ned from Cape Town, South Africa

"I came with mostly a physical cleansing in mind, but as time went on the mental and spiritual aspects came to the forefront. In the space of 9 days, a lot of things have started to shift within old tightly held beliefs that I am starting to let go of. Different possibilities for the future have emerged and some old prejudices discarded. It was a beautiful experience being part of such a united and supportive group of people and I both was able to receive and give love. A memorable experience!"

  • Review by Nikki from London, United Kingdom

"Words cannot describe my deep gratitude to you for creating this powerful and transformative experience. This has been more than a retreat for me, like being in the school of life, connecting to myself, my heart, my soul, my body, my mind, to nature, and beautiful like-minded people. I have taken so much learning and discovery from this journey. For the first time in my life, this experience allowed me the space and time to connect to myself, immerse myself in nature and true, healthy, holistic lifestyle. I feel light, clean, filled with life, love, and deep gratitude.I came here already clear about my life purpose and this week has confirmed that I am on exactly the right path. For the first time ever I truly feel confident that I have the skills and ability to do what I need to fulfill my purpose. My level of self-care has developed immensely and I will be taking all of this with me."

  • Review by Max from Cape Town, South Africa

"On the physical level, I feel completely cleansed and inexpressibly lighter. Ive gone away with the firm intention to eat, drink and be merry in an entirely different way, a way which supports my health, my sense of harmony and balance and my spiritual practice. On an emotional level, there are old holding patterns which the silence has allowed me to look at and flag for further work.On an energetic level, I feel like I have stumbled across the secret garden, and now have a clear idea of what needs to be pruned, fed, cleared and allowed to flow. On a spiritual level I have been put in touch with countless beautiful ways to deepen my practice."

  • Review by Cormac from Cape Town, South Africa

"I feel like this experience has enabled me to discard my old habits and replace them with more balanced and consciously chosen patterns that will transform my life. I am left with the deep knowledge that I am not the person I am at work or in society, but really I am a wild creature of the Earth, engaged in a wonderful cosmic celebration. I am full of gratitude and love and feel tremendously healthy and clear-sighted."

  • Review by Francois from Cape Town, South Africa

"It exceeded all my expectations. The retreat was unbelievably beautiful and expertly facilitated. My favorite aspect of the retreat is how all the different elements came together with masterful, gentle orchestration. I use the words like life-changing very sparingly, but there is no way that this experience cant affect my journey from here."
