"I think The Ranch at Live Oak needs to improve its website and photos because the ones available online do not show what a great break The Ranch at Live Oak Malibu is for guests seeking a health and fitness retreat. I lost a lot of weight in under 7 days and had one of the greatest times of my life. There needs to be a PR correction of sorts because The Wall Street Journal falsely described it as a "starvation vacation." That is false promo. The Ranch is all about correcting unnecessary cravings by giving you the right nutrients via its raw vegan offerings. They have the best chef ever. Not once did I feel hungry or deprived even during those daily 4 hour hikes. So on top of the high impact training, The Ranch must strive to educate the public to entice them to try out their program. For sure, no one will starve so someone has to correct that myth.I have been to other health and wellness resorts (Chivasom, The Farm at San Benito) but all fail in comparison to how magnificent my stay at The Ranch was. It was truly life changing.Just a few minor improvements: the hiking guides should give earthquake drills like what to do if you are right smack on the cliffs and there are huge rocks and giant boulders everywhere? I asked them this question and they seem unprepared to reply. Hello, this is CALIFORNIA and anything can happen.Second, it gets so dark at night. I think more lights are needed and not just a small flash light.Third, there was no ground map. I think it is imperative that a map of the resort grounds be made available in the rooms. I did not even know how to go to the romper room so I was unable to join some of the afternoon classes. It would be easier to have something like a guide book for guests.Fourth, they should extend the massage to a full 60 minutes instead of just 45. The best therapist was Clarissa who is a native of Germany. She was my favorite because she cured my jetlag.Props to Chef Nina, guide hikes Lisa, Mel, Justin, etc. The staff and team were truly excellent especially when helping guests on the unavoidable blisters. I tell you, no hiking shoe out there will protect your feet when you are training nonstop for 4 hours!Special thanks to Chef Nina because for several days I would skip dinner and she would make a special smoothie for me before bed time! Appreciate the kindness.Thank you and see you again soon as I am booking a return this spring 2016. Regards to the lovely owners Alex & Sue G as well as GM Scully. I hope to help you spread the right message to as many people as possible and get them hooked to your program as much as I do."

"The Ranch has a lot to offer: gorgeous grounds, staff that are very helpful and friendly, a daily schedule that works seamlessly, and beautiful hikes that challenge you but are very doable for people at every fitness level. The kitchen staff, specifically Nina, are excellent--the food is delicious and Nina has an incredible wealth of information about nutrition. The Ranch does need to work on some things. This place is not environmentally friendly--they use electric heaters, at times overnight. And despite the severe California water shortage, towels are changed daily. And while the staff that was there was accommodating and extremely helpful, there seems to be a high turnover rate because almost everyone there was new. In general, the place feels understaffed. And if you are looking for a spiritual experience, look elsewhere: everything here is focused on one's body...and merchandising the Ranch. "

"I've grown in so many areas in the past ten years but did not feel my body reflected my soul. I needed a breakthrough! The Ranch exceeded ALL my expectations. It did exactly what I wanted. They pushed my limits in a beautifully nurturing way. I learned so much and leave feeling aligned, supported, loved and with a new sense of purpose. Alex, Sue and the great staff have created something very special."

"I have always wanted to experience this type of program, but had no idea the feelings and emotions attached to the results. I feel I now have a clear and confident perspective on what it really takes to be happy and centered. Its an amazing feeling to feel what I was created to feel, not weighed down both physically and mentally. A fresh start to the second half of my life. Thank you!"

It was the hardest physical thing I have ever done and many times I thought I wouldn't make it. I feel so good about my accomplishments this week, and just feel good in general. I cant wait to come back in April."

"It's not just about the week one spends at the Ranch, it's the effect it has when you leave. I have continued to lose weight WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING AT ALL. It is almost as though it has changed my set-point. It's like it resets your metabolism. I was so sure, having hit 50, that those few extra pounds were something I had to accept. Not so, not so at all. The joy at not feeling lumpy over Christmas is a priceless one. Thank you again, guys."

"My second visit to the Ranch was equally challenging and even more fulfilling. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and had fun with my friends. I am thrilled to report that my rheumatoid arthritis is still gone thanks to my first visit to the Ranch. Can't wait to go buy smaller clothes. "

"The Ranch not only helped me lose weight and lowered my blood pressure, but centered me in the knowledge that I AM THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE for my body and mind. Lovingly calibrated hikes, yoga, exercise, and food were constant reminders of what we all know but in our busy world can scarcely manage: LIFE IS GOOD. The Ranch captures the spirit of healthy living which lasts far longer than the time you are there."
