Situated just east of the Caribbean Sea, Barbados is an independent island nation in the western Atlantic Ocean. At roughly 13° North and 59° West, the country lies in the southern Caribbean region, where it is a part of the Lesser Antilles island-chain. Its closest island neighbors are St. Vincent and St. Lucia to the west, Grenada to the south-west, and Trinidad and Tobago to the south, with which Barbados now shares a fixed official maritime boundary.
Barbados' total land area is about 430 square kilometers, (166 square miles), and is primarily low-lying, with some higher regions in the island's interior. The organic composition of Barbados is thought to be of non-volcanic origin and is predominantly composed of limestone-coral. The island's climate is tropical, with constant trade winds off the Atlantic Ocean serving to keep temperatures mild.

"We love the Sandpiper having been there every year since 2000 bar one - that is for 16 times! The staff continue to be so very welcoming helpful and friendly that we always feel we are coming home. The recent refurbishments have made what is an amazingly friendly and comfortable holiday even better. (I would not have believed that this was possible!). The new lengths pool of 25 metres long has hugely improved the attractiveness of the rooms nearby and the sunbeds there are all now very popular - both the ones with feet in the water and those under shade umbrellas. The pool itself is just the right temperature and good to swim in. The extra space for sunbeds by the new pool means that there is no shortage of places to lie in and you can change places to beach or decking from the pool area during the day easily. The substantial expansion of Harold's bar area with good umbrellas which shelter well from both sun and rain makes it very much better. It now needs just a few more umbrellas because it has already become more popular and will become even more so as it becomes better known. We sat at a table next to Cliff Richard and his friends at lunch - so he now knows about it! There are now two or three tables where the water sports shed used to be which are also popular. However the Hobbiecat is now kept near the Settlers Beach next door which is not quite as accessible and I had to sail out near groins and a swimming area which is not quite so simple but OK. The beach area is larger and so sunbeds are more spaced out which is better. The new beach house is very well designed in a modern style and will particularly appeal to those who like an uncluttered and rather minimalist style. The top suite which we saw has amazing views over the coast - rather like being on a cruise liner's deck. The lower ground floor two suites are very nice but we thought they were a bit too close to the beach but some would like that. We thought that the food was better than in any previous year and I told Christophe the cook this. You might have realised that my wife Roe and I are great fans of the Hotel."
