Nagawa Florence

Florence began her training as a Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) in 2001, with the NGO SOU in Nakeseke District. Her interest stemmed from childhood when she assisted her grandmother, who was also a TBA, in gathering herbs. She was never allowed in the room, but was always very curious about how the baby came out of the belly button as she had been told. When SOU came into her community asking for TBAs, she signed up for the training for she had already assisted in three deliveries. She remains to this day extremely proud of her certificate.

Nabimuli Ritah Musoke

Born into a family of environmentalists, Ritah has been an agriculturalist almost from birth. After completing secondary school, she followed in her father’s footsteps studying Forestry at St. Mugagga Farm School, and later earning herself a diploma from ViAgro Forestry. Ritah has always been eager to share her knowledge, this is particularly evident when she speaks about herbs and traditional remedies with such passion. She now works closely with Shanti Uganda as an agriculture adviser and provides sustainable gardening and nutrition workshops to Shanti beneficiaries.

Kyaterekera Josephine Kizito

Sister Josephine, midwife since 1980 after graduating from Nsambya Nursing and Midwifery School in Kampala. She has experience working in the private a public sectors, including 18 years at the district level as a Assistant Maternal Child Health officer where she trained and updated health workers on the newest best practices for maternal care. Passionate about reducing the rate of maternal and infant death in Uganda, which is why she came to Shanti Uganda as Head Midwife. She has raised eight children, many of whom have been inspired to pursue nursing and midwifery because of their mom.

Attending the 2018 Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training with Shanti Uganda was such an incredible and amazing experience for me. Supporting and learning about Shanit's maternal health programs, alongside the prenatal yoga curriculum make this program so so special. Shanti is a beautiful place, with such wonderful community, and I am SO grateful that this opportunity came to be. It's an experience I'll certainly never forget.

The meals and cultural sessions at the homes of local people offered an extraordinary glimpse of Ugandan village life that simply made the trip. Yoga or doula training can be done in many places but to experience it in a way that one truly grasps the extent of global inequality, the social determinants of health in action, the richness of Ugandan culture, and the resilience and warmth of its people was both humbling and priceless.

For me the most valuable aspect of my experience was being able to teach prenatal yoga to pregnant moms at the birth house. This was such a privilege to teach a class where every student was smiling the entire time. I can’t believe how ready I already feel to dive in and start teaching prenatal yoga. The training really teaches you more than you could imagine.

Studying at Shanti Uganda was an incredibly rewarding life experience and an invaluable training. Learning about prenatal yoga at a birthing center and seeing women laboring naturally and with support, was so encouraging, inspiring, and such a gift. Bobby Bessey, is a master instructor with years of extensive knowledge to pass on; she shares and leads with grace and dignity. Bobby and the other trainees from all over the world made the training made the trip so memorable. I am so grateful for this experience and will always carry it with me. Go to the training with an open heart and mind and you will leave with so much more than you ever expected! - Attended in 2016

Traveling with Shanti Uganda was a life affirming experience. The teacher training has brought me confidence in my learning abilities and skills. The people that I met - from fellow participants, to Shanti staff and volunteers, and locals - all of them have enriched my experience with their life stories. I now have friends in all corners of the world, from Uganda and Rwanda to United States, Australia and Singapore. Every day of my experience was a very genuine discovery of Africa and of myself that brought enhanced awareness of my own life.

Bobby is a fantastic teacher, with great talent in storytelling and knowledge sharing; the stories, experiences and knowledge we shared with all participants were extremely valuable.
