The hostel just went through a complete renovation from top to bottom, so you'll find everything new, comfortable, modern, secure, and clean with comfy new beds, personal lockers, fully equipped guest’s kitchen, laundry facilities, luggage storage, a herb garden, and new super clean bathrooms.

The Salty Pelican has been converted into a stunning traveler's meeting point, featuring a cozy lounge, an awesome chill-out barbecue terrace, and peaceful gardens. So whether you’re up early to go check out the beach or stretch out those achy muscles with morning beach yoga, joining one of the SUP classes, or you’re just after a few lazy craft beers on the terrace before hitting the town, all your needs will be taken care of.

The accommodation includes a comfy bed in a spacious room with shared bathrooms and a delicious breakfast with fresh fruits, yogurt, juices, cereals, fresh bread, and lots more. Besides the awesome time you will have learning stand up paddle boarding, this hostel has all the comforts of a home.

The living room at the hostel has a TV, DVDs, free Wi-Fi, two computers, and of course, surf videos and surf music. If The Salty Pelicans all-day menu of delicious homemade barbecue pulled pork burgers, surprisingly good toasted bagels, and healthy salads doesn’t tempt you, they also have a big kitchen for you to cook up a storm in. To explore the town, you can rent bicycle and skateboard from the reception. The hostel also offers female-only accommodation in a four bed dormitory.

Stand up paddle boarding

Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is an amazing core work-out while you’re out in the sun enjoying the beautiful coastline of Cascais Bay straight from the water. Each SUP lesson lasts around one hour and the basics are super easy to pick up. The SUP school is run by qualified SUP instructors and all levels are welcome - including complete beginners. You will be having fun from the first lesson onwards.

After breakfast, you'll head out to the beach for your morning SUP lessons. The unique geography of the location means that you will not only have flat calm waters to paddle on, but also waves perfect to ride almost every day of the year.

Yoga

This eight-days SUP and yoga package offers an excellent detailed introduction to Yin and Yang yoga for beginners and the chance to dive deep into more advanced practice. The sessions are held in the morning or afternoon down by the beach or in the beautiful garden.

Sunrise Yang yoga

Experience revitalizing Yang yoga sequences at sun rise to give you all the energy and focus you need for the day. The mental benefits of yoga include an increased sense of focus and awareness to the human form and body. This practice is for all level yogis. You don’t need any earlier experience.

Afternoon Yin yoga

In the late afternoon, you will start your practice with Yin yoga. You will hold long, deep postures within a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Almost every posture is done at floor level and the stretches will be maintained for two to five minutes at a time. This will take you deeply into your connective tissue expanding flexibility and aiding healing energy to your bodies. This practice is for everyone and it's a beautiful way to start your yoga journey.

  • Ida

Ida, the in-house yogi goddess from Finland, will help develop muscular strength, stamina, flexibility, balance, and breathing. Ida will bring balance to your body and mind during your morning practice by the sea, so that you build your bodies to be light and strong for the day. She teaches both Ying and Yang yoga along with meditation sessions.

The Salty Pelican hostel sits snuggled between the sun-dappled shores of the Cascais Bay and the Sintra's dramatic mountain range. Cascais is renowned for its glorious stretch of white sandy beaches which are simply stunning, beautiful palaces, cosmopolitan vibrancy, and as Lisbon’s most sophisticated beach destination. With over 300 days of sun per year, you will spend most of your time outdoors, even during winter.

The whole coastline offers a seemingly endless amount of dramatic and ever-changing scenery, culminating in the extraordinary town of Sintra, the end-of-summer getaway for royals over 100 years ago and now an official World Heritage site. Truly one of the most unusual and magical places to experience in Europe, the centerpieces are undoubtedly the Pena palace and park, which many say was the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle in Disney’s “Magic Kingdom”, the mystical and symbolic Quinta da Regaleira palace with its tunnels, magical grottos, fountains, and gothic architecture, and right at Sintra’s highest point, the Moorish castle offering outstanding views across the mountains and down to the Atlantic.

Marvel at the unspoiled sand dunes and untamed waves at Guincho Beach - part of the beautiful Sintra Cascais National Park - with its high waves that attract surfers and kite surfers from all over the world as having some of the best waves in Europe. Exploring Cascais is a voyage of discovery. On the one hand, there is the original historic area that has a distinct nautical air about it - with its cobbled winding streets leading down to the cozy harbor where the day’s fresh catch is still sold by local fishermen in the nearby square.

Don’t miss the Seixas palace, a magnificent 19th century palace overlooking the sea, or the municipal museum so close to the sea that waves often reach the steps at high tide. Have a light lunch at the restaurant and café in the charming Santa Marta lighthouse museum and check out the Atlantic views.

You can take a stroll on the seaside promenade and discover many beachfront cafés where you can absorb the clean swathes of golden sand with the wide stretch of the Atlantic sweeping around the bay to Cascais. Sitting there, sipping on a galao, Portugal’s version of a café latte, you can limit yourself to thinking nothing but good thoughts.

Nearby the hostel, you have Praia do Tamariz, with its salt-water swimming pool. Cascais is also a magnet for night owls, providing an eclectic range of evening entertainment that offers everything from pubs, cafes, restaurants, glitzy cocktail lounges, to cozy craft beer bars and late night clubbing. After tearing up the sea, grab a beer from the bar, grill up some grub at the hostel barbecue area, or lay back and chill-out in one of the hammocks in the beautiful garden with some mighty good tunes.

Biking and mountain biking

Cascais has an amazing coastline and its an easy fun way to explore by bike, with self-guided trips or organized trips for all levels of ability. You can ride through the amazing scenery of Sintra National Park with its spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean and dense forests.

Visit archaeological sites, fantastic beaches, and unspoiled villages as you pedal along some of the nicest routes in Europe. The more adventurous choose to ride a mountain bike downhill from the top of Sintra National Park all the way down to The Atlantic and finish with a wine and sunset right on the beach.

Hidden beach of Praia da Ursa

This is an incredible "secret" beach which you can take a beautiful hike down to catch an aiming sunset in Sintra National Park.

Quinta da Regaleira

Imagine a place with secret passages, stepping stones, hidden caves and grottos, a library that looks like you're floating in air, beautiful chapel and residence - all while being located in one of the most beautiful parks. That would be Quinta da Regaleira, an architectural marvel built at the direction of Portugal's first millionaire and to his exacting specifications.

Its really one of the most magical and enchanting places you can visit whilst you're in Cascais. The bus right near The Salty Pelican takes you there in just a 25 minute bus ride.

Visiting Lisbon and Belem

Lisbon city centre is just an easy 25 minute ( 2.50 EUR ) train ride away from The Salty Pelican. Its a great day trip to add to your week here and you can hop off the train at Belem halfway and try one of the Portugal's most famous pastel de Belem, a traditional Portuguese custard tart, a treat not to be missed. Belem is also full of sights and scenery to check-out before heading into Lisbon. It's a great little pit-stop.

"I made the challenging decision to travel by myself recently. When I saw the offer of a one week package of 'Surf & Yoga' I got excited and knew it was exactly what I needed! So before I could change my mind, I booked the hostel and plane tickets. At the same time I had some doubts as I have never surfed and never stayed at a hostel before. But when I first stepped out on Monte Estoril station and took a breath of salty ocean breeze I knew I made the right choice! At Salty Pelican I was warmly welcomed by Tiago who showed me around and suggested to join the evening BBQ that takes place in a cosy inner patio. Food and sangria was a great combination for connecting with people and that night I met a super crew of girls, who became more than just friends."

"We had yoga classes twice a day; strengthening in the morning and relaxing in the evening. Ida, the yoga teacher, is a true angel. Beautiful from the inside and outside! She adds the essential spiritual part to her class making it more than just body gymnastics. The surf trainers are so much fun and they make sure you enjoy every wave even if you don't succeed in standing up on the board (the way I did for the first three days but it didn't stop me from laughing all the time). The whole Salty Pelican family is so amazing! They make sure you feel at home and a big smile never leaves your face! Gareth, Monica and Tiago - this one is for you!"

"I stayed at the Cod Father room, on the upper bed, which didn't cause any inconvenience, even after Portugal wine. The bed is terribly comfortable! One tip - take the ear plugs (I didn't have them, but I'm not easily bothered when I want to sleep). There are 6 showers, and the two on the upper floor have a picturesque view also."

"I'm so happy and grateful for this experience! One of my best vacations! This place has some unique spirit definitely for its attraction and concentration of so many marvelous people!"

"Thank you for you support! Namaste! <3"

"My time there was so amazing, relaxing, breathtaking and emotional, that I found a place to rest my soul. This is a place which is run by magnificent owners Thiago, Garreth, Monika. The owners have an in-house yogi goddess, Ida (namaste from the bottom of my soul), and many volunteers and other helpers who all make the place the best hostel I ever stayed in. Go there for as long as you can, make sure to do the yoga and other social activities, and feel how your soul is much lighter when you leave. Question is not if I'll be back, but when and how often."

"I had a really wonderful week and would have liked to have stayed longer. The hostel is newly renovated, lovingly decorated and very clean. The crew is friendly, helpful and strives to ensure guests a great holiday. The generally very familiar atmosphere completes the comfort factor as of yet. Since I teach yoga, I was particularly interested in the courses there, and completely blown away by Ida that "Own", yoga teacher from Finland, which has its hours incredibly lovingly, individually and creatively designed and inspired me a lot. Depending on wind and weather the courses are held on the beach or in the garden; morning rather powerfully dynamic and afternoon very meditative and relaxed. "

"Cascais is also a nice, cozy town with beautiful beaches and great restaurants - for vegetarians (here especially recommended: House of Wonders)."

"The Salty Pelican is an amazing hostel. It was my first time in a hostel. The Salty Pelican staff took my fear and changed it into beautiful moments. Thank you for this. Everything was great - the room, bathrooms, staff, yoga, and surfing. I am already planning when I can come back to visit them."

"I had no idea when I booked this stay that I would have such an amazing time. Being in my late 40s, I thought I'd do yoga in the morning, surf, yoga, and then sleep. How wrong could I be! I made new friends and laughed so much. The rooms were colourful, clean, and tidy. The food is delicious - especially during clam night. The staff are wonderful. They go to lengths to make sure you feel at home and organize activities for you. Ida, the yoga teacher, is brilliant. Her sessions are well thought out easy to follow. I learnt so much about yoga from Ida. I would not hesitate to go back to this special hostel."

"Gorgeous hostel -small and friendly. I booked for a yoga and SUP package and it was amazing value. I went to the two yoga sessions a day with lovey teacher Ida. Dynamic yoga on beach in morning and stretching yin yoga at end of day in hostel garden, I walked down to Cascais to do daily Sup lessons in harbour with Tina - it was my first time paddle boarding and I loved every minute. Hostel has all new extremely comfy beds, AMAZING showers, lovely breakfast and garden to chill. Tiago, Monika and Gareth are friendly and welcoming and determined you will have a good time and feel at home. Well designed kitchen and communal eating space and people cooked and ate together.Hostel barbecue is great value too and a chance to socialise. Really hard to find any downsides except Cascais can be a bit windy - (which is why the surf is good) - so take a warmer top for evenings. Ten minute walk from Monte Estoril station, fifteen minutes from centre of Cascais for shopping. Book it!"

"I had a fantastic stay at The Salty Pelican! The staff is friendly and knowledgable. The hostel itself is new and very clean. There are activities for people at the hostel to participate in together if they choose. I did surfing and yoga all week along with the BBQs and loved it all. It really was a social hostel where you could enjoy what the area has to offer with others or do your own thing. I highly recommend it! "

"Stayed at The Salty Pelican for 3 nights, 5 guys aged 18 and 19 in a 6 bed dorm room. Facilities were great with a well equipped kitchen and spacious bathrooms including a massive shower on the top floor. You could stretch your arms out and not touch the walls of the shower!Breakfast served until 10:30 AM with a good selection selection of cereal, toast, yoghurt and fruit. Beds were comfy if a little difficult to get up to the top bunk for a tall guy and storage space under beds was useful as a safe (if you bring a padlock). Nice lounge area with board games, jenga, etc. plus beautiful outdoor seating area and grass area for yoga. Did not use the surfing part of the hostel - bus to beach and lessons- as instead went to Cascais beach every day which was large enough and had good places for drinks in the sun. Beware that beach football and bat & ball are illegal on the beach! Best part about the hostel was the Sunday evening BBQ for 12 euro which comprised of plenty of barbecued chicken drumsticks plus a perfectly cooked sole, potatoes, salad and beer or sangria. Great value! Make sure you know where you are going as directions from Estoril to the hostel are required, 3-4 minutes uphill. Cascais town has plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy and we particularly liked John Bull bar for cheap drinks and to watch the European Championship and also Bordallos burger restaurant which was great value and tasted awesome. Also pedalos are good value on the beach."

"Great hostel located in Cascais just outside of Lisbon. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful and will go the extra length to ensure your stay is enjoyable. The hostel itself is great, a traditional Portuguese building, light and airy with plenty of communal space, and the showers in particular are fantastic. After returning home I realised I had left a mobile phone at the hostel, I contacted them and they happily posted the phone to my home address. Highly recommended."

"My friend and I came to The Salty Pelican for a yoga and surf retreat. It was our first time surfing. I loved doing yoga everyday especially beach yoga on the pier where the views were breathtaking. The rooms were clean and funky, the staff were like old friends, and the barbecue nights are a great way to socialise with the rest of the guests. The actual house is beautiful, and Cascais is absolutely lovely. Great stay, fantastic all around. We didn't want to leave. Definitely would love to come back again!"

"I booked a surf + yoga retreat with The Salty Pelican and man was it the best week ever! Gareth, Monica and Tiago are amazing night hosts. They are all truly interested, helpful and accommodating. The breakfast each morning was delicious, the yoga was amazing and very professional, the surf lessons was so much fun (we were all total beginners!). The hostel itself is a beautiful, old house but renovated. Big rooms, big bathrooms and very clean! The common area was also great, with a well equipped kitchen. The barbecue nights on Thursday and Sunday were my favorite. We had fresh fish and sangria. Just to note, it's a bit of an uphill walk to get there but it's very close to the train station. Cascais beaches are stunning, and the town is beautiful. A very chilled area, not much night life. I recommend this hostel to anyone (old and young!). P.S. The place looks exactly as the photos."

"I spent 3 nights at the Salty Pelican and had an awesome experience! The hostel is in a beautifully restored classic Portuguese home and has modern decor, large light rooms and is very clean. There was a BBQ on Thurs night on the patio which all the guest went to and it was cool to meet everyone. Cascais is a really pretty town and there's plenty of stuff to do/see nearby. The hostel also organised yoga and surf lessons which were awesome, and gave recommendations for day trips/restaurants. Thanks for the best hostel experience, I'll be visiting again very soon!"

"We spend two nights in The Salty Pelican and it's literally the best hostel we've ever stayed in! Sounds a bit over the top but we can't say it in any other way. First of all the hostel itself is a beautifully renovated house which is decorated welcoming and trendy at the same time. Rooms are simple but stylish and the beds are really comfortable. You're going to love the relaxed outdoor area and bathrooms which definitely have hotel standard - bathtub and hugh showers included. Next up is the awesome service which offers you everything from a huge variety of drinks, an all-you-can-eat barbecue once a week, a great free breakfast to lots of activities like yoga and surf lessons. We've tried surfing ourselves and we can just recommend trying it too it's totally suitable for beginners as we are beginners ourselves, the instructors are great and it's just lots fun over all. Last but definitely not least we have to talk about the hosts themselves. Monica, Gareth and Tiago are amazing people and extremely thoughtful and kind hosts which are always concerned about your personal well-being. You just feel like living in a shared flat instead of a hostel if you're willing to connect with them and the other guests which for us is the most important quality of a hostel. So if you are up for a home away from home, lovely new people which might even get friends in the end and a more than enjoyable location the Salty Pelican is the place to choose! If there would be a chance of just moving into this hostel forever we would definitely do so! ;) Thank you for the amazing time and keep on doing what you're doing!"
